It was great seeing the large

turn out for the April meeting. I

was also pleased with the over-

whelming majority that voted to

host the 2013 Regional meet. Look

for an announcement of the

Regional meet management staff

coming soon. In the meantime we

have a lot of events coming up and

an active schedule in the next few

months.

Thank you for your contin-

ued support of our great club and

our hobby.

Note from the Editor

Remember, Richard and I

are attending the MAFCA National

Meet in Vancouver this summer.

An August newsletter will not be

printed. It is time to be thinking

about what you need to have pub-

lished in the June or July issues. In

the event you have an upcoming

tour during August or September,

you might want to consider printing

the details of your tour as early as

June.

The next MARC National

Membership Meet will be held in

St. Augustine, Florida on March

24th thru 27th of 2011. The Citrus

A‟s and First Coast Regions have

extended an invitation to us. Infor-

mation about this meet is on page

10-11 in this issue.

A little closer to home the

2010 MAFCA Membership Meet-

ing will be held in Colorado

Springs on December 8-11, 2010.

Their plans include attending the

Flying W Ranch for dinner and en-

tertainment, touring mansions, at-

tending Model A and Fashion

Seminars then finish with the ban-

quet and awards dinner.

Dear Wichita A‟s,

I want to Thank You for

making your trip to Southwest Kan-

sas and Beaver County. I hope your

road trip was wonderful!

I had the opportunity to view

your cars as you headed south out of

Liberal on your way to the Beaver

Cow Chip as I was leaving my home

along the highway at exactly the

same moments.

I was on my way to McPher-

son for a wedding, but on my return

trip at 12 midnight I drove through

the Super 8 Motel; parking lot so I

could get another view of your beau-

tiful cars.

I hope you were treated with

every kindness while you were in

Liberal.

Thanks & PLEASE

There seems to be a lot of interest in the Model

"A" fabric that Karen Wiley designed. Some of us

are thinking about sewing shirts and others are looking

at the material for pillows, quilting ideas, etc.

The following information is what Lenette re-

ceived from Karen Wiley, who sells the fabric:

“I am an avid Model “A” enthusiast and

crafter. I decided to design such a fabric. After getting

the necessary permission from Ford, and a fabric com-

pany that would produce it, project was underway

Fabric is 100% cotton, 45 inches wide and sold by

yard increments.”

Pricing is $12.50 per yard. Same price per

yard for any number of yards ordered.

Shipping & Handling:

1 – 2 yards = $5.95 S & H

3 – 12 yards = $11.95 S & H

13 – 20 yards = $14.95 S & H

Since shipping and handling chargers are

cheaper with a larger order, Lenette has graciously

volunteered to take combined orders for the Model A

Fabric. She will collect orders and money during the

May club meeting.

Beaver, Liberal Tour

Past Activities

Early on Friday April 16th, 23 Model A‟s carrying over 50 folks left McDonalds in West Wichita for a 237 mile

trek to Liberal, Ks. The Manager at McDonalds wanted to

know if we were going to the Zoo, (in west Wichita). When

we said, „no‟, Liberal, Kansas he seemed dumbfounded. Light rain was falling but it was never a problem as

we traveled in 3 groups. In Harper group 3 inadvertently

passed group 2 but it wasn‟t a problem, as long as we stayed spread out for smooth traffic flow.

We arrived in Ashland at 11:15 AM; right on sched-

ule for the lunch buffet that was prepared at the Ranch House. It was here that the Shearers from Dodge City

joined us in their 2 Model A‟s. The local Rest Home asked

us to drive by as we left town as their residents peered

through the windows at cars of yesteryear that they remem-ber.

While driving around the Meade, County Lake one

group took a wrong turn and ended up in the maintenance yard but there wasn‟t much delay.

As we arrived in Liberal at 3PM, we made our ap-

pointment at The Mid-America Air museum. 108, vintage, civilian and military aircraft are on display and we were

given a great reception. It was here that we met, Jimmy &

Bettie Brooks, who are club members from Hill City.

The evening was spent, exploring the many eating facilities, maintenance on the cars which included wash jobs

for some.

At 8:20 Saturday morning we left, Liberal for the 40 mile trek to Beaver. This weather was picture perfect, as we

descended into Beaver single file for a mile or more. The

residents seemed impressed and gave us a great reception.

The Frazer Family invited all 56 of us into their home for refreshments, where daughters, Hanna and Kayla had

baked cookies for us. And, Lynda Cushman treated us to a

music medley on the family piano. We lined up for the parade and the small town at-

mosphere was vibrant with American pride as the Cimarron

The Frazers moved to Beaver, Ok a year ago from their home town of Moundridge, Ks. Randy is the City Adminis-

trator and Marla works in a bank. Both report that numer-

ous residents expressed their appreciation for the Wichita

A‟s coming to Beaver and were hopeful we would return.

