Nottinghamshire’s manufacturing and logistics core

Ashfield and Mansfield: Well-connected

Ashfield and Mansfield’s transport links, available

workforce and available land explain why the area

continues to grow as a major regional centre for

logistics and manufacturing.

The area’s proximity to the M1, easy access to East Coast ports and East Midlands Airport, the busiest cargo airport in the UK, put Ashfield and Mansfield at the top of the list for any distribution dependent business with national or international ambitions.

Ashfield and Mansfield provides an ideal hub for logistics operations. In addition to key locational advantages, the area offers space for business with over 400 acres of development land and a wide range of high-quality commercial property available. All this is enhanced by specialist logistics training offered by Vision West Nottinghamshire College. Such is the importance of logistics that the local Chamber of Commerce holds a regular logistics and transport forum to address specific sectoral issues.

Manufacturers need good transport links too, with premises in the right location and access to the right employees. The wealth of skills locally available is complemented by nearby, commutable cities: Derby, Nottingham and Sheffield.

Advanced manufacturing firms are vitally

important to Ashfield and Mansfield,

benefiting from competitive rates of pay,

strong work ethic, tailored training and

great locational advantages. Vision West

Nottinghamshire College has developed a

world-class, £5.8m engineering and

innovation centre to support this sector.

Building on solid manufacturing traditions,

our workforce is not only adaptable, it is

also used to shift-working and continuous

improvement methods.

Ashfield and Mansfield is home to many

world-class manufacturers, including

Rolls Royce, Bombardier and Toray,

supported by an agile and fast-growing

network of smaller companies. There are

extensive supply chain opportunities

through these businesses locally, with

important well-defined trade routes

regionally and nationally. To underline this

sector’s importance, Ashfield and

Mansfield is recognised as the eighth

highest ranking city in terms of population

employed in the engineering industry.

Bombardier makes tracks for Castlewood

BTROS Electronics, part of the Bombardier Transportation Group, is a market leader in the design, manufacture and supply of specialist passenger information systems for the rail industry.

They contacted Invest Ashfield & Mansfield to help find more suitable premises that better reflected the company’s high-tech image. They wanted to stay within the immediate locality in order to retain the valuable skills of their local workforce.

The best option was a purpose-built industrial unit on Castlewood, not only due to the high quality of the building but also as it offered immediate access to J28 of the M1.

These excellent road links are vital to access customers ranging from the north of Scotland to the south-east of England and the site also benefits from good mainline rail links and access to airports, supporting the company’s export trade.

General Manager, Stewart Kidston, commented: “The move has really worked well for the company, resulting in improvements to efficiency and customer service. We now have premises which reflect the company ethos well, not only safeguarding these jobs but also providing a solid base for growth for the foreseeable future.”
