We should perhaps be calling it the Oyster Festival issue - with the latest, updated Oyster Festival Events listed

in full and Day in the Life of WOFA secretary David Roberts... but despite growing excitement about this impending treat, that’s not all we have for you this month...

Chris West, our Town Co-ordinator, launches the WHIT card this month - a scheme whereby local businesses sign up to give card holders (that’s you, the Whitstable local) discounts and incentives to shop with them. More details on page 8.

We also have an amazing competition prize for one lucky local - sell your house for FREE with Century 21, newly-opened in Tankerton High Street. Yes, one lucky reader and Whitstable resident will be able to sell their house through Century 21 and pay NO ESTATE AGENCY COMMISSION! Terms apply, see page 14 for details.

And as if that weren’t enough, there’s also the usual array of local interest bits and bobs, music and film reviews, gig guide and what’s on.

Last month we inadvertently left out details for entering our Reader Offers, so we’re having a roll-over - see page 39 for details.

Enjoy this issue, your WHIT card, the Oyster Festival - and everything else that’s happening in the town over the next month or so - and we’ll be back again in August.

If you need to contact us in the meantime, email [email protected] or write to: The Whitstable IMP, PO Box 290, Whitstable CT5 9AH.

When he finished his last commute,

he started looking for ways to get

involved in the community that had

previously only been available to him at the

weekends. In January, he joined the volunteer

committee for the festival (WOFA) and, with

just weeks to go until the festival which is the

highlight of Whitstable’s year, made time to tell

Liz Crudgington about his typical day.

Morning is when the sun shines for David

Roberts, and a look at his schedule makes it

easy to understand why he is not a late riser.

As well as secretary to the Whitstable Oyster

Festival Association, he is also a committed

family man and gardener and, if the weather is

good, you’ll find him on his allotment first thing.

But vegetables and herbs are not the only

thing growing under his care - David is also

tending the seeds of events, sown months ago,

that will flower during the festival. So after making

sure all the edible plants are fed, watered and

picked if necessary, his attention turns to tying up

loose ends for the community celebrations.

His first festival-related job of the morning

is continuing with the restoration of a handcart

for the opening parade. A cabinetmaker by

trade, David is transforming the wooden

theimp

cart so it can lead the parade in place of the

Faversham-based horse and dray. “I think

the cart is a positive step,” he said. “The

Sea Scouts are going to pull it and it is more

traditional. Oysters would never have been

transported on a horse and dray so this is

more in keeping with the festival and the

heritage of Whitstable.”

That won’t be the only change this year,

as the festival moves towards becoming

wholly organised by the community. The

volunteers still work closely with co-ordinator

Mair Stratton but David and his colleagues are

arranging much more themselves and taking

on more responsibility. He said: “If I take on

something, I’ll do it. I would never give half

measures and I think everyone is the same.

We are all proud to be involved - although it

does seem to creep up on you. In January

it seemed such a long way away and I can’t

believe it’s almost here.”

After a quick trip home to refuel with

some lunch, David is off out again, this time

delivering festival programmes to the many

businesses who have signed up as friends.

Each pays a small amount to be included

in the programme and on the website and,

in return, visitors are directed to their shops

to pick up details of what’s on when. “We

want to make people more socially-spirited

but there is a mixed response,” said David,

who ran his own furniture installation and

removal business. “It is great when they want

to be involved but even if they can’t afford to

spend money they are always interested in

the festival. There is a lot of enthusiasm for it

among businesses because it brings lots of

people in to spend money in the shops.”

However the festival is also aimed at locals, with

more events taking place during the week this year

than ever before. “We want to get as many people

taking part in the festival as possible,” said David.

“It really helps that I have lived in Whitstable all my

life because I have lots of relatives and friends I can

call on to help out. But one of the best things about

the committee is that we are a real cross-section of

Whitstable so we each have our own contacts and

our own interests which helps make the festival as

inclusive as possible.”

