Seasonal Guide2019

Eat Local First is the trusted community brand for identifying truly local food.

Here’s what we know:

• People want to buy local food!

• People need help identifying truly local food: They can identify

locally owned businesses, BUT, they can be skeptical about which

ones are legitimately sourcing local food.

• When going out to eat, people report feeling uncertain about which

items and dishes are locally sourced. Consumers need trustworthy

information communicated clearly, and visibly; they want to be able

to identify on menus, signage, and websites what is locally sourced.

How can EAT LOCAL FIRST help your business reach these customers?

Businesses that proudly display Eat Local First materials make it easy

for customers to both IDENTIFY and TRUST that they are making a

choice to eat truly local food.

• Incorporate the Eat Local First logo on menus, specials boards, shelf

cards, etc., to identify local products.

• Use the Free materials offered to Sustainable Connections members

such as window clings, posters, signage and stickers.

• Use the logo in your own advertising, packaging and marketing

materials. High-resolution digital files are available in multiple

formats to complement your business’ brand.

• Take advantage of the many marketing opportunities through

Sustainable Connections and the Food & Farming Program to

maximize your business’ exposure, while aligning with the values of

the local food seeker.

Contact us for more ways to identify yourself as an Eat Local First business through display materials, logo recognition, media, and more!

We believe in our local producers and our local food businesses.

You both work so hard. We see you! Research shows that the

customer demand for local food is increasing substantially

each year. We want to make it easier for you to find the freshest,

most flavorful products to serve to your customers with pride.

Inside, you will find over 100 local products offered by 70+

local producers. Want to know who grows your favorite herbs,

veggies, fruits and when they will be available? Do you need

help finding the finest locally crafted artisan products? It’s all

in here.

Find local products, and then “put a fork on it”. Tell the story of

local farms and artisans, while connecting with the collective

Eat Local First campaign!

We’re about local food.

We’re about people.

We’re about connecting local food and people.

Compiled with love by your Sustainable Connections’ Food & Farming Program team,

Sara Southerland, Alex Smith, Diana Meeks, & Maressa Valliant

Products: Whole, 2%, 1%, Fat Free Milks. Chocolate and Strawberry milk. Half & half and heavy cream. Eggnog, seasonally.

Farm Description: We are a family dairy that milks Jersey cows and only puts the milk in glass returnable bottles. We have no on-farm retail but to find a list of locations where you can purchase products, go to our website and click on store locations. We strive to be the best possible stewards of the land, raising purebred Jersey cows that produce milk with a higher protein and butterfat content, greatly enhancing the flavor. We use no synthetic hormones (such as RBST) that artificially stimulate growth or milk production, giving us happy, healthy cows and the most natural milk a cow can produce. During the summer months we pasture the “girls” and we also put up our extra fields of grass which we use for the cows feed during the winter months. We do not use commercial fertilizer or pesticides on our grass fields or pastures, so the feeds that they

eat are as close to natural as we can provide them.

Business Description: As second-generation salmon trollers &

artists, Joel & Tele view fishing as an art. Hooking & processing

each salmon one by one, trolling is a beautifully inefficient fishery.

That’s what we love about it. We spend May-September aboard

the 43-foot Nerka, dragging our hooks through the waters of

Southeast Alaska. We alone handle our salmon and we handle

them with reverence. We carry that personal connection beyond

the boat, when, back in Bellingham, we hand-deliver our harvest

to our partner chefs & markets. Our partners share our standards

and values: that’s why they’ve chosen Nerka Sea Frozen Salmon

since 1998. Ours is a sea-to-plate story, and we tell it with love.

Wild, hook & line-caught, frozen-at-sea Alaskan Coho. Bled

immediately upon landing, our salmon are headed, gutted,

catheter-bled, & flash-frozen at -40 degrees within an hour

on deck, before passing into rigor mortis. The result: a “fresher

than fresh” product, quality guaranteed. Contact us for your

compimentary first fish!
