The Casper Zone Meet was a great success. As you all know, it takes a lot of planning and work to put

together a Zone Meet. The Wyoming Chapter is a small group, with most members spread out across

the state which makes it hard to get people together to plan such an event. The Wyoming Chapter had

everything well planned and a great time was enjoyed by all. Chapter President, Bruce Berst, and Sec-

retary, Tammy Raver, were in charge of organizing this event. As members of the Wyoming Chapter,

we attended many meetings over the last year where the meet was discussed. We witnessed the drive

and determination that Bruce and Tammy put into this event to make it the best time possible. Of

course, they did not do all of this themselves. With the help of Jim & Carol Harkins, Jim & Leslea Rapp,

and other Wyoming members, the pieces fell into place. The Dakota Chapter members also stepped

up to help out. There were over 55 cars on display which was more than anticipated. It was a great

weekend and I’m looking forward to the next Zone Meet in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada!

See you on the road,

end. I would also like to Thank all those that helped in anyway and a SPECIAL THANKS to our South Da-

kota Chapter friends, Tom Cantrell, Brad & Kim Canfield, Grant & Mary Coffin. These people took care of

the handing out and counting of all the voting ballots. I also would like to welcome new members John

& Ingvar Baker, Marvin Harvey, Craig Hess & Janice Morgan, Hugo Lenz, John Mayer, and Don Stevens.

The Wyoming Chapter's next meeting will be at the Dakota's Chapter show in Custer, SD over the Labor

2030.5 miles from Fort Collins was the 52nd Studebaker International Meet in Warwick Rhode Island.

For us that was two nights and three days on the road. Our Suburban decided not to go (that’s anoth-

er story) so our son Terry took his 2015 GMC Denali truck pulling the 20’ car trailer with the 1905 Doc-

tors Buggy inside.

Because of the distance, the meet was smaller than most of the International meets but there

was a great representation of Studebaker vehicles through the years. Our Buggy was the oldest but

there was also a goat wagon in our class. Some of the special cars displayed were a 1915 Fire Truck, a

1916 Bus, a Gravely Garden Tractor, a 1955 Chip Foose Custom coupe with a super charged Hemi to

move it along, and a one off, two seat convertible replica of a Bob Bourke design.

Attending the meet from the Conestoga Chapter were Lynn and Sharron Metz, Catherine and

Ray Petros, Glenn, Barbara and Terry Shull, and guests my sister Cathy and brother-in-law Skip. There

were representatives of the Chapter in Grand Junction and certainly others from the North Central

Zone including national board member Frank van Doorn and his wife. We were the only members

from the Conestoga Chapter having a vehicle. Barbara’s buggy received a perfect score and I received

a plaque for my “contributions in related areas of Studebaker” (Directing the Band). Our “Western

Outlook” editor, Rick Hawkins received an appreciation plaque for his efforts as newsletter editor.

The band was small but it was well received. We had 13 members in which 5 were my family

members. One of the band members explained that we were small because the State of Rhode Island

is small. We made it work by playing Dixieland and German Band music. We brought our keyboard

for Barbara to play, I with the Trombone, Terry playing in the drum section, Cathy – Clarinet and Skip –

Trumpet.

For the outdoor concert, there wasn’t and power for the keyboard and amp so Terry came to the res-

cue using the power inverter in his truck. This saved having to rent a generator.

