Whitlock’s philosophy...to develop individual players’ skills

on the pitch, but also to develop awareness of their role

within a grass roots organization, and the clubs’ part in a

greater community (Sarnia-Lambton).

Team Goals…

to improve on last year’s performances with both the

Developmental and Premier Sides.

to fully support at least one major community/club

event i.e. MS related events

What do we want to be known for?

We want to be known as the hardest working team on the

field, relentless in team defence and disciplined. I want

teams to come to town knowing they’re going to work 80

minutes to get points, and that our guys are going to make

them earn everything. This begins with a commitment to

this philosophy, a commitment to each other, and then an

inclusive commitment to improving individual tackling, unit

defence, and overall fitness.

become increasingly difficult. With the physical demands

of an 80 min match along with twice a week practices

during the hot summer months, participation in the game

proved to be far too taxing on his body. Five years after his

first diagnosis, he had to give up a game he loved.

Barry has now directed his concentration to fighting to find

a cure for MS by participating and raising awareness

through events such as the MS Super City Walks, the MS

Bike Tour and the Sarnia Saints MS Match.

Barry now resides in London Ontario with his wife

Meighen. He is attending School at Kings University

College, studying towards a double Honors Bachelor of

Arts Degree Major in

Thanatology and

Sociocultural

Anthropology. Currently

he is awaiting acceptance

into the School of Social

Work at Kings University

College.

Barry Chalmers, of Wyoming, Ontario, was introduced to

rugby at the age of 15 as a high school freshman. As a

member of the LCCVI Lancers rugby team, coached by

Jim Keane, Barry quickly learned the game, excelling at

the sport. The following year, in 1998, he made his debut

with the Sarnia Saints Rugby Club and has never looked

back.

Over the years, Barry has represented Sarnia with a high

level of integrity and passion for the game. He was

selected to represent the Niagara Rugby Union's U18

select side for the Ontario Games in 2000, in which they

took home the silver medal. That same year he was asked

to Captain the Saints' junior touring side to England and

Wales. He used his experience representing the NRU's

select side and was an indispensable leader of the touring

side. After gaining experience playing junior rugby, Barry

made a seamless transition to men’s rugby. He grew to

make many lifelong friends and had an immediate impact

on and off the pitch.

He was diagnosed with MS in 2003 at the young age of

23. He started noticing difficulties primarily with his hands,

legs and feet. To make quick movements started to

The Sarnia Saints Rugby Clubs’

2012 Vice Presidents

Coaching Fund Appeal Dear Friend of Rugby,

The Sarnia Rugby Club has been in play since 1958. Each year the clubs’ executive makes sure that all active mem-

bers of your club pay their annual dues in order to take part in play and practise. Dues collected go to cover registrations

and insurance to Rugby Ontario and Rugby Canada, the clubs operating expenses, and to buy uniforms and training equip-

ment. This year we need help.

The club now plays in a very tight Ontario Senior League. To be competitive with the clubs at our current level we bring

in guest coaches. For the past 4 years, the clubs executive and players have taken on a guest coach initiative offer-

ing qualified and vetted individuals a co-op formula to reimburse a portion of their travel after their arrival and a place to

sleep while they are in Sarnia. All other living expenses are paid for by guests themselves. No guest coaches Sarnia experi-

ence is ever entirely subsidized by the Sarnia Rugby Club. No guest has ever received payment for their time, efforts, and

contributions to our club, ever. Guests are only selected to play if there is a determined need. But this year, we need

some help.

This year the club is selling Vice President Memberships, committing proceeds to a coaching fund. A Vice Presidents

membership fee is $100. As well as cash, gifts in kind can be accepted. The coaching fund will be used for enhancing the

clubs coaching budget and to enrol club members into coaching clinics in the future.

Thank You for taking the time to read about your clubs Vice President memberships and its’ coaching initiative. If you

would like to become a 2012 Vice President of the Sarnia Rugby Club please let me know and I will make arrangements to

have a receipt issued and to give you appropriate recognition. As well, I’ll want to make it a priority to keep you informed

of activities and developments through this upcoming season.

Your Sarnia Rugby Club hopes to enjoy your support to this campaign. Thanks Again,

Ryan Mortensen, President

Sarnia Saints Rugby Club

ps: if you’d like, you can purchase a 2012 Vice Presidents Membership for a spouse or friend, as well as for yourself.