One of David’s key events this year is the

Sea Sunday service and parade, and he stops

off at the harbour to make sure everything is in

place. “We have lots of different groups taking

part this year and it’s fantastic to be able to

give them the opportunity to perform,” he said.

“These days there is so much commercialism

and everything has to be spot on but I think

part of the appeal of a community festival is

making sure everyone who wants to can take

part. The Wests from West Whelks will be telling

stories, children from St Mary’s school will be

performing and I think it will be a lovely day.”

Each event has to be risk-assessed which

causes headaches for some, but David is

used to paperwork so completes the forms

in no time. As dusk falls, he pops back to the

allotment for a final watering session before

setting off home for dinner with his family.

“God knows how I managed to work for a

living,” he said. “I can’t fit everything in as it is

and I can’t imagine trying to find time to work

as well! But I like to be doing something and I

hope people will appreciate it when they enjoy

this year’s festival.”

It could not be easier to use, simply present your card when paying at participating retailers in Whitstable to

receive your exclusive discount. It’s as easy as that - no forms to fill out, no coupons to cut out, no points to collect - simply show your WHIT Card and start saving.

Coastal Town Management, part of Canterbury City Council, wrote to local businesses last month inviting them to participate in a scheme to encourage both the local community and tourists to shop in Whitstable.

A similar scheme, the BAY card, was launched in Herne Bay in February and currently boasts over 140 participating local businesses, enabling shoppers to make big savings.

The WHIT card will be accepted in Herne Bay as well, giving Whitstable locals the same discounts as BAY card holders - and vice versa, attracting BAY card holders into Whitstable to shop.

There’s not a phone or games console

in sight as more than 100 youngsters

aged from six to 11 regularly take part

in organised training sessions and matches.

A team of professionally-qualified

volunteer coaches share their knowledge of

bowling, batting and everything in between -

but fun is most definitely the focus.

The Saturday sessions, which are

intended to introduce youngsters to the

game, started with just a few dozen players

but now more than 250 are on the books and

more than 100 turn up most weeks. Colts

director Steve Holness said: “We thought

theimp

we were doing well with about 30 children

playing, but when we opened the season

in May 2004 and more than 120 turned

up, the coaches just looked at each other

open-mouthed. It’s grown since then and

it’s fantastic to see so many young people

enjoying sport in the fresh air.”

It’s not just the youngsters who enjoy the

sessions - a group of parents volunteered to

serve refreshments, and the club has now

become something of a community centre at

coaching times. Steve said: “Parents used to

ask when we would be finished and said they

would pop into town for a coffee and then

come back. We realised we were missing a

trick there and now we serve bacon rolls and

drinks, and everyone stays. It has become a

whole-community event and that just adds to

the welcoming and friendly feel.”

As well as fun drills and mini matches, the

youngsters have the chance to join teams

and take part in tournaments. They are often

inspired by older players who come along to

lend their expertise and England player and

Kent opener Joe Denley, who started his career

at Whitstable, is a regular visitor. The coaches

hope that, by having fun while learning the

cricket basics, their young charges will

continue with the club as they grow.

Steve said: “We worry if they don’t come

back after their first session but that rarely

happens. Instead, they tend to stay with us

until they move up through the club and it’s

great to see them progressing. They make

friends and meet friends, and get to have fun

as well. What could be better than that?”

The Saturday Colts sessions start at

9.15am and cost just £1 per child, including a

drink. Children have to register before taking

part - for more information visit http://www.

whitstablecc.tripod.com or visit the Belmont

Road ground on Saturday mornings.

BUBBLE BITS AND BOBSPlans to install a seating and performance area in Whitstable harbour are going ahead, despite

concerns by councillors. The project, led by the Whitstable

Improvement Trust and termed Deadman’s Corner,

includes a wall filled with rubble and a decked seating

area. Officials have now applied for funding to meet most

of the £100,000 cost and will find out in September if

they have been successful.

