Founded in 2007, Probax has over 10 years experience in cloud backup and disaster recovery solutions
10+ Years
• Rumors of the death of tape having been circulating for about 30 years!
• Tape became the standard for long-term storage due to the relatively high price of hard disk drives.
Is Tape Really On The Way Out?
2007• LTO-4 was released with 800GB raw data capacity• 1TB hard drive was produced by Hitachi
2010
• LTO-5 was released with 1.5TB raw data capacity• 3TB hard drive was produced by Seagate and Western Digital• Frist hard drive manufactured with 4K bytes a block instead
of 512 bytes a block.
2011
• 4TB hard drive was produced by Seagate
2012
• LTO-6 was released with 2.5TB raw data capacity• Western Digital announces the first 2.5in, 5mm thick drive,
and first 2.5in, 7mm thick drive with two platters• TDK demonstrates 2TB on a single 3.5in platter
A SnapShot Of The Last 10 Years*
2013• Seagate announces 5TB hard drive using Shingled Magnetic
Recording (SMR)• HGST announces 6TB helium-filled hard drive for enterprise
2014
• Seagate introduces 6TB hard drives that do not use helium, improving power consumption and lowering costs
• Seagate ships world’s first 8TB disks
2015
• LTO-7 was released with 6TB raw data capacity• HGST introduces SMR & conventional PMR 10TB hard drives
2017
• LTO-8 was released with 12TB raw data capacity• Western Digital announces 12TB helium hard drive• Toshiba announces 14TB PMR hard drive, due early 2018

• Rumors of the death of tape having been circulating for about 30 years!
• Tape became the standard for long-term storage due to the relatively high price of hard disk drives.
• The price war between tape and cloud storage began over 6 years ago. Cloud storage prices are currently in the cents per GB range. Honeycomb archival storage from Probax is as low as 0.9c per GB!
• Now, instead of buying tapes every month and tape libraries and maintenance every few years, organisations can get a backup and archiving solution on a pay-as-you-go basis.
• But clould storage is still not as cheap as tape?

Cost of restoration
Cost of replica charges
Yes. It’s not dead (yet), but it’s dying

Find it challenging to locate andrestore legacy data from tape

Ransomware Timeline

New ransomware families by year of discovery
• Satan was flagged on 17th January by security researcher Xylitol.
• This service allows anyone to register an account (for free) and create their very own customised version of the Satan Ransomware (in less than a minute).
• A user can specify the ransom amount, how much it goes up after a certain amount of days, and the amount of days that the ransom payment should increase.
• This particular RaaS is the first to offer the user help with distributing the ransomware via SPAM or other means.
• When the Satan Ransomware is deployed it will begin to encrypt data on the computer.
• Through the RaaS website, registered users can see how many of the ransomware instances they sent out were successful, and the amount they’ve earned so far.
Satan: A New RaaS
1. Without air gapped backups, businesses are no longer protected.
Air gapped backups: “offline” backups that cannot be manipulated or deleted remotely
2. The threat of an employee creating and deploying RaaS in their workplace is more real than ever.
What Are The Risks?
Introducing Honeycomb VTL
Honeycomb VTL: Preparing Veeam
Honeycomb VTL: Turning it on
• Honeycomb availability already shown in Control• One click to enable
Honeycomb VTL: What it looks like
• Hyperformance repository size stays the same• Not visible by local software - totally air-gapped for added protection
Honeycomb VTL: Restore Point details
• Minimum expiry as well as air-gapping• Restore keeps original point in Honeycomb
