A subsidiary of Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO), IPO EducationFoundation (IPOEF) is devoted to educational and charitable activities designed

to protect intellectual property rights and encourage innovation. The Foundation iscommitted to educating the public on the importance of intellectual property rights tothe national and global economies.

In its fifth year, the Foundation’s mission is to:

6th International Judges Conference: 23–25 May 2011IPO Education Foundation is pleased to announce the 6th InternationalJudges Conference on Intellectual Property Law, 23–25 May 2011, atHotel le Plaza in Brussels, Belgium. This conference will be held incooperation with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and courtsincluding the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

The 2011 conference will bemodeled after previousconferences, including most

recently in 2009 inWashington, DC, where

more than thirtycountries wererepresented.

Public Awareness Video —Spotlight On: The U.S. Patent System

In 2008, the Foundation produced a 5-minuteeducational video for PBS member affiliateswith the goal of educating the public on theimportance of the U.S. Patent System. DeanKamen, inventor of the Segway® personaltransporter, is featured in the video entitled“Spotlight On: The U.S. Patent System.”During his interview, he says, “The patentsystem is nothing more than a way toencourage people to innovate... to takerisks... to make the world a better place.”

Also featured in the video are interviews withDr. Donald Keck, co-inventor oftelecommunications fiber optics, and Dr.Amar Bose, inventor of Bose® sound systems.

IP Video ContestThe Foundation plans to launch an IP video contest for teens andyoung adults in 2011. The goal is to reach a broader audienceabout the importance of intellectualproperty rights and innovation.

With additional fundraising, theFoundation will continue to develop abroad-reaching public awarenesscampaign that emphasizes how theintellectual property system encouragesinnovation and creativity and strengthensthe national economy.

Distinguished IP Professional Award

In 2010, the Foundation honored ChiefJudge (Ret.) Paul R. Michel, U.S. Court ofAppeals for the Federal Circuit, with the ThirdDistinguished IP Professional Award for hisoutstanding leadership and lifetimecommitment to invention and innovation.

Previous recipients include the Hon. PaulineNewman (2009) and the Hon. Alan Lourie(2008) from the U.S. Court of Appeals forthe Federal Circuit.