Territory Celebration began. There was a large variety of floats but of course the Model A line-up seemed to be the

favorite.

From the parade we went to the Fairgrounds, where food

and arts and crafts vendors were set up and lots of people were in a festive mood.

The Wichita A‟s sponsored 2 teams, the A-Bones

and the 4-Bamgers, for the cow chip throwing contest. Our teams didn‟t make a very good showing but at least they all

got free T-Shirts from the event.

Then we went back to Liberal where we had a BBQ dinner at Billie‟s Mexican Restaurant complete with reserved park-

ing and a room to ourselves.

Sunday morning we left at 8:00 am and took a dif-

ferent route home, through Sublette, Montezuma, Ford and to Greensburg where Tom & Dea Corns had arranged a

BBQ lunch for us. The Corns gave us a recap of there ex-

periences during the devastating tornado that hit the town 3 years ago and then took us on a tour of the new Hospital and

a drive around town to view the New Greensburg.

From There we headed for home on Hwy54/400 with the last rest stop in Kingman. We all arrived home,

early evening, very tired but also satisfied that we had a very

interesting and fun week-end while driving our Model A‟s.

With an average of 550 miles per car we determined that we had just driven 13,750 trouble free Model A miles. RG

Early AM at McDonalds with rainy weather.

Judging from the way the wind was blowing the day before the tour,

we thought 21 Model A's would be able to just coast all the way to Manhat-

tan. But, we were blessed with a beautiful, sunshine and windless week-

end. One car had to catch up with us in Manhattan as he broke down a few

miles from their home. That is a great story all by itself which Gary Hileman

will tell at the meeting!

We had lunch at the brand new club house at Colbert Hills Golf

Course. Each table had a two-sided frame that held pictures of different

A's. The event coordinator had looked up our website and downloaded the

pictures and our logo from there. Then on to Pillsbury Crossing (always an

unexpected sight there!) and then the insect zoo and the vet medicine tours on

campus.

We are so grateful to our Manhattan club members who made most of

the tour on Saturday. Bud Valerius showed us his Model A projects at The

Pit Stop with refreshments for us. We visited A Blast from the Past, an in-

credible antique and memorabilia place owned by 87 year-old Blaine Thomas

who had a story for every item. Dave & Claudette Laurie lead us to Duncan's

Garage ('32 Ford cars & parts), the Tuttle Creek area, the KSU Boathouse, a

visit to their beautiful home for refreshments and a look at Dave's antique car

collection and, lastly, Steve Borland's T-Bird collection.

We traveled home Sunday with a stop just outside of Abilene for

lunch at Mr. K's Farmhouse Restaurant and then stopping at Carlton to check on the signs that our club has been

"planting" there on tours passing through that area. The original sign of 10 Model A's stopping there in 1987

HAS BEEN FOUND! It had been "plucked" and brought to us probably more than 10 yrs. ago for restora-

tion. We had taped a garage sale sign over it and then put it away in our lawn shed and totally forgot about it. It

will be restored and "replanted" alongside club signs of 1996, 2000 & 2003. What prompted the first sign? A

local (we assume) had erected a large sign which read: IN 1986 NOTHING HAPPENED HERE!

We hope everyone had some fun. Thanks to all for making the trip.

"Charlie" Hawthorne Passes

1927 - 2010

Charlie was a native Kansan and served the

Boeing Co for 37 years both in Wichita and TDY in

Maine, Louisiana, Florida and etc. While stationed in

Louisiana in 1977 Charlie purchased his ‟30 Model A

Sport Coupe with restoration in mind. In the mid

eighties Charlie retired from Boeing. At that time he

purchased another Tudor Model A so they could tour

with the club while he was finishing his Sport Coupe.

Charlie & Vinita were having so much fun

with club activities it was 1992 before he finished the Sport Coupe.

The Hawthornes were always very active in promoting club activities, assisting other

members with parts, facilities and tools. During this time period Charlie accumulated several

Model A‟s.

Several years ago the Hawthornes purchased a property retreat in Shell Knob, Mo. As A

result we didn‟t see so much of them but they were always active when in town.

Our deepest sympathy to Vinita and the Family.

You’re Invited! M.A.R.C National Membership Meet March 24th- 27th, 2011

To Our M.A.R.C Friends and Families

Please Join Us in St. Augustine! On behalf of the Citrus A’s and First Coast Regions, we are extending an invitation to Discover St. Augustine as we are privileged to host the 2011 M.A.R.C. National Membership Meet. Historic St. Augustine is truly a unique venue to publicly display, take photos and be photographed on one or more of our escorted Model A tours -- catch up with friends both old and new, and perhaps latch onto some rare vintage accessories at our Giant Model “A” Swap fest.