The trip home was uneventful except we missed a turn and ended up pulling a 20’ trailer

through Bronx, New York and across the George Washington Bridge. We also didn’t make a turn in

Pennsylvania and almost went into Maryland. We did, however, see some beautiful country and a

couple of quaint towns working our way back to our designated route. We also visited 13 states and

saw 49 out of 50 state license plates. In addition we saw District of Columbia and about 5 Canadian

provinces plates

CONESTOGA CHAPTER PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I have been remiss by not mentioning that one of the most important items of business at our recent

Chapter meetings has been our plan to purchase memorial bricks at the National Studebaker Museum in

South Bend, Indiana in memory of Jim and Shirley Zaner, and Bill and Gertie Davis. Though not complete-

ly finalized, the Conestoga Chapter has raised funds and will purchase a memorial brick at the Museum

in memory of Bill and Gertie Davis. Because Jim and Shirley Zaner were members of both the Pikes Peak

and Conestoga Chapters, each chapter will contribute half for the Zaner’s memorial brick. Each brick will

be 8” square and will contain their names, and Chapter(s). We are very pleased to honor these very spe-

cial members in such a meaningful manner.

It’s been a very hot summer so far and the July events were even hotter! Unfortunately Jay and I were

unable to attend the Eaton Days car show on July 9th, but Conestoga members who did attend say it was

a whole lot of fun with more cars than expected. The City of Eaton is very welcoming of all the cars and

club members – those of us who were unable to attend can start planning to attend next year.

Well, we just had a fine time at the Zone Meet in Casper July 14-17th. Please see Jay’s Tourmaster arti-

cle elsewhere in this newsletter for more details about this fun trip. I want to take the opportunity to

thank The Wyoming Chapter, and especially Tammy and Bruce for all their hard work in facilitating the

Zone Meet. Great food, great drives, special surprises, great entertainment, and a fantastic car show

were enjoyed by all! It was evident that Tammy and Bruce and the Chapter members worked long hours

to make this extraordinary event possible.

It’s only August, so look for more hot days, but a great chance to cool down and enjoy a great meal Sun-

day, August 21st –when Jim and Trish Harness host a home-style BBQ at their home in Littleton. Please

see the article elsewhere in this newsletter for all the details!

Saturday, September 10th is International Drive Your Studebaker Day. Thanks to Chuck Donkle and the

Pikes Peak Chapter, we have been afforded the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic day! We plan to meet at

the Hotel Elegante in Colorado Springs starting at 9:00 am for donuts and coffee. We will depart the Ho-

tel at 10:00 am to enjoy a tour of the Penrose Museum, and then on to Johnny Martin’s Car Central (a

private club) in downtown Colorado Springs for lunch. I know it seems like a bit of a drive to Colorado

Springs, but: (1) it IS International Drive Your Studebaker Day, and (2) there may not be another oppor-

tunity to have lunch and spend an afternoon at Johnny Martin’s Car Central. Please see the article else-

where in this newsletter for more information.

Sunday, October 23rd – Imagine yourself transported back one-hundred seventy years in time! Tourmas-

ter Jay Hokanson will take us Northeast to enjoy a leisurely tour of Historic Fort Lupton and South Platte

Valley Settlement Historic Park. The area is encompassed by 97 acres of land along the South Platte River

just northwest of the city of Fort Lupton. We will visit the 1875 Independence School, the 1860's Donel-

son House, and the reconstructed Fort Lupton (Originally Fort Lancaster), as well as the re-constructed

fur trading post. We do plan to have lunch along the way. Watch future issues of The Western Outlook

for more information.

Gosh – after October, it seems like we move into the Holiday months. Our Thanksgiving Potluck will be

held Sunday November 13th at the Forney; Our Holiday Dinner will be held Sunday, December 18th at

Cinzetti’s. Tourmaster Jay and I are working on some ideas for events for 2017. We would love hearing

from you if you have any ideas for events you think members would enjoy. Just let us know. Contact Jay

Conestoga Chapter Tour Master’s Report

Sixteen members of the Conestoga Chapter traveled to Casper, Wyoming for the 2016 North Central

Zone Meet hosted by the Wyoming Chapter of the Studebaker’s Drivers Club. We enjoyed a scenic tour

though the Casper area with stops at Fort Caspar and the Historic Trails Museum where we were able to

look over a Studebaker Covered Wagon and other historical displays. The highlight of our museum tour

was our opportunity to enjoy the musings of the world famous medical spokesman, Dr. Dumass (in case

you were wondering, that is pronounced “doom-ahss”, Dr. Dumass (who looked a LOT like Wyoming

Prez Bruce Berst) peddled products that he guaranteed would cure everything from hair-loss to the va-

pors, and everything in between. At the museum we enjoyed some really great food and the chance to

visit with fellow SDC members.

