Why We GiveWe believe in the healing power of joy and fun. Why I GiveI give because I know there is no place that can provide the transformational and impactful experience that camp does. I’ve seen what camp means to campers and families and there’s no better feel-ing than knowing you were a part of it. —pete aubry, fhf camp admissions coordinator

Q: So many people are touched by illness in some way. What inspired you to join camp’s mission?

A: Well, we are no different. The mission of Flying Horse Farms was presented to us at a time when we had just experienced the loss of my brother after a long battle with an autoimmune disease. So much of my pain came from watching him try to be “normal” while he was sick—try-ing to fit in, not wanting to stand out, hiding some of his symptoms as well as the side effects from his medi-cations, the feelings of isolation, etc. This was a place he would have loved and thrived in; it would have benefited him tremendously to be with other people in his situation, shar-ing experiences and emotions. The idea of Flying Horse Farms seemed like Divine Intervention.

Q: Why is it important for you to be part of this mission?

A: As a parent, the idea of providing a carefree and fun childhood is central to your role—in other words, providing a “typical” childhood.

Facing the fact that your child will be lim-ited in what they can do because of an ill-ness or condition—and that they will therefore be missing out on normal experiences most people take for granted—can be very overwhelming and soul-crushing. For us, Flying Horse Farms is a solution not only for children but also for the parents, too. Knowing your child is some-where having the time of their life, being cared for by the best doctors in their field, making new friends, getting dirty, trying new things and finding comfort with others in similar situations is priceless. It is a cornerstone for navigating that difficult path. I call it “healing and dealing.”

Q: How do you hope your gift is changing lives?

A: In Judaism, Tikkun Olam is a fundamental concept. Tikkun Olam is Hebrew for “heal the world.” If we are able to ease the burden for just one child and his or her family by providing the magic of camp, we have helped heal a small portion of someone’s world.
