Who We Are

About the Ontario Appaloosa Horse Club

The Ontario Appaloosa Horse Association Inc. is an organization of horse enthusiasts and owners

dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the Appaloosa Horse in Ontario.

Our club is an international affiliate of the Appaloosa Horse Association, which is the only recognized

worldwide Appaloosa Breed Registry.

We are the oldest Appaloosa horse club in Ontario. The club became incorporated in 1978 but was in

existence prior but not incorporated.

Our membership is Ontario wide, and our organization carries on various activities throughout the

year, showing our Appaloosa's being the primary focus.

We appreciate your support of our club in our endeavour to provide activities and events for our Open,

Amateur and Youth exhibitors. With your help, our membership can grow and we can enjoy these types

of activities throughout the years.

You can feel the excitement in the air. Banners are hung in the arena. Vendors are set up. It’s show time for the 67th Appaloosa National and Youth World Show being held at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

Judges this year include Jennifer Baker, Shannon Baker, Mario Boisjoli, Clay Cavinder, Lori Gordon, Kevin Hood, Rick McLain, Todd Bailey, Charlene Carter, Mike Carter, Jan Dublin, Kennis Fairfax, Jim Isley, Sue Kapushion, Kathy Kilbane, Kathryn Kope and Cynthia Mergaert.

The Appaloosa National Show is the oldest single breed horse show in the country. People travel from as far west as California and from the East Coast to show at the Appaloosa National and Youth World Show. Two weeks of horse showing, spending time with family and friends, all in the heart of Texas: What more could a cowboy or cowgirl want?

It’s a jammed packed schedule from start to finish but the Appaloosa Horse Club knows how to keep the FUN going so throughout the two weeks of competition there are activities like an egg toss and dog races scheduled in which all exhibitors can participate. The show staff goes above and beyond to make sure all exhibitors are taken care of at all times and no matter when you walk in the office (day or night) someone always greets you with a smile and a “how can I help you?”

On Sunday night June, 22 the year end awards banquet was held at the Cowgirl Hall of Fame Museum kicking the show off. It was a chance for all exhibitors to sit down, have a nice dinner and visit with friends before everyone started showing. Bringing home the big award was Lonnie Cruse of Santa Fe, Texas for Trainer of the Year. It is a very prestigious award in which trainers are nominated by their peers for exhibiting good sportsmanship, horsemanship, a friendly attitude and for promoting the Appaloosa breed.

Monday morning bright and early the show started with a bang and bringing home the first 2014 Appaloosa National trophy in a Western Pleasure class was Chris Filippelli and his mare Laced By Chocolate in the 35 & Over Western pleasure. This is Filippelli’s first National title with Laced By Chocolate (aka Smokey), a 3-year-old mare by Chocolatey. Filippelli purchased Smokey a couple months ago from Danny Desmond and says he can’t wait to see what the future has in store for this young talented mare. Filippelli and Smokey will also compete in the Masters Western Pleasure on Thursday.

Western Pleasure, Western Riding, Hunter Under Saddle and Hunter Hack are on the schedule for today. Check back daily for results and updates on the 2014

The 60 cc Syringe The 60cc syringe is a valuable addition to your foaling kit. It has a multitude of uses, and not just for the syringe itself but also the casing around the outside. The obvious use of the syringe is to use it to syringe colostrum to a new foal who has not nursed from his Mom yet. Care should be taken not to syringe colostrum too quickly as the foal might aspirate it, in particular to a weak or dummy foal who may not have a strong suckle reflex. However, I have seen foals that will literally suck on the syringe so hard that the plunger moves on its own! You can also fashion a manual “milk pump” from a 60 cc syringe that you can use to milk your mare. First, remove the plunger from the syringe barrel. Take a hacksaw or sharp knife and carefully cut across the barrel at the tip end of the syringe. This will leave a very rough edge at that end of the syringe. Take the plunger and insert it back through the rough cut end, so that the rubber plunger ends up at the end that is smooth and has the finger grips. This is your milk pump! To use, manually use your fingers to milk some milk from the nipple, and rub it around the nipple so it is wet and you can get a good seal. Now – and watch your head if your mare kicks – place the smooth end of your syringe pump up g around the nipple and push firmly against the mare’s udder. Draw back firmly on the plunger, and milk should be drawn easily into the syringe barrel. Be careful not to draw down too far, or you will lose all your precious milk. You can then dump it carefully into a clean container. Collected colostrum and milk can either be used right away, refrigerated for 24 hours, or can be frozen for future use up to one year. The syringe casing from the 60cc syringe is the perfect size and shape for dipping umbilical stumps with a lot less mess. The most commonly used product these days is diluted chlorhexidine, or Nolvasan solution. It is important to make sure that you use solution and NOT scrub, which contains soap that may be very irritating to the foal’s skin and umbilicus. Some people still use diluted iodine, which is also acceptable. Fill the syringe case about two-thirds full with your choice of umbilical stump disinfectant and place the end of the umbilical stump into the mouth of the syringe case, and push firmly upward against the foal’s belly to form a good seal, and shake the syringe case back and forth for 10 to 15 seconds if you can. This makes sure that the disinfectant completely coats the umbilical stump, and gets into all the cracks and crevices. The used disinfectant solution should be immediately discarded, and the syringe case should be rinsed out well before being used again.