There was a wonderful assortment of Studebakers on display at the Zone Meet car show. The people’s

Choice award went to Conestoga members, Will and Lori Sander for their 1941 President which they

drove to the Zone Meet from Colorado. Conestoga members Deborah Hokanson and Trish Price took

first and second place respectively in the valve cover races, ladies division. We concluded the Zone Meet

with a delicious banquet dinner, awards presentation, a raffle and auction of assorted items.

Coming events for the Chapter include a BBQ on August 21st and a joint Drive Your Studebaker Day with

the Pikes Peak Chapter on September 10th. See the articles in this issue of the Western Outlook for

more information on these events.

services or memorials. John will be missed. He was an active member.

After the meeting, we had a short memorial for Earl's wife, Doreen. Trees had been planted in

her honor in their yard.

It was a fun day for all who attended. Before I close, I would like to say of word of thanks to

the Wyoming Chapter for a fun-filled zone meet in Casper. It was a great three days, touring the

city, and sitting on the lawn, surrounded by over 70 Studebakers and the admiring city crowd.

Thank you again to all who put much work and effort into the event.

John Padilla 1935-2016

John Padilla Studebaker Drivers Club Member and retired mechanic. In 2002 John was diagnosed with lung cancer and told

he had less than six months to live, and nothing known to medicine had a high probability of helping him. Instead of ac-

cepting the doctors' diagnosis, John chose to fight and underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. After sur-

viving all those treatments, John was told he probably would not last another year. With that in mind, John left his home in

Lakewood for a weekend trip, without saying anything, he returned home with a 1956 Studebaker President from the west-

ern slope of Colorado. It was rough and the family thought the cancer had gone to his brain. The Studebaker was NOT a

pretty sight.

In spite of all of that, John enlisted the aid of his stepson Bob Hoover and tore into the res-

toration. Bob was a classic 60's muscle car guy and had limited knowledge of the Studebaker

brand but could not resist working with his dad on the restoration. Except for machine work

on the engine block, John and Bob performed 100% of the restoration work themselves.

During the following winter they worked nearly every day on the President. Small-

er components could be worked on inside John's garage containing his tools and a work

bench but the garage was not large enough to accommodate a car, so most of the work was

performed outdoors. The President's engine, transmission, rear end, brakes, steering gear, power steering assist and any-

thing that could be removed were all rebuilt. The interior was re-upholstered, the radio was rebuilt and the dial reprint-

ed. NOS parts were acquired where possible and on September 4th of 2004 the car was transformed into a very respectable

and shining example of willpower. John had joined the Studebaker Drivers club in 2003, and mere days after finishing the

President, he entered his first car show at the 2004 Studebaker "Meet at the Pass" in Raton New Mexico. His family made a

vacation trip out of it and he won first in class his first time out. John's health had improved and for the moment the cancer

was in remission. John continued to work on his car and improve things adding air conditioning, replacing more parts with

NOS items, converting to new rims and radial tires all to make the car safer and more fun to drive. John enjoyed driving the

car often and joined both the Conestoga and Pikes Peak chapters of the Studebakers Drivers Club. The next year Bob re-

stored a 1955 Schwinn Black Phantom balloon tire bicycle, except he badged it with President and Studebaker Script to

match his dad's car. The next year at the 2005 Studebaker " Return to the Pass" car show Bob told a few people that the

bike, which matched the 56 Studebaker, was a Dealer giveaway and came with the car when it was new. It was a tall tale

that followed John for years to come as he was asked time and again if he still had that "dealer bike" anymore.