The scheme has won approval from the harbour’s

management board, the committee made up of Whitstable

councillors, and the council’s ruling executive group. Some

members did express concerns that the harbour was

primarily a working port, not a resort, and money should be

spent on repairs rather than tourist attractions. But harbour

bosses said it would rejuvenate a neglected area and bring

more people in to the area.

A Whitstable poet has launched a website to showcase work by amateur writers across Kent. Kentquills.co.uk is a collection of poetry, short creative prose and even song lyrics by people

who write for fun and the love of it and want to share their words. Editor Maria Griffiths said: “The writers are

all very different, from different backgrounds and ages. They all have unique voices and styles expressing their

individual take on life, humour, preoccupations and recurring themes. Their style of writing is as varied as their

personalities but what the contributors to this web site all share is a love of writing.” Some of the work includes

swear words or explicit content so the site is only suitable for adults.

The Harrow Choral Society are in Whitstable on Saturday July 11, performing at a special

concert, with all proceeds going to Whitstable Lifeboats. Usually performing in and around North London, each

summer the choir has an ‘away-day’ and this year they visit Whitstable, of which many choir members have

fond childhood memories. Rev Rachel Webbley at St Alphege was extremely welcoming and supportive, and

very kindly said they could perform in the Church.

The classical choir sings a a range of music spanning 5 centuries, but have chosen a lighter programme

for the summer, and the programme for Whitstable will be both familiar and enjoyable. Entitled ‘Operas and

Musicals’, the programme brings together well-known opera choruses and excerpts from musicals including

West Side Story, My Fair Lady and Les Miserables. Alison Henson Jones and Ian Cale will be the soloists.

Starting at 7.30pm, admission is free, and there’ll be a glass of wine available at half time, with a retiring

collection in aid of Whitstable RNLI - and the choir will also be making a separate contribution. It sounds like a

lively and enjoyable evening, which will be made even better by a good-sized audience. Details in the Gig Guide,

from p37 or on the choir’s website – www.harrowchoral.org.uk.

Whitstable residents can now have fresh, local produce delivered to the door, or to a pick-up point in town every week. Nethergong Nurseries is run by the

Jenkins family from Upstreet (eight miles from Canterbury). They recently launched a local Vegetable Box

Scheme in the Whitstable area, using produce either home-grown or sourced from farms in East Kent, and can

deliver the freshest, local vegetables and other food, all grown, baked, or raised within 10 miles of their nursery.

Based on a smallholding and nursery at Nethergong, the idea grew from the tomatoes the family grew in

the back garden over the past few summers. They said: “They tasted so much better than anything we had

bought from the shops so it got us thinking that there must be a market for fresh, local produce. The idea was

born. With its abundance of natural resources East Kent has been described as the new Gastronomic Hot Spot in

England. Elizabeth Carter, the editor of ‘The Good Food Guide’, said: “A rough triangle encompassing Canterbury,

Whitstable and Faversham in east Kent has lured quality chefs, who appear to be drawn to the high quality

Kentish produce.” There you have it, our produce really is the tastiest and freshest out there!”

They can also provide meat boxes and supply a number of Pubs and Restaurants in the area. If you are

interested in signing up to the vegetable box scheme, and at the same time helping to support the

East Kent Rural economy, you can contact them at: www.nethergongnurseries.co.uk, email:

Caxton Contemporary will be exhibiting pieces created directly from the landscape of the Kent coastline in their

There’s still time to sponsor IMP writer Liz to take part in this year’s Race for Life. Liz will be joining hundreds of other women in running three miles from

