I support the Brattle because it is a place where people can see my films

the way they are meant to be seen—on a movie screen.

It is a special experience to watch a film there with an audience. Watching a movie on your TV or computer could never have the same impact.

I support the Brattle because it is part of my community. My parents went there when they were young, and later they introduced my sister and me to the place when we were growing up in Harvard Square. I want others to have the opportunity to make the Brattle a part of their lives too.

Riddle me this: Why do smart patrons of the arts like yourself support the Brattle Theatre, a one-of-a-kind movie-house in a land of shiny multi-screen cinemas?

Is it because of the Brattle Theatre’s rich history as a cultural landmark in Harvard Square? It has operated as an independent single-screen movie-house in historic Brattle Hall for 57 years, making it one of the oldest and most cherished places in Cambridge. The Brattle has become the area’s go-to venue for film fans young and old. We’ve heard so many successful producers, directors and actors who spent time in the Greater Boston area wistfully recall their experiences at the Brattle—and recall their favorite seats in the balcony.

Is it because of the unique ways that the Brattle celebrates film as an art form? We offer something cinematic for every taste. Whether you love Bugs Bunny or anime, the Marx Brothers or the Coen Brothers, Bogart or Bigelow, Truffaut or the Terminator, you’ll find a screening at the Brattle. (And those were just in 2009!) Patrons continuously discover fresh angles on classics and exciting new films because of our blend of repertory programming, independent-film premieres, film festivals, special events and partnerships. It’s no wonder that the Brattle Theatre was chosen to host the Boston Society of Film Critics Awards ceremony last year.

Is it because of the Brattle’s service to the local community, including both occasional movie-goers and dedicated cinephiles? The Brattle’s Elements of Cinema series screens films we consider essential, free of charge, so everyone can enjoy the best that cinema has to offer. And we engage the area’s film audiences through partnerships, such as our Best of Open Screen night, at which up-and-coming New England filmmakers screen short films.

For whatever reason you support the Brattle, we could not have reached the achievements of the past year without you. Thank you. We hope you enjoy this annual report which details what your support has made possible. We have even bigger plans for 2010, which marks the 10th anniversary of the Brattle Theatre’s transformation into a nonprofit organization. We’re excited to celebrate that milestone with all of you —our patrons, members, donors, volunteers and community.

Tell us why you love The Brattle when we see you next. We look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you again for your tremendous support,

Over the past year, the Brattle Theatre premiered 29 feature films and produced 66 repertory programs. Of our 29 premiers, we garnered 19 3- and 4-star reviews and several appeared on year end Top 10 lists by local and national film critics.

We also hosted 12 regional film festivals and continued to partner with other local and national cultural organizations to offer a diverse range of programs. Highlights of the year include:

area premiere of la danse with director fred wiseman In 2009, a number of filmmakers visited the Brattle for their films’ area premieres. It was a special honor to premiere legendary documentarian Fred Wiseman’s latest film, La Danse, and host him for Q&As opening weekend.

70th anniversary of gone with the windGone with the Wind is a classic movie that deserves to be seen and discussed. In celebra-tion of the anniversary of this epic, we screened the film and invited renowned writer Molly Haskell to discuss why the saga of Scarlett O’Hara still captivates audiences today.

25th boston lgbt film festivalThe Brattle was proud to be part of this local festival’s 25th anni-versary as they expanded to new venues. The inclusion of locations such as the Brattle brought an increase in the range and number of films, guests and panels as well as a greater vitality to this vener-able and important festival.

Trailer Smackdown and Boston Cinema Census, we now partner with Open Screen—a monthly ‘open mic night’ for New Eng-land’s underground, fringe, student and outsider filmmakers—to host their annual Best of Open Screen program. In addition to screening the winning films, the evening includes an award show and Q&A with the filmmakers.

In 2009, the Brattle hosted a number of exciting special events including author readings, live music and appearances by film directors and actors.

We also participated in a number of local events such as the inaugu-ral Boston Book Festival, Forever Young: A Celebration of Folk Mu-sic and its Harvard Square Roots, Harvard Square’s Oktoberfest and May Fair, and the Harvard Theatre Collections’ centennial celebration of the Ballet Russes.

new year’s day marx brothers marathonWhat better way to celebrate the New Year than with laughter? For the third year in a row we screened a full day of back-to-back Marx Brothers films. The house was packed as our audi-ence laughed-until-they-cried at the antics of Groucho, Harpo and Chico!

annual oscar party In its 9th year, this is our longest-running special event. We all know that the Oscars are the Super Bowl for movielovers and we celebrate it with a cinema full of Brattle members. We plug in the lights, roll out the red carpet and invite our members to watch the Academy Awards on the big screen. It is a night not to be missed!

boston book festivalWe were thrilled to participate in the inaugural Boston Book Festival. We hosted an event featuring a preview screening of a new film about Jack Ker-ouac. We also partnered with the festival for their Boston Noir event by producing a clip reel of crime movies filmed in and around Boston and programming a week-long series of these films, including Gone Baby Gone and The Friends of Eddie Coyle.

