LIVE MUSIC EVENTS IN CHIRKAugust 23rd saw the start of a new era of entertainment & eventsheld at The Parish Hall, Chirk. It kicked off with an Abba tributeband – ‘Waterloo Live’ where a portion of the proceeds wasdonated to Hope House Children’s Hospice in memory of ayoung resident from Chirk who sadly passed away last year. The evening was a great success with guests travelling from theNorth Wales Coast to see the act! Further events are planned totake place at the hall later this year, starting with Motown Livemusic and disco on Friday 4th October, then we have Ultimate80’s Live music and Disco on Friday 8th November and also aGin Night to be held on hereon Saturday 14th December2019. COMMUNITY AGENTS NEWSTime credits – Time Banking. What is timebanking? It is a way of spending one hourof time helping someone out by,for example, mowing someone’slawn, or doing their shopping, helping out with refreshmentswithin community groups, orsharing your skills within a group.

For every hour spent, you earn an hour’s time credit inreturn. This can be spent on receiving an hour ofsomeone else’s time or, where available, things liketheatre or cinema tickets. You could learn somethingnew or share a skill you have like cooking or playing amusical instrument. Everyone’s time is valued equally;one hour of sharing skills or helping others isrecognised by giving that person one hour as a timecredit – a community loyalty point. This concept wastheorised and popularised by human rights lawyerEdgar Cahn in 1986.Timebanking is not the same as volunteering. It isless formal with people being able to give and receivetime doing things they enjoy, when they want to. It is a2-way process of giving time and receiving time. The Time Credits model works simply: people earnTime Credits for time contributed to their community orservice. These Time Credits can then be spent onaccessing activity across our national network, suchas local attractions, training courses or leisure, orgifted to others.I have signed up to Tempo Time Banking go tohttps://timecredits.com/about for more information, and to https://timecredits.com/spend to find outwhere you can spend your credits.Local spend partners wanted!!!Local businesses are you interested in becoming aSPEND PARTNER? Time Credits are a no-costopportunity to turn your spare capacity into a realadvantage. Attract new and more diverse audiences.Market your brand locally and nationally. Support youto secure new business. Make better use of yourfacilities and generate secondary spend at your venue. You are in total control of what you offer. If interestedplease contact myself or Tempo Time Banking forfurther information.Current local spend partners are:Plas Madoc Leisure Centre, Ty Mawr Country Park,The Odeon Wrexham, Freedom Leisure, TheatreClwyd, The national trust – Erddig and Chirk castle.,Cadw sites, Chester Cathedral, Chester fc. PKC GROUP UPDATEDear All, no pictures this issue, just news. We the PKC Group are now holding monthly meetings in theHolly Bush Inn on the second Tuesday of each month, start time 1900. Next meeting will be 8th ofOctober. Our main issue remains the Economic Regeneration of our community and the preferred route(because of opportunity) is for Sustainable Tourism Development. The opportunity that we have, aresurrounded with, and intersected by could set us up as a Transport Hub and Tourist Destination in our ownright, if the dots were simply joined together in accordance with, Welsh Planning Policy and the FutureGenerations Act 2015.

However, this does not seem to be happening. We offered WCBC twice their asking price for the Ebenezerto save it from going to auction earlier this year. We would like to reopen it as an Arts & Visitor Centre forthe Cefn & Cefn Mawr at the centre of the Pontcysyllte WHS. However, although WCBC withdrew theEbenezer from auction and offered it to us, the terms of sale by WCBC were unacceptable. Since thenWCBC entered closed meetings with CCC, Cefn Community Council which we are not included in. DerekWright has informed us an announcement will be made next month in October regarding CCC plans. Theirony of all this is that the Ebenezer closed in 2013 from the very problem our village centre still struggleswith, a lack of footfall in the middle of an area with one of the highest tourists counts in Wales. With the opening of the new Aldi supermarket at the Ruabon roundabout we will see a further reduction intraffic and retail activity in our villages (all). Local Authorities like to blame internet shopping, but mailorder is nothing new and is well over 100 years old. The truth is, satellite retail parks have been the rootcause of decay for our town centres up and down the country. These retail parks built over the last 50 yearspay councils premium rates which is why we see so many. Then to supposedly help local commerce in towncentres, rates free areas are established, but what incentive does this give the local authorities to look aftertheir local people? This is a bad situation and it is happening here in our community. There is also theever-present possibility that another supermarket opening on the 2-acre site indicated for such on the A539.What chance do our local people and shop keepers stand when the large supermarkets are clubbing it outwith approval from the council?

As you know and simply reading the various issues of the Cefn Community News Letter we have beenconsistently lobbying both CRT, Canal & River Trust and WCBC to include our community in the “TrevorBasin Master Plan” in ways that will work and although they say they have, we have yet to see proof ofthis. Following meetings, we have had with both, their main concern seems to be where to build the newmultimillion-pound visitor centre?

Our main concern are they development areas, and what may happen there. In the 2012 Master Plan a newHotel, Bar and Restaurant was indicated, and we know that a Plas Coch type affair will be opened at theRuabon roundabout. This coupled with further franchise activity at the Trevor Basin will no doubt affect usin the Holly Bush Inn and all other local pubs. Therefore, we would like to invite all local landlords and pubowners to our next meeting in the Holly Bush Inn. We also invite all local businesses and commercialproperty owners to come along and see how we can stand together. We have estimated that between us,under the THI Scheme, we have invested something around £2M from our own funds into our village centre, and now is being written off in favour new development at the Trevor Basin and elsewhere?

We also invite all members of our community who have an interest in providing a better place for theirChildren and Grand Children in accordance with the FGA 2015 and WPP to come along as it says on ourwebsite. We must look forward and at long term positive planning for our community which is the largestcommunity in the WHS, World Heritage Site corridor and struggling with the one of the highestunemployment rates in NE Wales. If you care about your family and community please come along, wewould like to see you.

Regards, David Metcalfe, Cefn Community Councillor & Dee Valley AONB Champion.
