For the sixth consecutive year the exhibition runs at the Mall Galleries, London SW1 and includes four great exhibitions:

All works are for sale with contributions from each helping to support the Foundation’s conservation projects in Africa and Asia to help save endangered wildlife.

Art and conservation are synonymous with the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF). Founded by wildlife artist, David Shepherd CBE to give something back to the animals that helped establish his name as an artist, the Foundation has raised over £5million for conservation.

Three generations of the Shepherd family now support the Foundation’s work through their art; David Shepherd CBE, his daughter Mandy Shepherd and eldest granddaughter, Emily Shepherd. Their contrasting styles appeal to a wide range of art lovers and continue to excite great interest in the art world.

This week, five David Shepherd originals are on sale - four for the first time since they were commissioned - plus a fabulous selection from Mandy Shepherd and Emily Lamb.

The Wildlife Artist of the Year competition that forms the central focus of this week, provides an amazing opportunity to browse and buy original prices from established greats like Simon Gudgeon and Jonathan Truss to up and coming artists. You can view a selection of work here and see who won this year’s coveted title.

Also at the Mall Galleries, Jeremy Houghton’s ‘Urban Safari’ brings a splash of colour and energy to the Threadneedle Space.

Lastly, but by no means least, check out the celebrity tigers - original tiger sketches and paintings for sale by auction in support of the Foundation’s TigerTime campaign.

Wildlife Artist of the Year 2013

South African artist wins international art award in London South African artist, Simon Max Bannister, was named the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundations’ (DSWF) 2013 Wildlife Artist of the Year at a prize-giving event at the Mall Galleries in London tonight (June 3). He accepted the £10,000 top prize from wildlife artist and conservationist, David Shepherd CBE and special guest and DSWF supporter, David Gower.

Commenting on the winning piece – a large sculptural trio of giraffe – judge and

gallery owner Hazel Soan commented: “Oscar Wilde said that ‘art begins where imitation ends’ this sculpture synthesizes the essence of the giraffe with the spirit of the African bush, epitomising Wilde’s statement. Art should equal more than the sum of its parts; Bannister has achieved this with a form of three dimensional sketch, made up of short wooden brush strokes and lines.”

Simon Max Bannister has been creating sculptural artworks for the last three years. After working with his degree in Graphic Design he found the need to express his creativity in an alternative way. Be it earth, stone, leaf, water, light, shadow and even plastic, he grasps the energy and moulds it into a necessary and intriguing artistic dialogue. He is gifted with the ability to capture the essence of the medium he engages with. It is ultimately the creative processes of nature that inspire his creative endeavours. While keeping a diversity in materials, his style is unique and his passionate creativity is in tune

Wildlife Artist of the Year 2013with the climate of our challenging times. He is currently based at Londolozi Game Reserve, South Africa as artist in residence. He was left speechless by the win.

“The entries were quite magnificent this year and Simon is a very worthy winner,” said wildlife artist and conservationist, David Shepherd CBE who launched the art competition in 2008 to raise funds and awareness for endangered wildlife. “From the judges’ point of view the drama and technical excellence in all the work was quite breath-taking.”

Urban Safari Threadneedle SpaceJeremy Houghton is a highly prolific and collectable British Artist. Having trained at the Slade School of Art and the Universite de Provence, he was recently selected as one of BT’s Official Artists for the London 2012 Olympic Games. He has shown at many prestigious galleries including The Saatchi Gallery in London and the Everard Read Gallery in South Africa. He began painting in 2005 and among notable achievements and commissions he was official artist for London Fashion Week in 2007, painted HM the Queen in 2009 and is currently resident artist at Highgrove.

After teaching art in South Africa he left in 2005 and returned to his birthplace in The Cotswolds. However, images of Africa stayed with him and the image that personifies his time there is the flamingo. These at once solid and yet ethereal birds are captured in oil on canvas applied with deliberate abandon, forsaking any pretence of anatomical correctness in the process. The result is semi-abstract oil paintings that capture the colour and exuberance of the birds as a mass of pink energy moving across the canvas. Ignoring detail, he contrives to create shape and texture with a kinetic rhythm giving the impression of movement from bold brush strokes and from the textural build-up of paint.
