Our goal at the Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon is to provide a safe, fun camp experience that will stimulate your child’s creativity, sense of wonder and understanding of the natural world.

Each camp session will be a balance of art and nature, games and free-choice activities. We strive for quality in all areas of our camp program. Staff are trained in safety, and a range of skills from teaching techniques to working in specific art mediums.

Jayne DiCandio will be our Camp Director for the sixth year. She has been teaching environmental and art programs for over 16 years. Jayne is happy to answer any questions; call her at 781-81-8853 ext 101 or e-mail [email protected].

The new name reflects our unique role as the only museum focusing on American bird art—but our commitment to a quality camp experience for your child remains unchanged. Pottery kiln. We now have a kiln and can glaze and fire our pottery. Registration online. You can now register any time of day or night. Digital photography. For campers 7 and up, digital photography will be integrated into most camp weeks.

Home Tweet Home June 24-28Nests, burrows, and dens are some of the places animals call home. We’ll look for animal homes and check our bird boxes. Make fabulous homes out of recycled materials and play games like animal charades and what’s missing from this home.

Wet Paint! July 8-12 We’ll be creative with paint, using spray bottles, bubbles, splatter screens and homemade crazy brushes to make masterpieces. Look for wet wildlife like frogs and salamanders and play frog hopping and water games.

Protect Yourself! Aug 5-9Animals protect themselves from predators by using antlers, sharp teeth, claws and spines as well as camouflage. We’ll investigate these methods, have some guest animals and search the sanctuary for insects and other creatures. Our art will include a shark tooth necklace and a papier-mâché turtle shell.

Design and Build 5-6 June 24-28 Let’s design our own outdoor structure and use natural materials like mud, sticks and bark to build it. Investigate animal homes around the sanctuary and create mini homes for toads and insects.

Clay Wild July 1-3Nature exploration will inspire our clay artworks. We’ll recreate our favorite habitat, making animals and plants out of clay. We’ll fire our masterpieces in our new kiln and paint them, making a wildlife scene to take home.

Amazon Adventure July 8-12Campers will compare the exotic wildlife of the Amazon—such as spider monkeys, sloths and toucans—to the life along our stream. Make a life-sized otter, paint an underwater scene, and play lots of fun water games.

Turtle Time July 15-19Learn about turtles and snakes, in Massachusetts and around the world. Search the sanctuary for things that slither and meet several visiting guest reptiles. Play a snapping gator game, make a turtle shell and design a snake pattern.

Blast Off July 22-26Discover the moon, the sun and beyond! We’ll check out what NASA is doing on Mars and in space, and do some similar experiments here. Make a bubble-powered rocket and sun-powered glider. Look for sun-loving wildlife, like dragonflies and snakes. Families will be invited to return Thursday evening for a star party and night hike.

Treasure Hunters July 29-Aug 2Hear stories about famous treasure hunts, including ship wrecks and Egyptian tombs. Become an archaeologist as we dig in the sanctuary for clues of folks who lived here long ago. We’ll make a treasure chest and fill it with our own uniquely designed artifacts. Follow treasure maps, solve puzzle clues and use electronics to find a new treasure every day.

Prickles, Claws and Camouflage Aug 5-9Animals have many ways to protect themselves from predators, including sharp teeth, shells and pinchers. We will learn about the most interesting animal adaptations and look for some at the sanctuary. Have fun making up your own animal with an antler tail or maybe poisonous teeth!

Outdoor Architects June 24-28 Nothing is more fun than making things in nature using sticks, bark and mud. We will make structures and sculptures and get some inspiration from famous architectural designs. On a smaller scale we will design bug catchers and bird boxes.

Duct Tape Challenge MINI CAMP - 3 DAYS July 1-3They say anything can be made with duct tape. Let’s find out! Bring your imagination and help design and make useful items like a hammock or tunnels that can be used all summer long in our nature play area. We’ll also use decorative duct tape to make art.

Slippery When Wet July 8-12We’ll search for salamanders, tadpoles and fish in our stream, pond and vernal pool. Inspired by fresh water wildlife, we’ll make fish prints and art with slimy textured paint. And we’ll have duck races and play water games.

Jewelry Design July 15-19Campers will learn a variety of techniques for making jewelry, including metal working and macramé. We’ll use natural materials like shells, stones and beads to produce one-of-a-kind bracelets, necklaces and rings. Nature exploration and games will be included each day.

Reptile Discovery July 15-19We’ll look for snakes and turtles at the sanctuary as well as learn about larger snakes, alligators, crocodiles and sea turtles. There will be some reptile visitors this week and we’ll find out how scientists study local snake populations. Infinity and Beyond July 22-26Find out what NASA is learning about space, the sun and planets. Make things move with solar power and bake cookies in our solar oven. Launch a bubble-powered rocket and create asteroid art. Come back Thursday night for a star party and night hike.

Lost Worlds July 29-Aug 2American Indians & colonists walked the sanctuary land years ago. What did they leave behind? We’ll make an archaeological dig site and look for clues of past worlds in Canton and also learn about Egyptian past worlds. We’ll have treasure hunts, build a pyramid and make Egyptian gold artifacts.

Pottery Pandemonium Aug 5-9We’ll make cups and bowls on the wheel, and glaze and fire them in our new kiln. Hand-build your favorite animal making prickles, fur or scales out of clay. When not in the studio, we’ll explore the sanctuary’s habitats and play games.

Reptile Discovery July 15-19We’ll look for snakes and turtles at the sanctuary as well as learn about larger snakes, alligators, crocodiles and sea turtles. There will be some reptile visitors this week and we’ll find out how scientists study local snake populations. Make art with snake patterns, create a life size croc head and a turtle that can hide in its shell.

Big Bang Theory July 22-26Experiment with solar energy and gravity as we delve into the mysteries of stars and space. Make a sun dial, design your constellation, and study shadows with black-and-white photography. Shoot off a different nature powered rocket every day and make a telescope. Learn about the great archaeological treasure hunts in Egypt, including King Tut’s tomb. Recreate Tut’s famous burial mask, build a pyramid, design your own artifacts and play games like mummy races.

Action Adventure Moviemaking (with overnight) Aug 5-9Campers will create an adventure storyline, then act, film and direct a movie at the sanctuary and offsite at nearby locations. On Thursday night, campers will shoot some night scenes and spend the night in the estate house. Dinner on Thursday and breakfast and lunch on Friday will be provided.
