WHAT WE OFFERWHO WE ARE
Collegium Medicum is the only public
medical university in the Kuyavian-
Pomeranian Region, offering a wide
variety of programmes provided by
three faculties: Medicine, Pharmacy
and Health Sciences. It is the youngest
and the smallest school of its type in
Poland, which constitutes its major
advantage – our philosophy rests on
an individual-focused approach to
teaching and a constant development
of the student-teacher partnership.
WHAT WE OFFER
Our school offers a rich variety
of programmes in the areas of
medicine, pharmacy and health
sciences. Currently, we provide
education in Polish in 18 fields of
study: audiophonology, biomedical
engineering, biotechnology,
cosmetology, dispensing optics and
optometry, elder care management,
electroradiology, emergency medical
science, laboratory medicine,

WHERE WE ARE
Bydgoszcz is the 8th largest city in
Poland and the capital of the Kuyavian-
Pomeranian Region. It has over 350
thousand inhabitants, about 10% of
whom are students. The city has a lot
to offer to both residents and visitors,
whose mobility is facilitated by an
airport located just 2 miles from
the city centre and a well-developed
public transport system.
If you’re hooked on sports, there are
over 150 sports facilities you can visit.
These include: Łuczniczka
– one of the most modern sports and
entertainment halls in Europe,
Zawisza Sports Complex – with an
athletics and football stadium,
or Polonia Stadium – now mainly
a speedway track.
Bydgoszcz boasts its green spaces.
Myślęcinek – the Forest Park of
Culture and Recreation – is one of the
largest recreation areas in Poland.
Wyspa Młyńska – also called the Little
Venice – is one of the most enchanting
and picturesque places in the city.
Located on the bank of the Brda River
and ringed by renovated historical
buildings and granaries, it hosts
numerous festivals, concerts and fairs.
Legend has it that the name of the city
of Bydgoszcz derives from the phrase
“be our guest”. Thus, the open gates
in the city’s coat of arms symbolise
hospitality and a warm welcome of its
inhabitants.
A BIT OF OUR HISTORY OUR PATRON
Our school was established in 1984
as the Ludwik Rydygier Medical
University. It began its functioning
with the Faculty of Medicine, whose
educational offer covered a full range
of medical specialties. In the same year,
the Faculty of Pharmacy was created,
launching the programme of laboratory
medicine, and then pharmacy and
cosmetology. It was followed by the
Faculty of Nursing, changed a few
years later into the Faculty of Health
Sciences due to the growing number
of diverse medical and health-related
programmes added to its offer. In 2004,
the school joined forces with one of
the most prestigious multi-profile
universities in Poland – the Nicolaus
Copernicus University in Toruń
– and was renamed into Collegium
Medicum.
Ludwik Rydygier (1850-1920) was
a Polish doctor, surgeon, professor
of medicine and a brigadier-general
of the Polish Army. He was one of
the most significant contributors to
gastrointestinal surgery and a keen
supporter of the latest achievements
in medicine. A prolific scientist, he
introduced novel surgical techniques
in such fields as orthopaedics,
gynaecology and urology, and was the
author of about 200 scientific papers.
THE CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION
The didactic buildings of our school
are located in various parts of the
beautiful city of Bydgoszcz.
Most of them are grouped into two
major campuses situated in the
heart of the city.
Classes are held in both historical
buildings of classical architecture as
well as more modern, stylish facilities.
There are plenty of options to find
your lodging in Bydgoszcz. Our school
offers single, 2-, 3- and 4-person rooms
in three conveniently located and
disabled-friendly student houses.
Apart from standard room equipment,
we provide free Internet access,
kitchen facilities, recreation rooms
and quiet study areas. There is
also a wide selection of rooms and
apartments offered for rent by private
landlords.
Student’s House No. 3 is one of the
most modern and stylish student
dormitories in Poland. The facility
houses 180 elegant rooms with
standard equipment, en suite
bathrooms, and fully-fitted kitchens
for each pair of rooms.
CLINICAL EDUCATIONACCOMMODATION
Practical classes and clinical
placements are an essential element
of medical education. Our students
enjoy a broad access to hospitals,
clinics, laboratories and other
health-related institutions, offering
them the possibility to acquire
professional knowledge and skills
from practitioners working in different
areas of medical, pharmaceutical
and health sciences.
There are two university hospitals
in Bydgoszcz functioning as the
institutional infrastructure for
education, scientific research and
highly specialised diagnostic, medical
and rehabilitation services. The
organisational units of Collegium
Medicum also collaborate with many
other hospitals and clinics in the region.
The University Hospital No. 1 in
Bydgoszcz is the region’s largest
highly specialist medical facility
of interregional significance. Its
emergency department, fully
computerised and supplied with state-
of-the-art medical equipment, is one of
the most modern ER units in Poland.
