Who are we?

What do we do?

Why do we do it?

Established in 2009 by Andrew Cohen and Jeremy Levitt, Parts and Labor Design is a full service design firm specializing in hospitality, commercial and retail experiences. Internationally recognized, PLD is highly sought after for their award winning designs and an undeniable commitment to their clients. A relentless pursuit of relevant and timeless design is at the very core of what defines us.

Andrew and Jeremy sought out to start a company whose foundation is built upon their relationships with fellow designers, fabricators and most importantly their clients. PLD’s innovative approach pushes the boundaries and the ultimate goal has always been a shared sense of values and vision, and that each product embodies integrity, originality and a love of design.

PLD offers a bespoke, bare-knuckled and integrated approach to design with a focus on unique and highly customized interiors, furniture and lighting. Collectively we combine our talents and expertise and consider every element and every detail in order to create a holistic design and a tailored experience that aligns with ethos of our brand partners.

Our Story

4

We believe in creating meaningful and memorable experiences through design that balances both the emotional and the practical.

Our approach

The Practical The Emotional

With integrated design thinking at the core of everything we do, we prioritize intelligent programming to establish key opportunities for unique design, intuitive guest experience, seamless operations and full brand immersion.

Thinking ahead, our designs always aim to be future proof, considering the functionality, longevity and timelessness of each element in development of the overall aesthetic. Both technological and social connectivity are key in allowing for an integrated design approach that aligns with guest experience, and addresses the needs and values of the individual as well as the collective.

Today, there has been a recent shift towards the intangible, whereby the experience, the emotional connections and feelings have become the most valuable assets of the brand. Our designs hope to facilitate these responses. Each element within the space offers something unique and unexpected, building curiosity and engagement throughout the journey.

Thoughtful and considered details surprise and delight, materiality activates the senses and the overall aesthetic ties into the brand’s values and behaviors. Each component creates and adds to the overall story, building long-lasting and memorable relationships between the guest, the space and ultimately the brand.

Andrew Cohen was born in Smithtown, New York. He attended Cornell University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Labor Relations, with steady diversions in the fine arts. Upon graduating, he found refuge at the Education Alliance welding studios and the School of Visual Arts, while employed with Sony Pictures.

Yielding to his lifelong interest in design and fabrication, he then attended the University of Toronto, School of Architecture, Landscape + Design, receiving a Masters in Architecture. Andrew returned to New York and joined the offices of award-winning hospitality design firm AvroKO, leading hospitality projects from New York to Shanghai, in addition to their self-propelled projects. In 2009, he started Parts and Labor Design, with friend and fellow AvroKO alum, Jeremy Levitt.

Jeremy Levitt was born in Detroit, Michigan where he developed his fascination with fine arts, functional objects and fine craftsmanship. After graduating from the College for Creative Studies with a BFA in industrial design and crafts, he relocated to New York City in 2003 working for such names as Gaetano Pesce, Donghia and AvroKO Design, as Furniture and Lighting Director.

Entrepreneurship was a firm direction for Jeremy, which resulted in the creation of Parts and Labor Design. With modest beginnings as a two-person operation, PLD has quickly grown to become an award winning design firm with close to twenty employees, and counting. Jeremy and Andrew are currently diversifying their core in developing a bespoke furniture and lighting line, and also focusing on equity participation in PLD designed projects.

Our Process

Our Process

ConceptDevelopment

01

PLD will establish a thorough understanding of the brand, the market context and needs of the target audience in order to define a clear and considered design direction. PLD will explore many ideas about the overall experience and design of the space, and establish a shared vision for the project through initial programming exploration and inspirational imagery.

Construction Administration

05

During the construction process PLD will work alongside and support owner’s consultants and contractors. Our primary role will be to review progress of the build for both quality control and maintaining overall design intent. Our dedicated involvement during construction is integral to the success of the project.

DesignDevelopment

03

PLD will begin formal documentation in development of scale plans, elevations, details, specs and schedules. This will include critical interior details that are integral to the design intent of the project. The set of deliverables may be used for preliminary pricing in coordination with client’s consultants.

SchematicDevelopment

02

This is where the shared vision comes to life in establishing a true design.PLD will translate the conceptual inspirations to reality using 3D modeling and photo-realistic rendering. Critical client feedback and initial consultant coordination efforts are key in establishing final arrangements of programmatic elements.

ConstructionDocumentation

04

PLD will finalize all documentation of scale plans, elevations, details, specs and schedules. This will include critical interior details that are integral to the design intent of the project, as well as millwork details for all built-in elements. The set of deliverables will be used for final bid and construction of the project.

For Nashville’s first true lifestyle hotel, PLD was tapped to conceptualize a design that celebrates the city’s creative spirit while also embracing a modern experience. The hotel embodies a young and culturally-driven aesthetic that is both upscale and effortless. Marsh House, located on the ground floor, combines old south elegance with new south creativity to provide locals and tourists a dining experience emblematic of Nashville’s historic and newly developed Gulch neighborhood. A layered design approach, mixed textures and custom furniture and lighting create a dynamic experience heavily influenced by the Southern Seafood-centric menu.

The Evelyn Hotel: Lobby, Benno Restaurant & Leonelli

The design of the public spaces was inspired by the building’s existing Art Deco architecture, with nods to the jazz era. PLD was responsible for the design of all public areas including a three meal restaurant, one fine dining venue, a cafe, bakery and Assouline retail lounge. PLD set out to create unified spaces across two floors that complement the rest of the hotel while also providing a unique experiential atmosphere for guests and locals alike.

Pacific StandardTime

Pacific Standard Time is a coastal California-inspired eatery in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. The concept transports a residential West Coast vibe to the Windy City. With a focus on highlighting the menu and market-driven fresh ingredients, the design connects the guest with the food preparation by bringing them as far into the kitchen as possible. The idea of the domestic chefs table and the intimacy of food preparation is at the heart of this project.

PLD worked alongside John O. Morsiano and chef Mashama Bailey to restore a dilapidated historic Greyhound bus terminal that had been abandoned for 12 years. The exisitng footprint determined the layout of the restaurant while its history and previous function inspired the design elements throughout. The old diner became the magical little bar at the front, with the counter now at bar-, rather than lunch-counter, height. The main space—the waiting hall—became the dining room. The space that feels trendy but timeless, gesturing toward the past while creating something truly original.

As part of the Kimpton La Peer Hotel, PLD created a 140-seat restaurant offering indoor and outdoor dining. The design evokes the daytime luxury of Hollywood paired with a Meditterranean ambiance that permeates the upscale space and mirrors the restaurant’s Positano roots. A custom host stand crafted from a mosaic of mirror and wood welcomes visitors while the adjacent bar is appointed with prismatic shelving and brass detailing reminiscent of Art Deco jewelry. Custom lighting throughout allows the restaurant to transition seamlessly from day to night making it a true all day destination.

Relevant Projects

Client: KHP Capital Partners Contact: Dane Patunoff - [email protected]: Chicago, ILYear: 2017Category: RestaurantRole: Interior Design

The goal for Steadfast was to create a design that offers a fresh perspective on the building’s historic, classical revival architecture while also celebrating the culinary spirit of the menu - new American with a Mediterranean and Portugese twist. Each layer and design detail within the space seamlessly weaves old functions with new to preserve the building’s original structure. Integrating custom-built components with original elements, the opulent space includes separated dining areas each boasting its own vibe. The richness of the space comes through in the layering of materials, both in varying textures and in color palette. Custom lighting, furniture and interior detailing complement the overall aesthetic as well as the building’s history.
