WHY IS IT THAT

Why is it that so many of us see only scatter-grams of the

enclaves of wisdom, depravity, and ignorance in the

accumulations of our deep reflections, and focus too much onthe raw estiality of man! "ne would thin# that from the

passions of our $worst and est% we would have shed the

$less than% and put on the coat of the $more than% of our

#ind& The distillation of our goodness'#indness to our self,

family, and trie'has episodically shown itself, and yet the

lingerings of madness continue& The sway etween e(tremes,the gentle sweetness of honey and the itter her, has een all

that many could see& Hatred and e(pedience has led us to

slaughter oth others and our own& In cold lood and hot, we

have sinned against us all& "ne would have hoped the )ourney

had een long enough for us to grow up and out, away from

the destruction of our #ind and the treasures of the ages& *ut

no, the creatures of the dar#ness yet roam& +reatness andmalevolence is carried in our minds and hearts& It has een

written $We #now so little& We pretend so much&%. We

have yet to learn enough to read the tea leaves of our times

and our own #ind& The genes, the hearts, the minds of the

species, they all carry the written and unwritten codes of

conduct that have irthed the saints and the cra/ies of history'a history that was, is now, and forever shall e& 01 Still

some of us ma#e, in all of this, vain and real attempts to parse

the good from the ad, the mercy and the )ustice in the

softness and the hard& We try to mete out oth in the hours of

our lives, ounded moments, in which we love and hate in a

time we li#e to call our own&We even spea# aout an

infinitude of heaven and hell, when deep down inside we#now the limits of our lives and those lives that spring from