Hampton to Swalecliffe and back in aid of cancer research. Although training has not been

going as well as she hoped because of a recurrence of old injuries, she is still determined to

complete the course in the fastest possible time. Liz said: “I always knew running on knees

that have endured several operations wasn’t going to be easy but it’s nothing compared to

what people battling cancer have to go through. So although I’ve given up on the idea of

breaking any land-speed records I’m still planning to run and I want to raise as much money as possible to help

those looking for ways to stop this cruel disease.” If you’d like to support Liz and help her on her way to her

target, visit www.justgiving.com/lizcrudgington

British directing hero Ken Loach has returned to our screens and to his

original form by bringing British audiences back into the world of our

societies and life within them. His latest picture, Looking For Eric, is a

collaboration of comedy, despair and idolisation. Eric Bishop (Steve Evets) is a

Manchester postman raising two reckless teenage boys alone whilst nursing

a broken-heart. The only thing that gets him through his repetitive lifestyle

is his love of football, and especially of cult football legend, Eric Cantona.

Bishop’s life is spiralling out of control and he is nearing crisis-point. His son

Ryan (Gerard Kearns) has began to work for local gangsters and is bringing his

‘work’ home with him, his other step-son Jess (Stefan Gumbs) is completely

lazy and doesn’t contribute to the upkeep of Eric’s disastrous house, and his

ex-wife Lily (Stephanie Bishop) is complicating his life further by making Eric

realise he is still madly in love with her. He is in need of help, a friend and

advice. He begins to see his idol Eric Cantona appear as a philosopher and

guide to help him through the struggles in his life. Bishop learns to stand up

for himself, make big changes in his life and understand who he really is.

Looking For Eric is not a film about football; it’s not a film about fame -

it’s about people. It’s a smart and thoughtful piece that highlights the most

important things in life. Loach has managed to blend two incredibly different

and difficult cinematic genres together and come out with a beautiful final

product. This film is essentially a Social Realism picture. It’s set in the North of

England, it ponders on ideals of the working-class male and shows the harsh

reality of criminal acts, yet he has managed to make all of these things seem

funny, without being offensive or stereotypical.

The only slight issue I had with this film was following Cantona’s accent

- sometimes it’s quite hard to understand what he is saying - but overall

Looking For Eric has everything you could really want in a picture. It has

a wonderful cast that you genuinely care about, quirky narrative, plenty of

laughs and, surprisingly, a fair few shocks too. It’s a great collective package

that will really reach out to a wide variety of audiences.

VERDICT: 4 out of 5 – It’s intelligent, moving, heart-felt and contains one of

the coolest lines this year: “I am not a man, I am Cantona.”

CROW “What befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth – to the tribes

of the Universe, one love.”The Tides of Apsaroke: Local band CROW’s album is a welcome addition to my music collection. Their music is a timeless collection of harsh and raw, coupled with pensive and conscientious, and you could enjoy them just as much in a seedy rock venue as you would on a vast, green festival field. CROW split up in 1995, but reformed in autumn of 2007 following news that their promoter Bryan Steele had passed on. Brian left a message with his family suggesting that CROW reform and play a gig at the Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone in his memory. CROW were delighted to take on the gig and celebrate the life of their friend. What I loved about listening to this album is its sense of balance. While there was some hard, angry, ‘bash your head’ kind of sounds, there were some restful, thoughtful offerings - I had the feeling that the first part of the album bashed down the walls and the second lent itself to a rebuilding and tasteful decorating of the mind. Thankfully the band is currently involved in making a long-awaited new album and I cannot wait to see how they have evolved and redecorated…

Track Listing: Tonal Side: 1. Thunderbird, 2. So very old, 3. Mean nothing, say nothing, 4. Testosterone, 5. What do you want? Nagual Side: 6. Apsaroke, 7. Sedation, 8. No reaction (Still), 9. Analyze, synthesize, 10. Trance

Mixed and fixed by Brian Gould and CROW

Medicine Wheel: Medicine Wheel is the kind of music that would be the perfect companion for someone taking a long trip. It meanders from hard and loud to melodic and dreamy and keeps one on one’s musical toes, as it were. There is no opportunity for complacency or fence-sitting for those listening to this album. One is forced to listen and to interact. Take this album with you if you need to drive a long distance because believe me, you will not fall asleep at the wheel…

Track Listing: 1. Ayermandominar, 2. Led Zep, 3. Poppy fields, 4. Circles, 5. E mosh, 6. NNI, 7. Sedation, 8. Conditioning Mixed and fixed by Rob Williams and CROW

Dear IMP,

We often used the Kavanagh but gave up

when the programme advertising ceased.

