DIRECTOR ’S NOTES

The Comedy of Errors best characterizes Shakespeare’s fascination with mistaken identity. Shakespeare often employs disguises and gender flip-flops as one of many devices to craft his stories but in The Comedy of Errors this technique is the spine of the play, the center where the characters, setting, and story originate.

We can only speculate about Shakespeare’s attraction to mistaken identity but underneath every moment of hilarity in The Comedy of Errors is a person yearning for something or someone. In every instance where a character aches, Shakespeare concocts a game or comedic gag that eases the pain. He blends tragic situations with comedic resolutions. Charlie Chaplin said of Shakespeare, “[His] Laughter is the tonic, the relief, the surcease for pain.”

Like many only children, I longed for a sibling so I invented one by telling people that I had an older brother in college. He became real and changed my identity. Oh, the inexplicable joy I felt because I had a brother! Years later, I told my directing teacher of my childhood charade; he responded by giving me a copy of The Comedy of Errors commenting, “I think someone else has played your game, too.” With each page, I quickly identified with two brothers searching for each other and the hilarity of deception became all too familiar. As each character failed to recognize one another, I smiled and thought of “my brother” and wondered if he would be able to recognize me after all of these years. Our identities, real or imagined, always seem to provide comedy as an antidote for the commonplace.

This season, we present Romeo and Juliet in repertory with The Comedy of Errors, our thirty-first production of Shakespeare’s work. The company will be touring to 32 cities and towns in 20 states across the country. While on tour, we present master classes, student matinees and one-hour, performance-based workshops of Shakespeare for younger audiences. Our Literacy Through Theater program, a weeklong artistic residency, is the centerpiece of our education program. Teaching artists involve students in all aspects of the plays being presented on our tour. They explore writing, communications, poetry, character development and other facets of theater before seeing the production and spending the day with our actors.

The Acting Company is a TONY Honoree for Excellence in Theater and has also won the Obie Award, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, Citibank’s Excellence in Education Award and two Audelco Awards.

Kaliswa Brewster Credits: Daughter at Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Iliad and The Comedy of Errors for Aquila Theatre Company’s national tour, Under Milk Wood at Williamstown Theatre Festival, The Learned Ladies for SRT. A native of Seattle, WA and an MFA graduate of American Conservatory Theater, she ap-peared in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Wendy Play and Intimate Apparel.

Ray Chapman returns for his second Acting Company/Guthrie Theater season. Other credits include: The Goodman Theatre, Oregon Shake-speare Festival, Denver Center Theatre Company, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville, and Utah Shakespearean Festival, among many others. Film and Televi-sion credits include: A League of Their Own and Prison Break. Ray is a native of Butte Creek, MT.

Andrew Wade (Voice and Speech Consultant) Acting Company: Romeo and Juliet, Henry V. Former Head of Voice at Royal Shakespeare Company, Andrew works worldwide with numerous celebrities, movies and theatrical works including Shakespeare in Love and Lord of the Rings, The Musical. He trained at Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama and is affiliated with The Guthrie and University of Minnesota.

Jesse Jou (Staff Repertory Director) New York International Fringe Festival, Kitchen Theatre Company (Ithaca, NY), Yale Cabaret, Fluid Motion Theater and Film and the American

Theatre of Actors. Jesse earned an M.F.A in directing from the Yale School of Drama, where he was the artistic director of the 2010 Yale Summer Cabaret.

Karen Parlato (Production Stage Manager) Third tour with The Acting Company. Credits include The Phantom of the Opera (Broadway), Frankenstein, The Fantasticks, and others (Off-Bway). In the last six years she’s been PSM for 18 summer stock musicals. Karen studied directing at NYU/Tisch (BFA).

Meaghan Rosenberger (Assistant Stage Manager) Guthrie Experience 2010; Guthrie Theatre: Caretaker, Happy Days and Tiny Kushner: An Evening of Short Plays. Meaghan was the stage management intern for The Acting Company’s Henry V. Graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage Management. Joe Dowling (Director, Guthrie Theater) has directed more than 35 productions at the Guthrie since 1995, including landmark productions of Shakespeare, Chekhov, Stoppard and Friel. Under Dowling’s leadership, the Guthrie has enjoyed tremendous growth, including the 2006 opening of a new Guthrie on banks of the Mississippi River. Dowling has been artistic director of Ireland’s Abbey Theatre and managing/artistic director of Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre. His American work includes numerous productions in New York and Washington, D.C.

Margot Harley (Producing Artistic Director, The Acting Company) co-founded The Acting Company with John Houseman.