As I write this letter, the Brattle has just entered its 10th year as a nonprofit under the auspices of the Brattle Film Foundation. Reflecting on the successes of 2009, I realize that it was exactly the kind of year that makes me glad that we undertook this great adventure.

One of the things that drew me to seeing films at the Brattle and, eventually, to wanting to usher it into a new century of activity was the programming philosophy established at its inception in 1953. The founders of the Brattle Theatre had a remarkable acumen for presenting essential films from around the world—whether they were created by an exist-ing master; at the vanguard of a new film movement; or were just a heck of a lot of fun to watch on screen. During the golden age of television, the Brattle was a bastion for seeing great films the way they were meant to be seen: on the big screen, in a darkened cinema, with an audience of strangers, popcorn and soda (or often coffee) in hand.

Now, as the tradition of movie-going enters a new era, with films available on demand to computers, TVs and cellphones around the world, the Brattle continues to uphold its original mission. Over the past year, I have seen a shift that gives me hope for the future of film exhibition—more new faces, young and old, are experiencing films on the big screen at the Brattle. My favorite example of this occurred during this past summer’s Errol Flynn centennial series when a group of teenagers on the prowl in Harvard Square were stopped in their tracks by our poster for Captain Blood and, after a brief discussion, decided to come inside and watch the 1935 pirate adventure. I know they didn’t leave disappointed as this is exactly the kind of film that benefits from a theatrical screening—what might seem hokey on the small screen magically becomes stirring and exciting when seen larger-than-life.

In 2009, we introduced audiences to new films by world-renowned filmmakers such as Andrzej Wajda, Frederick Wiseman, Ondi Timoner and Ole Bornedall. We presented se-ries that highlighted topics including post-WWII propaganda, the epic films of David Lean, the game-changing films of the 1970s and movies based on the fiction of Edgar Allan Poe. We hosted events and festivals that celebrated cinema in all its forms—from local to global; sublime to ridiculous.

This range of films and programs makes the Brattle an indispensible part of Boston’s cul-tural landscape. It is a major reason I chose to invest my energy and passion into founding the Brattle Film Foundation and it’s why I’m continually grateful at how many people—just like you—have shown their support to keep it vibrant and alive.

As we celebrate 10 years as a non-profit, I hope you will continue to be thrilled by the dis-coveries and re-discoveries that this great institution provides. Thank you for your support over the past decade and your continued support in the future.

Best wishes,Ned HinkleCreative Director and Co-Founder, Brattle Film Foundation

The Brattle Theatre has played a significant role in the Greater Boston community since 1890 and boasts a rich history as a community center, theater and cinema. 120 years later, the Brat-tle Film Foundation maintains this legacy—inspiring the minds and hearts of us all. The BFF proudly carries out its mission to celebrate film as a popular and fine art form with significant cultural and historical value. We believe that viewing film is both a community and personal experience.

Throughout 2009, our series-based repertory film programs, partnerships with local organi-zations, film festivals and other educational offerings continued to engage the community in new and meaningful ways and inspire others with our love of film.

This past year we:

now serving beer and wine!We have always prided ourselves on our exceptional concessions offerings—it is one of the things that makes going to the Brattle a special experience. One of the chief highlights of 2009 was receiving our beer and wine license. In keeping with our tradi-tion of serving as many regional and local products as possible, we partnered with Cambridge Brewing Company as our ex-clusive beer provider. Addition-ally, our organic and free-trade wines from La Fortuna vineyards come to us through a small, local distributor. This past year we also added new all-natural popcorn toppings, organic chocolate bars and locally produced baked goods!

2009 wasn’t without its chal-lenges. Although our budget was forecast to address the current

economic climate, our business expenses went up due to increas-es in the meals tax rate and credit card purchasing fees. We also had to replace the HVAC unit in our lobby and make other repairs to the theater space. Despite these unforeseen challenges we were able to keep overall expenses down by moving to local and green options for vendors when-ever possible, which not only reduced our environmental impact but saved us over $10,000.

Through thoughtful and creative management we were able to make 2009 another successful year for the Brattle, advancing our mission, growing our programs and partnerships and strengthen-ing our bonds with the community. We look forward to continuing to share the journey with you.