The University Hospital No. 2 in
Bydgoszcz is one of the largest
multidisciplinary medical facilities
in the region. The hospital works
in collaboration with foreign
establishments, engaging in joint tasks
related to scientific research and
academic teaching.
The Centre for Medical Simulation was
established with the aim of enhancing
the quality and effectiveness of medical
education provided to Collegium
Medicum students, which is in accord
with the University’s strategy for
development as a modern teaching
centre. The facility is designed to help
enrich the process of medical teaching
through simulation-based courses,
extracurricular classes, Objective
Structured Clinical Examination
CENTRE FOR MEDICAL SIMULATION
(OSCE) sessions, teaching staff training,
as well as courses and internships for
medical simulation instructors.
Simulated medical environment
provides students with access to rare
and uncommon clinical cases and
allows them to practice their skills as
often as necessary in order to avoid
medical malpractice and optimise
clinical treatment results.
CENTRE FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION IN ENGLISH
Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz has
been providing education in English
since 2009, when the 6-year Medical
Programme in English was launched
with a group of future doctors from
Scandinavian countries.
The university has enriched its
English-taught offer by such
programmes as nursing, physiotherapy
and laboratory medicine, and is
currently providing education to
students from such countries as
Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Denmark,
UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, USA, Canada,
Brazil, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia,
India, Thailand, Ethiopia, Pakistan,
Afghanistan, and Poland.
Higher education received outside of
their home country provides students
with a unique opportunity for an
intercultural exchange of viewpoints,
experiences and traditions. Studying
in a multicultural environment is
undoubtedly an enriching and inspiring
experience.
INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION
Our school actively participates in
the Erasmus+ student exchange
programme. We have signed
agreements for over 100 places for
exchange students with nearly 50
higher education institutions from
such countries as Belgium, Spain,
Portugal, France, Greece, Germany,
Italy, Finland, Slovakia or Turkey.
We therefore provide our students
with the opportunity to change their
surroundings for a period of three to
ten months and enjoy the Erasmus+
experience. Collegium Medicum also
participates in many research and
development projects funded by
national and international bodies, such
as the National Centre for Research
and Development, the European
Commission, and the Regional Operational
Programme for the Kuyavian-Pomeranian
Voivodeship.
MEDICAL LIBRARY
The Collegium Medicum Medical
Library was established in 1984. It
is fully computerised and makes use
of the Horizon library system and
an advanced multi-search tool. Its
collection comprises about 100,000
volumes of books and journals in
print. The library provides access to
bibliographic and full-text databases,

RESEARCH ACTIVITY
Departments and units functioning
within Collegium Medicum support
our academic staff and students in
their scholarly investigations. Many
research proposals developed by our
scientists provide them with grants
awarded by the Polish Ministry of
Science and Higher Education and the
National Science Centre. The obtained
funds allow our academics not only
to purchase specialist equipment and
carry out highly advanced research
studies, but also to achieve scientific
development and gain valuable
experience. Our scientists present their
research results at numerous national
and international conferences and
symposia. The conventions and joint
research projects pursued in association
with foreign partners result in
cooperative scholarly papers published
in high-ranking international journals
indexed in the ISI Master Journal List.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY
If you wish to broaden your medical
horizons and go beyond the
curriculum, there is a wide array of
options for you to choose from. The
Student Scientific Society welcomes
anyone interested to join our active
Student Clubs devoted to diverse
areas of medicine, pharmacy and
health sciences. If that is not enough,
you can also become a member of
the Laboratory Medicine Student
Association, the Polish Pharmaceutical
Students’ Association, the Academic
Society for Emergency Medicine, the
Polish branch of the International
Federation of Medical Students’
Associations, or the Collegium
Medicum Choir. Writing academic
papers, participating in national and
international conferences, attending
trainings and educational events
– these and other activities will help
you spread your wings.
Sports also play a significant role in
the lives of many of our students.
The Academic Sports Association is a
dynamically functioning organisation
offering a wide range of sections to
join. The club organises summer and
winter sports camps and takes part in
numerous national championships and
tournaments.
SOCIAL & COMMUNITY LIFE
There are over a dozen universities and
colleges in Bydgoszcz, which makes
students a substantial percentage of
the city’s population. Pubs and clubs,
cafés and restaurants, galleries and
museums, parks, stadiums, cinemas and
theatres, an opera and a philharmonic –
there are so many alternatives that you
will never have to wonder how to spend
your leisure time. Let us not forget
about events organised by our Student
Government – orientation parties, lab
coat parties, sportsmen’s parties, grill
parties, Halloween parties, after-exam
parties… you name it!
Many of our future doctors, nurses,
physiotherapists, lab technicians and
other medical specialists serve our
local community by organising health
awareness campaigns, blood and bone
marrow donor events, first aid courses,
or open lectures and workshops
for children and adults. Collegium
Medicum also actively participates in
major science festivals organised in
our region with the aim of combining
education and entertainment.