Also trying to access the box office failed

when staff could not be bothered to open

up. It seemed to us that the cinema was

being allowed to run down so the council

could use the space for something else,

offices maybe.

It would greatly increase attendance if, as

other cinemas do, the Kavanagh adopted

the revolutionary concept called advertising.

Putting a telephone number in the paper

is feeble... Advertise the programmes and

people, including ourselves, will return.

Yours faithfully,

Sharon Smith, Whitstable

Dear IMP,

I really like the magazine! It is nice to read

about people and places I know. I find it

informative and interesting. Please keep

up the good work!

I would like to say how pleased I am that

Whitstable once more has a Christian

bookshop. Since Two by Two opened I

don’t need to go all the way into Canterbury

anymore for the things I want to buy. The

people running it are very nice and they will

even give you a (free!) cup of tea when you

go in to browse. They are very helpful and

are happy to order anything in for you that

they might not have in the shop... They’re

on Canterbury road, do go in and have a

look, they sell some lovely stuff.

Karien Downes

Dear IMP,

I’ve just read the review of Angels and Demons by Chris Haydon in the June Issue. I haven’t seen this film yet and I don’t want to knock this young writer’s confidence but in the novel Leonardo Vetra (the first guy found murdered and mutilated) and his daughter Vittoria Vetra (who accompanies Langdon throughout) are both ‘physicists’ and not, as Chris writes, ‘psychiatrists’. Just think this is an important distinction!

Enjoying the IMPJane Goodwin

Oops! - thanks for bringing that to our attention, I think it must have been one of those ‘spell-check’ accidents...

Dear IMP,

I just wanted to say a big thank you! It’s been so helpful to find all the Oyster Festival events in one place, and delivered through my door this year. Most years we’ve missed things or heard about them after they’ve happened, but this year we won’t miss a thing!

Looking forward to the July issue,

Debra Maybourne

Thanks for your kind words, we’re glad to be of service! The added bonus is that this month we’ve been able to show changes and updates since the June IMP and the official Oyster Festival programmes were printed. Events listings start on page 29 and any changes are highlighted in colour.

Dear IMP,

My friend Becky Towner and I

do a Whitstable poetry walk

during Oyster Festival week. We

have produced a poetry pack

to accompany the walk and all

the the poems are about places

and aspects of Whitstable.

We thought the IMP might

be interested in publishing a

sample of the poems included...

if people are interested in

hearing more poems they can

do so at the Oyster Festival

Thanks,

POETS’ CORNER

The StreetNo houses, no shops, this is a strange kind of streetNo traffic, no signs, except for the tread of occasional feet. It may just be some sort of freak of current and tide, But this is a street that is lapped by waves on each side

It stretches like a finger into the seaAs if from the shore it tries to break free; From above it looks like a tapering strandThis bank is of clay and shingle, not sand.

Take a walk to the end if you’re briskBut beware there’s always a risk, Though the view of the slopes is simply a treatThe incoming tide can sometimes block the retreat

Visible only when the sea is quite low It is always subject to the ebb and the flow.Yet even when covered its contour will stay To break up the swells in the sweep of the bay

Why it is there is hard to decide Myths about its formation abide; But I like to think it marks the divide Between Whitstable verve and Tankerton pride

David Milton

Daily DissentTo all you motorists, your road sense is unreal

What don’t you understand about the word ‘illegal’?

Driving your vehicles still using your mobile

Totally oblivious to all other road users, while

You’re more intent on conversation

Than driving with due care and attention.