Page 14: Will & Lori Sander 1941 President - WordPress.com · 2009-08-12 · from the onestoga hapter having a vehicle. arbara’s buggy received a perfect score and I received a plaque for

During this time and for several years to come two of John's grand-

daughters, Rebecca and Anna Hoover, would go with their Grand-

pa to car shows dressed in 1950's poodle skirts and spend special

time with their Pa Pa John and his magical black and white Stu-

debaker. Time passed and the cancer came back and John went

through another round of chemo, radiation and microwave obla-

tion to fight the lung cancer. Again the doctors gave him bad news

and a short life expectancy, so in keeping with his past history he

asked Bob to go on a road trip to eastern Kansas to pick up anoth-

er Studebaker. This time it was a 1957 Transtar Deluxe pickup

John and Bob traveled the state finding bits and pieces to restore the new Transtar even though John was sick from the radia-

tion and chemotherapy. Once again, working outdoors, the truck was disassembled just like the President. Repeating

the process John and Bob rebuilt the engine, transmission, rear axel, suspension, steering, brakes and any part that could be

unbolted. The interior was restored and the truck painted white over blue. (After a family vote, as the original green and blue

was less than pleasing to most of the family.) With time not on his side John converted the brakes to accept modern Chevro-

let brake drums, changed the rims and added radial tires, added one of the very first A/C units made by Vintage Air, convert-

ed to a power steering gear and added a floor shifted 3 speed with over drive. Bob came up with the idea to cut the top off a

fiberglass camper shell he found for free on craigslist, and John made a frame and hinge assembly from metal scraps laying

around. After some fiberglass work and paint the Transtar had a fiberglass bed cover that looked like it belonged on the truck

from the factory. The truck was a blast to drive with all its new additions, and became a favorite at car shows including a sec-

ond place at the Abby car show in Canon City where Studebakers rarely get much notice on the awards podium. One of Johns

desires was to attend an international Studebaker meet which he did when the Pikes peak Chapter hosted the international in

Colorado Springs. John continued attending Studebaker and orphan car shows over the years with the cancer going in and out

of remission until John's granddaughters (The ones in poodle skirts) wanted something to drive to College so John and Bob

took on John's last restoration. This time it was not a Studebaker. It was a 1961 Ford F250, 292 V-8 unibody custom cab truck

Bob's birth father had purchased from Golden Motors Ford, and it had been in his family all this time. When finished it was

displayed at the Forney Museum of Transportation in Denver Colorado where John's Studebakers had also been displayed in

the past. The Ford was also invited to be in the CSU homecoming parade in Ft. Collins a few cars behind Amy Van Dyken with

Anna and Rebecca, Johns not so little granddaughters, driving it in the parade. In the end John had fought cancer, restored

three cars (two Studebakers and one Ford) attended over 70 car shows and exhibits and instilled Studebakers and a fighting

spirit into two more generations of his family. John was still working on upgrading the quality of his cars by sending out the

chrome bumpers on his 56 President as well as some chrome on his 57 Transtar up until June 2016 when his cancer made it

impossible for him to work on his beloved cars anymore. Over the years John helped a lot of fellow Studebaker members with

his vast knowledge of cars. John was always willing to help anyone who asked right up till the end. On July 20th 2016, after

fighting cancer for thirteen years, John Padilla passed away at home surrounded by his family. John always made it clear that

it was the memories and the friends he made along the way that made his Studebakers so special. Calling on fellow club

members for leads on elusive parts, making a vacation out of a cross-country trip to find that needed accessory or bracket,

and meeting so many good people along the way. It was not so much the cars he loved but rather the journey they took us all

on that he cherished. John wanted to say Thank You to all the people who helped him with parts for his cars and all the peo-

ple he met at the various car shows and club meetings over the years for being part of his life.

He will be missed by all he touched. RIP John Padilla
