William Jones Building
summer modeNatural Ventilation
• cooler air in -reduces temperature & lowers CO2 level
• low level manual opening windows(operated by staff & pupils when fresh air is required)
• high level automated opening windows (operated by staff when additional fresh air required)
![Page 4: William Jones Building –Environmental Management · William Jones Building. winter mode. full mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) • Windows ideally remain closed](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022060423/5f195ace7cec5e15c8445375/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
William Jones Building
summer modeNatural Ventilation
• stack effect ventilation (chimney principal) (high & low level ventilation using the differential pressure)
• warm & stale (CO2 laden) air is drawn out of the rooms into the voids via acoustically attenuated ventilation ducts
![Page 5: William Jones Building –Environmental Management · William Jones Building. winter mode. full mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) • Windows ideally remain closed](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022060423/5f195ace7cec5e15c8445375/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
William Jones Building
summer modeNatural Ventilation
• warm, stale air is drawn out via the modulated ceiling voids to the high level vents, either;
• glass louvres to the light wells, or
• ventilation turrets for level four rooms
![Page 6: William Jones Building –Environmental Management · William Jones Building. winter mode. full mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) • Windows ideally remain closed](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022060423/5f195ace7cec5e15c8445375/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
William Jones Building
winter modefull mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR)
• Windows ideally remain closed to gain full energy efficiency
• stale air is extracted via the ceiling and ducts via the void and drawn through the ends of the lightwell at high level to the MVHR unit
• the MVHR unit extracts heat from stale air, transfers that heat to fresh intake air, and redistributes as tempered fresh air to the building
![Page 7: William Jones Building –Environmental Management · William Jones Building. winter mode. full mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) • Windows ideally remain closed](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022060423/5f195ace7cec5e15c8445375/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
William Jones Building
winter modefull mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR)
• ‘tempered’ fresh air is re-circulated via MHVR unit and ducts to each room on the window facade side of the building
![Page 8: William Jones Building –Environmental Management · William Jones Building. winter mode. full mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) • Windows ideally remain closed](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022060423/5f195ace7cec5e15c8445375/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Two Basic Operating Modes
Summer Winter
• Natural ventilation using open able windows & light wells/roof ventilators• Automatic ground floor mechanical supply all year based on presence detection (9am – 5pm)• User over‐ride controls bring on mechanical supply ventilation on a floor by floor basis for a set duration• Mechanical supply ventilation automatically brought on, on a floor by floor basis if one classroom exceeds 28oC
(external temp > 17oC) (external temp < 17oC)
• Automatic mechanical supply & extract to every floor based on presence detection (9am – 5pm)• Heat recovery from extract air, through air handling unit• Windows can be opened if desired • User over‐ride controls bring on mechanical supply & extract ventilation on a floor by floor basis, out of hours, for a set duration• Dampers to roof turrets/louvers shut

User Over‐ride (Summer Mode & Winter Mode Out of Hours)
User over‐ride switches in corridor of each floor bring on the mechanical ventilation to the entire floor for a pre‐set length of time.
