Why...

...do we wear a sweater and mittens in winter? does a cup of coffee come in a styrofoam cup? do metal spoons get hot when we put them in a hot bowl of soup?

Nov 61:04 PM

All substances are made up of tiny particles too small to be seen

The particles are always in motion

Your Picture

Nov 61:20 PM

When heat is added to a substance, the particles move faster

Boiling Water Ice Water

Which container has the fastest moving particles?

Room Temp. Water

Nov 1112:01 PM

Thermal Energy The energy of moving particles

in a substance

2

Nov 61:20 PM

When the particles move faster the temperature increases.

Nov 61:18 PM

TemperatureMeasure of thermal energy in a substance

Jan 1112:53 PM

Katie is getting ready to leave for school. Before leaving, she checks the temperature to see if she needs a coat. The temperature is 2o C. Does she need a coat?

Review

• Thermal energy is ___________________________.

• When heat is added to a substance its particles move ________.

• When the particles move __________ the temperature increases.

• We measure thermal energy of a substance by finding its __________.

• Which container is a conductor? Which is an insulator? How do you know?

Nov 1011:34 AM

The more particles a substance has, the more thermal energy it has

Nov 61:21 PM

Conduction occurs when thermal energy moves from hot

to cold substances.

Nov 61:13 PM

ConductorA material that allows thermal energy to

pass through it easily

4

Nov 61:14 PM

InsulatorA material that does not let thermal energy

pass through it easily

Jan 129:45 AM

With your table, tell how a drink coozie keeps your drink cold. Use the words conduction and insulator in your answer. Write your answer on an index card.

Goldilocks & the Three Bears

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Goldilocks. She went for a walk in the forest. Pretty soon, she came upon a house. She knocked and, when no one answered, she walked right in.

At the table in the kitchen, there were three bowls of porridge. Goldilocks was hungry. She tasted the porridge from the first bowl. "This porridge is too hot!" she exclaimed. So, she tasted the porridge from the second bowl."This porridge is too cold," she saidSo, she tasted the last bowl of porridge."Ahhh, this porridge is just right," she said happily and she ate it all up.

Jan 118:51 AM

Why is the porridge hot in one bowl, cold in another, and warm in another?

Planning an Experiment

Oct 1010:45 AM

What can we change (variables)? Things we could measure or observe

Sep 169:35 AM

Variables What we change in an experiment.

They affect the results.

Sep 177:38 AM

Question/ProblemScientific question to be answered

6

Nov 1710:39 AM

Writing a Testable Question

variable + what you want to measure

Does a cover affect the temperature of water after ten minutes?

Sep 177:41 AM

HypothesisAn educated prediction that can be tested by

further investigation

Write as an "If...then..." statement:

If I put a cover on a cup of hot water, then it will be hotter after ten minutes than a cup without a lid.

A Little Practice

Sara has two different marbles of the same size, but different weights. She wants to know which one would land first if they were dropped at the same time. She goes out to a balcony and drops the marbles onto the lawn below.

With your partner:1. Think of the testable question that Sara is investigating.2. Think of a hypothesis that she could make. 3. What variable is being tested?

Jan 187:54 AM

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

2. Bake cookies for 12 minutes.

3. Spoon cookie dough onto baking sheet.

4. Mix ingredients in large bowl.

Recipe for CC cookies(Writing your procedure is like writing a recipe.)

Procedure the process, or steps, of your experiment

Aug 268:41 AM

Writing a procedure

• Sequential write steps in order• Specific tell exactly how much water you will use; the type and number of cups; how long the experiment will go on; how many times you will measure the temperature, etc. • Write the procedure for someone else. Pretend like you want them to do the experiment. Therefore, be as clear as possible about how to do the procedure.

Sep 177:54 AM

Results/Datathe information you collect during your procedure;

Sep 169:00 AM

Conclusions statements that you think are true based on

the results of an experiment

8

Nov 1710:45 AM

• Use vocabulary not hotter, but higher temperature• Results Sentence State what happened in your experiment (the differences in temperature). Do not try to explain. • Conclusion. Write a statement that tells what you learned about your question.

Results and Conclusions

Aug 2712:15 PM

Hannah thinks that hot water will dissolve sugar faster than cold water. She sets up an experiment by filling two cups with an equal amount of water. In one cup the water is very hot and in the other cup the water is very cold. She places one teaspoon of sugar in each cup and then stirs the sugar. Hannah times how long it takes the sugar to dissolve in each cup. Here are her results:

Hot water 30 secCold water 1 min 28 sec

One of the following is a results statement and one is a conclusion. Can you determine each?

Hot water dissolves sugar faster than cold water.

PullPull

The sugar dissolved in the hot water in 30 seconds and 1 minute 28 seconds in the cold water.
