School Leaders Badge Presentation in 2018 At the assembly this week, we presented school leaders with
their badges. This year’s leaders are: Sophia M, Ava, M,
Drew C, Jesse G, Lachie A, Kaden V, Aymee R, Aleksia F,
Jack G, Erin B, Chilli S and Angus C.
Congratulations to all the elected student leaders. I look
forward to watching them grow in this role as the year goes on.
At the assembly, I talked about role modelling as one of the
key skills of student leaders that marries with my leadership
motto: ‘Leadership is practised not so much in words as in
attitude and in actions.’
Staff Car Park A friendly reminder that the front car park on school grounds
is for teaching staff and special visitors, NOT for parents. Your
support is greatly appreciated.

classroom teacher to book a time.
Booking code: qqpk5 These interviews will be held at the school between Monday, 12th

No Jewellery Our school has a compulsory uniform policy which can be viewed on the school website under the ‘Policies’ tab or by clicking on
this link
http://www.whitehillsps.vic.edu.au/page/60/Policies
For health and safety reasons, students are not to wear jewellery to school. The following excerpts are from the school’s uniform
policy:
After consultation with the school community, School Council has developed a uniform policy that we believe provides
choice, allows for students to safely engage in the many varied school activities, and is cost effective for families.
The uniform options (Appendix 1) as per the White Hills Information Booklet applies during school hours, whilst travelling to
and from school, and when students are on school excursions.
Uniforms will be prescribed and are required to be worn.
Stud earrings and sleepers worn in the ears and watches are the only acceptable jewellery.
Extreme hair colours (eg. green, blue, pink or purple rinse) are discouraged.
All long hair should be tied back. Hair ties and head bands are to be navy, pale blue or school check.
Other than clear nail polish and clear lip gloss, cosmetics may not be worn at school.
The only headwear that is acceptable are navy broad brimmed hats consistent with our SunSmart policy. They must be worn
outside from September to April and on excursions and camps as required. Hats are not to be worn inside.
The student uniform policy, including details of uniform items and the uniform shop opening times, will be published in the
newsletter.
School Council requires the Principal be responsible for implementation of the uniform policy in a manner consistent with the
Student Code of Conduct.
Every Day counts – school attendance We all want our children to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with coming to school each and
every day.
Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the
end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school.
There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational
outcomes.
Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school, there are things we can do together to ensure
they don’t fall behind:
• Speak with your classroom teacher and find out what work your child needs to do to keep up.
• Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child completes the plan.
Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as early as possible. New laws
developed, mean that parents can be fined for not sending children to school without an acceptable reason.
And on time…… We also expect that children arrive on time ready to start at 9.00am. Children can arrive from 8.30am and classrooms open at 8.50am.
If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your child’s classroom teacher know so we can work together to get
your child to school every day.
If a student arrives late to school, or departs early (for a valid reason), they must be signed in or out by an approved adult at the
school office in the Sign In/Out book. Parents must NOT collect a child directly from the school yard or classroom. This is a
parental duty of care and child safety issue. A printed slip from the office must be provided to the class teacher for a late arrival
or early departure. Latecomers are NOT to go directly to their classroom. Your support with this process is appreciated.
REPEAT NOTICES
School Council Elections Each year, half our school councillors finish their 2 year term of office. This provides continuity and a gradual changeover of School
Council representatives throughout the years. Retiring council members are eligible to renominate for an additional term of office, if
they are still a parent at the school.
This year, there are 4 parent vacancies, and 2 DET employee (Department of Education and Training) vacancies.
Retiring Councillors are:

Notice from City of Greater Bendigo Parking Services from the City of Greater Bendigo have contacted our school and requested that the following information be
conveyed to our school community.
The illegal parking of vehicles adjacent to our school poses a safety concern to children, pedestrians and other road
users. Parents are reminded that it is essential to comply with parking restrictions when dropping off and collecting children from
school.
Motorists must not stop in no stopping areas, even briefly, with or without the motor running. They must not stop next to a
continuous yellow edge line, on nature strips, too close to school crossings, park over driveways or double park. A number of
schools have short term time restricted areas, such as 2 minute pick up drop off. These parking areas are in place to allow for ease
of access close to schools and these restrictions must be adhered to. Drivers should also be aware that they cannot perform a U-
turn over an unbroken or continuous dividing line.
With regard to children’s crossings, the law requires that a driver approaching a children’s crossing must drive at a speed at
which the driver can, if necessary stop safely before the crossing. Please slow down and take extra care when driving in school
zones. /
City of Greater Bendigo Parking Officers and Bendigo Police do conduct random patrols throughout the school year at various
locations to ensure that motorists are adhering to the Road Rules.