Seems a fine with points on your licence no deterrent -

Come on Mr Plod, stamp out this everyday dissent.

Sunday 26th JulyThe Festival has officially ended but there is plenty to keep you entertained.

The fabulous EPICentre food fair sponsored by Produced in Kent continues for a second day. Arts Spots can be found at Sarah Stoke’s Open Studios (26 Island Wall) and Sue Carfrae’s Open House (6 Northwood Road) as well as galleries in the town. The Whitstable Brewery Beer Festival has a DJ Reggae Roast in the afternoon, free entry all day and the Foolfighters playing in the evening (£5 entry). On a more mellow note, Whitstable Improvement Trust has arranged a tea dance and Deco 5 in Oxford Street has live jazz from 4-6pm.

THE WHITSTABLE OYSTER FESTIVAL THANKS ALL FESTIVAL SPONSORS AND FRIENDS FOR SUPPORT IN 2009We are exceptionally grateful to Cllr Mark Dance and Kent County Council for the Community Engagement Grant received to support the 2009 event. We have used this to increase our support to local performers and, as a result, we now have a wider range of local people and organisations taking part.

By sponsoring the Festival for a second year Vattenfall, owner of the Kentish Flats Wind Farm, have made a tremendous difference to what we can offer. As well as supporting the costs of power and energy, Vattenfall have additionally sponsored several festival events including Strictly Whitstable, the kite making workshop and kite flying event, and Whitstable Waves.

Produced in Kent is sponsoring this year’s EPICentre food event, which proved to be such a hit last year. We are delighted that such a great and passionate supporter of local food is adding its weight to this new event – it can only help Whitstable’s reputation for fine food to get evince better.

Chaucer Insurance has been a long-term and consistent supporter of the festival, and supports us as part of its wider Corporate Social Responsibility programme. Such committed support is greatly appreciated.

Chris West, the new Coastal Towns Manager, is providing sponsorship for an end of Festival music event in Whitstable Harbour this year. Thanks to this support the Festival is able to provide free music events for visitors and residents alike.

The KM Group, as one of our valued media partners will once again be providing media support but we are also particularly pleased that they will also be helping to ease traffic congestion with a park and ride at their office HQ!

If you are reading this you already know that The Whitstable IMP has joined forces with the Festival as a local media partner. This is excellent for the Festival as it means we can be sure that every house and business in Whitstable knows what’s on!

Heart, which used to be locally loved as Invicta fm, may have changed its name but its support for the Festival is as firm as ever, which makes us very happy.

East Kent Local Authority Arts Partnership has funded a drop-in workshop called ‘What Are You Doing Here?’ which brings something for teenagers into the festival programme.

Canterbury’s Extended Services has also provided funding to the festival, used to create Oyster Parade Family Workshops.

Festival Friends are the backbone of local business support and we are very grateful to each and every one of them. Please do support these businesses, however possible, because they are one of reasons we can keep the festival so affordable for everyone. In alphabetical order this year’s Festival Friends are: 4 Knots Yard, Arsenic and Old Lace, Chives Café, Crab & Winkle Seafood Restaurant, Deco5 Wine Bar, George’s Mini-market, Harbour Books, Horsebridge Arts & Community Centre, Jane at Graham Greener, Jenny Granger Gallery, Kites & Things, Lloyds TSB Commercial, Lucy’s Sandwich Bar, Lyre Studio, Mainwaring’s Seaside Brocante, Mosaic, Oxford Street Books, Pearsons, Peekaboo! Children’s Boutique, Reppin & Jones Jewellers, Samphire, Seychelles Fish Bar, Shangri La, Taking the Plunge, Tea and Times, The Duke of Cumberland Hotel, The Fish Slab Gallery, The Old Neptune, The Tudor Tea Rooms, The Whitstable Cottage Company, Wheelers Oyster Bar, Whitstable Harbour Village, Whitstable Holiday Homes, and Williams and Brown Tapas Bar.
