Whole Planet Foundation® (WPF) funds microlending

programs in Kenya where CTC International’s LIFE

Line products are created which are sold in Whole

Foods Market® (WFM) stores. WPF is a WFM non-

profit whose mission is to alleviate poverty by funding

microlending programs where WFM sources products

as a way to alleviate poverty and give back to our

global communities.

Through the WFM Team Member Volunteer Program,

WFM gives Team Members the unique opportunity to

travel abroad with WPF to learn about WPF and meet

microcredit clients, witnessing the transformative

power of microcredit, see where and how WFM

products are grown, provide community service,

experience and learn from other cultures and challenge

themselves by exploring exciting countries around the

globe.

VISION Farmers are the Answer

When farmers improve their harvests, they pull themselves out

of poverty. They also start producing surplus food for their

neighbors. When farmers prosper, they eradicate poverty and

hunger in their communities.

One Acre Fund (OAF) is growing quickly and is proud to soon

represent Africa’s largest network of smallholder farmers. By

2020, we hope to serve one million farm families- with more

than 5 million people living in those families. And our farmers

will produce enough surplus food to feed another million of their

neighbors.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. When millions of farmers

speak with one voice, we can more effectively pursue

collaboration together with the government and the private

sector to broaden our reach.

PROGRAM MODEL A Business for Africa’s Farmers

Within three years, we will represent Africa’s largest network of

smallholder farmers. By listening to farmers, One Acre Fund

has innovated a new solution that significantly increases farm

income on every planted acre. Farmers living in remote places

need support in more than one area. We provide smallholder

farmers with exactly the resources they need to succeed:

1. Farm inputs on credit: We provide an $80 loan in the

form seed and fertilizer.

2. Delivery: We deliver inputs within walking distance of the

people that we serve.

3. Training: We train farmers to use inputs correctly, which

dramatically improves farm profits.

4. Harvest sales: Lastly, we enable farmers to sell their

harvests at a significant profit with improved storage and

market facilitation.

Farming is the dominant activity of the world’s poor. One Acre

Fund makes that activity significantly more productive. We are

growing as fast as possible to capture an incredible opportunity.

Whole Planet Foundation began funding OAF Kenya in

September 2011 with a $500,000 grant disbursed over 3 years.

The goal of the project was to add 13,936 new borrowers over

the course of the project. At the closure of the project in

September 2014, OAF confirmed that they were able to add

16,904 new clients in the Butere and Kakamega districts of

Kenya with WPF funds. During that time, OAF maintained

strong repayment, ranging between 98.5-100% since the

beginning of the WPF partnership.

Information from CTC International:

Mission/Vision/Story

"After living in Kenya my first year in 2000, I started to

recognize that we could not address one area of need

adequately without addressing all areas equally,"

explains founder Zane Wilemon. "Why? Because they're

all connected. Deforestation leads to poor water supply.

Poor water supply leads to economic deficiency.

Economic deficiency leads to lack of healthcare and

education... and the cycle continues."

Through programs in five specific areas--Education,

Environment, Economy, Health and Community—CTC

International (CTC) works to combat the cycle of poverty

by empowering communities to create a new cycle of

positive impact.

Our Mission

We pride ourselves on a holistic approach to community

development. CTC initiatives focus on five areas, all

interrelated: education, environment, economy, health

and community. Each area directly impacts the

community as a whole and each is connected to the

success of the others. All CTC initiatives are managed

by full-time local staff and community volunteers in Maai

Mahiu, Kenya and in our US office in Austin, Texas.

Our Vision

CTC International is a community of people working

diligently to create solutions and opportunities for a

better life in Kenya. Through a cross cultural exchange

of ideas and relationships, we’re developing innovative

solutions to global issues like HIV/AIDS, deforestation,

unemployment, special needs, and education. We strive

to live authentically in the rapidly growing world of

international development in Africa. We do that by

staying committed to our core values of genuine

relationships, holistic development, faith lived in action,

sustainable and scalable solutions, passion,

transparency, having fun and creating collaboratively

with cultural relevance.

For all of us at CTC International, our work is a

reflection of how we live. We live as a community

dedicated to creating positive impact in Kenya.

CTC International

VOLUNTEERS SINCE 2011

Helping the mothers of children with

disabilities is one of CTC’s

initiatives to help people get access

to the opportunity to improve their

lives and the lives of their families in

Maai Mahiu. CTC built a school for

the Malaika children and then

helped the Malaika mums to have

access to a way to earn a living by

getting someone to donate sewing

machines and getting the American

Sewers Guild to come to Kenya to

teach sewing. Now the Malaika

mums sew LIFE Line products

which are sold in WFM stores. They

started with nine women and now

nearly 40 sew.

Team Member Volunteers visited

CTC International’s initiatives and

performed community service work

alongside CTC staff and community

members. They built, dug,

brainstormed, planned, baked,

barbecued, made coffee, celebrated

and danced with members of the

Maai Mahiu community.

Once they return to their own

countries, the volunteers share their

experiences and the initiatives that

they learned about, helping CTC to

spread the word and inspiring

others to help CTC do more work in

the community.

Previous Whole Foods Market

Team Member Volunteers helped

raise the money for and built Cafe

UBUNTU with the people of Maai

Mahu. UBUNTU means “ I am

because we are.” We are all

interconnected and the change that

affects one of us affects us all.