P&F Group
Music Madness Welcome
Welcome everyone to what will hopefully be an action packed, fun filled and talent laiden year in music!
There is plenty to do in music this year, some old things re-worked, new ideas to try and lots of tweaking in between – so hopefully
something for everyone.
Choir
This year, we have opened the choir up from grade 2 to grade 6 and the response so far has been OVERWHELMING! Louise
MacGregor will be assisting me with choir this year and has been running my choirs for nearly 10 years with great success. However,
if there are any parents or family members who would like to assist us we would greatly appreciate it!
Choir is on from 1.40pm – 2.30pm EVERY Wednesday
Band
A major re-structure of the band will occur this year as we will start small and look to expand as the year goes on. At this stage, we
are holding auditions for band on Friday. The children are required to learn the music to an old classic “Sweet Child of Mine” for the
first part of the audition and then have 2-3 minutes to “show off” their other skills! There are 6-10 positions available.
The goal of the band this year is to perfect and perform 6-8 rock songs throughout the year, performing at assemblies, out of school
locations, competitions or anywhere people will have us!
Again, anyone that would like to assist in the band is more than welcome.
Band is on from 10am-11am EVERY Friday
Private Lessons
Drew Thorpe Music will again be teaching private lessons at school and I hope to work closely with Drew and his team to get as
many kids as we can learning a musical instrument. The benefits of learning an instrument are enormous and it will help build a
terrific music program and culture in the school with kids taking up this challenge. Drew is hoping to provide our program as much
support as possible, including the opportunity to start a large percussion group to perform at various functions!
Please contact Drew Thorpe Music on 0407 502 438 for more information.
See his flyer in the Community News
Free lessons
As part of building the ideal music culture and an awesome rock band for the future, I will be taking free instrument lessons in the
music room during school time. These lessons will be approx. 25 mins and will be group lessons. I’ll start with guitar and offer
lessons to Grade 4 & 5 kids this year (on a rotation basis). Given the very large interest in these lessons, they will be limited to 10
per child and will also require plenty of practice at home to make the most of the lessons. More information on these sessions will
be displayed in the newsletter during Term 1.

Book Packs and Reader Bags
Please remember to return all of the equipment that was supplied in your book pack. We know it may look like a lot of pencils and
glue sticks, however students will use all of these throughout the year. We have also noticed a number of students without Reader
Bags. If you are unable to find yours you can purchase another one from the school uniform shop.

Middle School News
Senior School News Grade 5 News Welcome back to a new year
We have had a busy start so it seems like we have been back for longer. We are doing a lot of testing at the moment but the kids have
been fantastic with the changes to the timetable to allow for this.
Lit. Circles and Homework
We have had our first week of both. Check with your child what day their homework is handed out and then returned. Some of you
will be familiar with Lit. Circles and how it works. A group of 6 students choose a book that they are interested in and can read. The
group decides on how far they will read in the week but it is really important that they don’t read further than what was decided on.
The book stays home, in a safe place, until Lit. Circle day. The group will then work on a reading task that involves group discussion
and written responses that will show a deeper understanding of what they have read. Feel free to read some of the novel with your
child or listen to them read. If they are not understanding parts of the story, some discussion with them may help.
As some students have already found out, they need to be organised and responsible.
Goal setting Interviews and Netbooks
Hopefully you have booked a time for student goal setting. Students are looking forward to taking their netbooks home after one of
the information sessions has been attended.
Welcome BBQ
We hope to see as many families as possible at the BBQ.
Grade 6 News Homework
This year homework will be handed out on a Friday and expected to be submitted by the following Friday. We will rotate between a
Maths, Literacy and ICT task, as well as a spelling task where students will practise their 5 spelling words each week. Our first
homework task will be handed out on Friday, 9th February, and due back the following Friday morning. This week’s homework will
involve a literacy and spelling task. We appreciate parents’ encouraging and supporting their child with the completion and
submission of homework every week.
Grade 6 T-Shirts
Parents and families who did not order a grade 6 t-shirt can still order one if this was not done last year. Orders are due by Friday,
16th February, and can be placed at the school office. This is the last opportunity for parents to buy one of these t-shirts.
Bupa
This Friday will be the first time ten students for term 1 will ride to the nursing home Bupa to interact with the residents. Every
Friday, this group of students will leave the school during the middle of lunch time to ride to the nursing home, and will be back at
school by 3.30pm. Can parents of these students please make sure that their bikes and helmets are in good condition before Friday.
