DIVISION OF WILDLIFE

This booklet is designed to provide educators with a method of presenting important wildlife concepts while encouraging creative thinking. It is intended that each teacher will copy appropriate concepts to distribute to the class. It is not intend-ed to be given to each student as a coloring book.

The following wildlife concepts are in no spe-cific order. They address the relationships between animals and their environment and the interde-

pendence between wildlife and people. Educators should choose those pages appropriate for existing programs and use them to initiate a better under-standing of wildlife conservation.

Additional educational materials are avail-able through the Division of Wildlife’s Education Section and through the Wildlife District office nearest you.

Index1. Animals are often used as symbols for companies or sports teams. Design a symbol that would help advertise a

company or team you would like to own.2. Wearing a cap helps keep the sun’s glare out of your eyes. Design a cap you would wear while fishing out on a lake.3. If wild animals did not die, overpopulation would be a problem. What would a field or forest look like if too many

animals lived there?4. People enjoy wildlife in many ways. Design a postcard showing how wildlife provides recreation for people.5. Litter can hurt wild animals. Draw some things you have seen that have been carelessly discarded by people. 6. What kinds of things do you throw away that can be reused?7. Design a bumper sticker promoting litter clean-up.8. What does litter look like from an ant’s point of view?9. You are a diver. What litter have you found underwater?10. Fur or skin taken from animals can be used in making clothes or shoes. Draw some things made from animals’ hides.11. Watching and feeding birds in winter can be fun. Draw some birds that you might see eating from these feeders.12. Animals and people view the world differently. What does the world look like to a fish?13. Animals provide food, clothing, transportation, and recreation. Think of some ways you use animals.14. Wild animals often live in the city. What animals might you find in this backyard?15. After hunting or fishing all day, many campers prepare dinner over an open fire. What would you cook for dinner if

you had been successful?16. National Hunting and Fishing Day, Arbor Day, and Earth Day celebrate outdoor events. Design a banner to celebrate

one of these days.17. Wild animals appear in stories and fairy tales. Draw an animal that would be useful to people and fun to know. 18. Wild animals do not make good pets. Draw an animal that likes to live with people.19. Wild animals belong to us all. Draw your favorite animal that you could find in the wild.20. Raccoons, rats, or squirrels often cause damage and become a nuisance in people’s yards. Draw some problems they

may cause when living in a city.21. Songbirds, waterfowl, and birds of prey build various types of nests. Draw a nest that could be used to hold eggs or young birds.22. Trees provide homes for many insects and other small animals. What animals might live in this old tree?23. Weather often limits the size of animal populations. Draw what effects flooding, deep snow, ice storms, drought, or

high winds have on wildlife homes.24. Air and water pollution affect wildlife. Show how animals would be affected by a polluted stream or sky.25. Many animals feed on other animals. What might eat this bug?26. What might you do to this backyard to make it more attractive to wildlife?27. Many animals depend on soil for food and homes. What kinds of animals might you find living in the soil?28. Animals and plants depend on water to live. Which animals live around this pond?29. Plants and animals are renewable resources. Draw some young animals among these plants.30. Wildlife needs cover for protection from predators. What animals might be hiding in this fencerow?31. Many wildlife biologists are working to help save eagles and other rare birds of prey. Draw a magazine

advertisement that would encourage people to support this effort.32. Many wild animals have adaptations that help protect them from predators. Draw and color an animal that has

physical characteristics that help it hide.33. Birds often migrate during the spring and fall seasons. What birds might stop at this pond for food and rest on their

way south for the winter?34. Many insects are useful because they help pollinate plants. What does a flower look like to a bee?35. You can often find small animals living in holes in trees. Whose home is this?36. For animals to live and grow they need food, water, cover, and space. Draw a healthy home for these rabbits.37. Many animals use plants as their main source of food. Draw some animals that you have seen grazing.38. Most male birds, insects, and fish are more colorful than the females. Draw a butterfly using as many colors as you can.39. Crawdads, turtles, frogs, and fish live in streams or lakes. Draw something you might catch if you went wading.40. Many people hunt, fish, and trap for food. Draw a picture of an animal you have eaten.