The spirit of UBUNTU is alive and

well in Maai Mahiu with CTC

International and throughout Whole

Foods Market. This year marks the

second anniversary of the opening

of Café UBUNTU, and what started

as a cafe / bakery has turned into a

“farm to table” restaurant. Helping to

build Café UBUNTU has helped to

build relationships that will last a

lifetime.

COMMUNITY TM VOLUNTEERS BUILD

CTC International works alongside community members in

Maai Mahiu Kenya to provide resources that create

sustainable change. Instead of simply giving aid and money to

those in need, they build relationships and programs with the

community that empower residents to help themselves.

CTC’s initiatives focus on education, environment, economy,

health and community development that directly impact the

community as a whole. Their programs are delivered through

local relationships, creating the foundation necessary to make

lasting changes while ensuring that donations of time and

money have a maximum positive effect.

LIFE LINE WHOLE FOODS MARKET SUPPLIER PARTNER

Information from CTC International:

The LIFE Line currently employs nearly 40 mothers

(the Malaika Mums) who were previously unemployed,

ranging in age from 22-55 years old. Nineteen of the

Mums have children with special needs in our Malaika

Kids program, and two of the Mums have physical

disabilities themselves.

They began as nine women, sewing LIFE Bags

(reusable cotton bags) in 2008. In June of 2011, the

Malaika Mums began making LIFE Jackets,

environmentally friendly, reusable coffee sleeves. In

the summer of 2011, Allegro Coffee Company placed

its first order with CTC for 80,000 LIFE Jackets. This

allowed CTC to hire ten additional mums.

The range of products has since grown beyond

expectation, from change purses to beaded bracelets;

LIFE Line has not only increased in its diversity of

product but also in terms of the people and companies

involved in production.

Most significantly, we work with the Maasai Mums, an

incredible group of women living in the Ngong Hills

outside of Nairobi. The Maasai Mums make a steady

income from their cultural gift of beadwork. The

consistent orders mean that the women are no longer

selling charcoal on the side of the road, therefore

reducing back-breaking labor and an environmentally

unfriendly practice. The seeds of long-term effects

have already been sown as they have begun investing

in their children’s education, specifically for their female

children who have significantly lower levels of school

attendance than their male counterparts.

LIFE Line

Page 17: WHOLE FOODS MARKET TEAM MEMBER VOLUNTEER PROGRAM · 2019-04-11 · Whole Planet Foundation began funding OAF Kenya in September 2011 with a $500,000 grant disbursed over 3 years

MAASAI MUMS A great cultural expedition that the Team Members get to

participate in is the visit to the Maasai Mums who make

beautiful traditional African beadwork.

LIFE LINE BRACELETS Making and selling traditional artisanal beadwork gives the mums the opportunity

to make a living from their cultural tradition. Team Members love them and

knowing their origin helps the volunteers understand their value.

GAPA Volunteers met the Grandmothers Against Aids Group

(GAPA), a group that CTC works with to produce the

beaded bracelets sold as part of the LIFE Line.

MALAIKA MUMS Team Members got to see the bags and LIFE jacket

coffee sleeves being made by the Malaika Mums that

are sold in WFM stores.

LIFE LINE The joy with which Team Members and the Mums treated each other is beautiful. LIFE Line is a great example of organizations (CTC, WFM

and Allegro) working together to provide opportunity for income generation, much in the same way that WFM and WPF work with

microfinanace institutions, like One Acre Fund, to do the same.

“This was a great experience for me in many levels. First, the team I was

part of was amazing. We clicked immediately and actually had a strong

bond. We worked hard, worked as a team and laughed as a team. This trip

work and it was great to get a deeper understanding of the impact.

Incredible experience. Thank you very much !!!!”

ANGIE

LAURA

“What a difference CTC is making in the

community... from the mums to the

children, education, environment, waste,

healthcare, they seem to be able to do so

much with so little. One Acre was also

incredible and it was great to see a micro-

credit client that has truly succeeded and it

has spread so far and done so much

good. This experience was a blessing. I

couldn't have imagined the impact it would

make or the amount we would accomplish

in such a short period of time. Thank you!”

“Very educational trip as we saw where our funds are invested. The time in

Kenya was very well organized and we were very hands on with everything

we did. Very enlightening and rewarding. I have recommended to all TMs I

have met to participate in the volunteer program if they are able to do so.”

JUAN

TIFFANY

“I was a part of a wonderful great with

positive attitudes and eager energy to

help out. Rubie Ruth and CTC were

wonderful hosts and helped us to

understand and respect the Kenyan

culture. I felt like I learned a lot about One

Acre Fund. My favorite part was the

home visit with the Mums. It was nice to

hear their stories first hand!"

ANTHONY

MIKE

“Overall amazing trip filled with great

people and chances to help make a

difference.”CHRISTINA

“My trip to Kenya was an amazing experience that has impacted my life

on so many levels. I automatically connected with everyone that I met

and felt I had gained a new family by the time I flew back home. I am

grateful for every place we traveled to and the people we met. To meet

the GAPA Grandmothers and listen to their stories of overcoming life's

hardships and persevering to make a difference was truly inspiring. It

was an honor to meet all the mums and listen to where they came from,

and where they are now. The Malaika Kids was another program

that beautiful the human spirit is and that everyone can excel when given

the opportunity.”