Yearn To Learn! It’s also an opportunity to study body styles, exchange ideas, ask questions, and learn more about the Model "A.” New to the hobby or expert but ever curious? Why not sign up to attend one or more M.A.R.C. and M.A.F.F.I. (Model A Ford Foundation) technical and period fashion seminars conducted by our hobby’s celebrated experts. Also, if your Model A family typically rides” shotgun” but believes spark advance, choke or double-clutch shift is a stylistic form of Charleston Shimmy, we urge you to take advantage of our “hands on” Model A driving seminar!

“Time Spent with Model A’s is Never Wasted” (Apologies to Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette) Your host regions have planned for more activities and events than you’ll have time to spare for so that each family member has a wonderful ex-perience.

Let’s Talk Tours! The annual Model A Restorer’s Club National Membership Meet is held each Spring to present opportunities to drive your Model A. We hope you’ll join us in an escorted lighthouse dinner tour (Friday 3/25) of America’s Oldest City with VIP display parking around St. Augustine’s historic central square. Dinner is ala carte and you’ll have dozens of great eateries within easy walking distance. Plan to be back to the Marriott Renaissance by 8pm to attend our gala Ice Cream Social Welcome Party. Want to explore the bolder side of speed? Take a day tour - Saturday March 26th by motor coach or Model A caravan all the way to the Victory Lane Winner’s Circle for a very special Model A photo at the Daytona International Speedway! Participants will enjoy the 2011 Daytona Beach Spring Car Show and all pre-registers will receive a goody bag. In addition to the infield Car Show and flea market activities, we have The Daytona 500 Experi-ence which takes you from racing’s origins to the home of the world’s most exciting motor sport, NASCAR racing. The Daytona 500 Experience includes: Discounted Group Admission for M.A.R.C. members, a speedway tour of the 31 degree high-banked turns to the Gatorade Victory Lane, a step back in time to see where the Daytona 500 started, a step forward to the present to see the current Daytona 500 winning car in the exact condition as when it crossed the finish line and the Coca-Cola IMAX Theatre presenting NASCAR 3D

No Wire Wheels / No Problem! our host regions have also arranged for city tours of St. Augustine for guests who prefer to leave the driving to the local guides. Continue

blouse, and a skirt that closes down the front yoke with buttons.

No. 6079. A narrow belt is a sign of the new season when worn on a straight line utility coat. Additional style features are

a deep pointed yoke and pointed sections on the sleeves.

No. 6082. Little capes appear on every type of costume to give

the wide-shoulder-line silhouette. The little cape on this coat is

accented by curving the fronts of the coat to match.

If you dare, check out Friday night’s Ghosts and Gravestones Haunted Tour of St. Augustine, beginning at 10pm following our Ice Cream Social event. Saturday’s events mix it up with a variety of seminars, “Ancient City” day tours and/or excursion to the Daytona Beach Spring Car Show at the Daytona International Speedway. Just minutes away from our host hotel, The Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village, ladies will most assuredly enjoy the recently renovated and celebrated, Prime Outlets Mall. St. Augustine; the premier outlet shopping destination in northeast Florida. Showcased here are more than 75 top outlet stores offering savings of up to 65%. A veritable “who’s who” of luxury names includes Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH, Juicy Couture and Cole Haan, as well as Gucci’s only outlet store in the southeastern United States. Between swap fest bargain hunting and shopping, check out the World Golf Village IMAX Theatre, WGV Golf Hall of Fame museum and the fine resort amenities which are on site at The Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village. Future Model “A” Kids, Grandkids and the Young at Heart are sure to enjoy our “Ancient City” attractions. Here’s a sampling:

Castillo de San Marcos - This is the one place no one should miss when coming to St. Augustine. The fort is the oldest and largest stone fort in the conti-nental U.S. The fort was built by the Spanish during 1672 – 1695 with blocks of coquina. Ranger tours are available each day, and live cannon firings are held most Saturdays. It is a National Park Service facility.

Crocodile Feedings at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm & Zoological Park 3:00pm every Saturday. Maximo, a 15-foot crocodile from Australia will be emerging from the water to devour his meal each Saturday. Quite a spectacular thing to see, Maximo is one of the many reasons why so many locals buy annual passes to this wonderful Zoological Park. Springtime in the wild bird rookery along the boardwalk that runs over the Alligator Swamp is a wonderful place to capture great photographs of nesting and hatching wading birds.

Ripley’s Believe It Or Not - The original Ripley’s where you can witness mystical treasures, international oddities and exotic art forms. Located in a beau-tifully restored 1887 historic landmark; it is fun for the whole family.

Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse - The automated professor and students dressed in period clothing relate the school’s history and explain the barter sys-tem, subjects studied, and use of the dunce cap.

The Authentic Old Jail - The Jail includes guided tours by our deputies and inmates. Guests can visit the cells, maximum-security area, and a large col-lection of guns used in actual crimes

Whatever your pleasure, we hope to see you at the Saturday evening banquet. With great entertainment, photo opportunities and your good company, this evening is definitely an “A” list place to be seen and heard!
