White Hills News
Principal’s News Hi everyone,
Canteen Closed
Due to the building project getting underway, last Friday was the
last day of our school canteen.
The decision to outsource the canteen was made at the February
school council meeting. The option was to spend $16,000
upgrading a kitchen space in the BER building for canteen to
continue. However, this was not supported, mainly due to the
potential disruption to learning in this space. School Council were
passionate about providing a lunch option to students and
families. The school is collecting lunch possibilities from local
businesses and a decision will be made at the next school council
meeting (March 16th) about the successful provider. This will
mean that there will be no orders other than Subway on a
Thursday for a few weeks. Once a provider is selected, all lunch
orders will be via QkR. More information about this will follow.
If the school received additional funding to build the gymnasium,
a new kitchen canteen facility will be incorporated into the plan.
I am meeting with Jacinta Allen tomorrow to plead our case for
additional funding.
Maintaining good health hygiene at school
Due to the concerns about Coronavirus and its potential of
spreading and timely reminder to staff, families and children that
everyone can protect against infections by practising good hand
hygiene and respiratory hygiene. Here are some tips that everyone
can follow:
•Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a
tissue, or cough into your elbow.
•Dispose of the tissue into a bin and then wash your hands
afterwards.
•Wash your hands regularly, after using the toilet, and before
eating.
If you have any health-related questions, please email:
Building Refurbishment update
Searle Brothers have erected their temporary fencing around the
school building included in Stage 1 (Eastern end of the building).
A construction work enclosure has begun at the front of the
school on the grassed area to the East of the entrance. This means
that parents and students will no longer be able to access
classrooms via the marked walkway along the staff carpark. If
students and families are entering the school from Plumridge
Street, they will now need to use the main entrance (near the
crossing) or the bike entrance closer to the bridge. The building
works will not effect families using the back entrance to the
school (Bosquet Street).
National Ride2School Day
TOMORROW - Friday 13 March 2020
Join more than 350,000 students across the nation who will ride,
walk, scoot and skate to school on Friday 13 March 2020Ride To
School Day.
The problem-Over the past 40 years the number of children who
are physically active everyday has significantly dropped. In the
1970s, eight out of ten students rode or walked to school but
today that number has dropped to just two out of ten.
The solution-Students who ride or walk to school contribute to
their minimum physical activity level of 60 minutes per day.
They are also more focused and ready to learn compared to those
who are driven.
Building Project underway
We have finally seen some action on site with the temporary fencing, levelling
of the front lawn area and site shed constructed. Works on Phase 1 (Eastern side
of the main building) begin immediately.
Prep Transition Survey
This week, our prep teachers have posted the link to parents of a prep student to
complete our transition survey. Can I remind prep parents to please take the time
to complete this survey as the information you provide helps us build on and
improve our processes here at White hills PS.
School Council Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Annual Report
presentation
On Monday 16th March at 6.30pm, the new school council will convene for the
AGM and presentation of the 2019 Annual Report to the community. This
meeting is open to all parents. Copies of the Annual Report for 2019 will be
available to pick up from the office next week and it will be uploaded to the
school’s website.
Smile Squad Dental Service
Last Friday the Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews along with local Members
of Parliament Jacinta Allen and Maree Edwards visited the school to launch the
dental program initiative ‘Smile Squad’ that provides free oral health
examinations and follow up treatment to all Victorian government primary,
secondary and special school students over the next four years.
P&F News The Shed Guys Open Air Cinema Screening of “Spies in Disguise”
This year for our family fun social event, we are screening “Spies in Disguise” on our school oval on
Friday 20th March. Flyers for ordering of tickets and information have gone home with your eldest
child last week. Tickets are $7.00 each, and food combo’s from our PFG food zone are available
prior to the event. Tickets, food and drinks will be available to purchase at the event via cash only.
PFG will be selling hotdogs with/without cheese, lolly bags, packets of chips, popcorn, soft drinks,
water and glowsticks. This year we will also have ‘The Grilled Cheeserie’ food van present, selling
hot foods like gourmet toasties and fries. Please check out their Facebook page for more details.
(please note, they will not be selling cold drinks.) https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Fast-
Food-Restaurant/The-Grilled-Cheeserie-Goldfields-food-catering-446036619548248/ We will also
have a coffee van present selling hot drinks. We hope to see as many families as possible there for a
fun, low cost, social night out, in a relaxed outdoor atmosphere.
Hunky Dory Fish & Chips has kindly donated 2 x $100 gift packs, which will given to two lucky winners who have pre-purchased
their tickets. Pre-purchased ticket stubs will be put into a draw, after collection from the gate at the event, and drawn early in the
week following. So to be in the running – pre purchase your tickets before next Wednesday! Thank you to our major sponsor – The
Shed Guys Bendigo for again supporting this event, and our other significant sponsors: Hunky Dory, Bendigo Dyno Tuning, and The

school office. Cost is $1.00 per sheet. The Art teachers will be choosing our winners! Competition closes
Wednesday 18th March at 4.00pm. The winners will be announced at the Open Air Cinema evening.
Easter Raffle The Easter raffle this year will be drawn at our final term assembly on Friday 20th March. Raffles books have
been distributed and will need to be returned by 4pm on Wednesday 18th March. You are welcome to take
another book of tickets once your first book and money has been returned to the office.

staffroom. All newcomers are welcome to attend any meeting! You may bring along younger siblings to our
meetings as well. Come and have morning tea with us, a chat and a laugh, and find out what we do around the
school.
Mother’s Day/Special Person Stall
Our stall will be held on Friday 8th May, early in Term 2. As always, we request that all students donate a
gift to the value of $2.00 – new, unopened gifts only please. Over the holidays is a good time to have a look
around and pick up a bargain. We ask that everyone please provide one gift per student to enable every student
to purchase a gift at the stall. Please leave your donations at the office by Monday 4th May. Thank you for
your support. Thank you from PFG members
