Editorial

It was a period of 'new' as the recently joined Freshmen Class slowly starts to settle down into their lives at Shiv Nadar

University - their home for the coming years. New classes, new classmates, new friends, and new experiences; much

was going on in the life of students - new and old ones alike.

With back-to-back Orientation Sessions, and Club auditions, July went away in frenzy. The month saw who's who of

academia and industry visiting Shiv Nadar University to interact with the newly joined Class of 2022, as part of their

Orientation Session.

Came August and life was falling into pattern once again; of course complimented with bouts of excitement, as the

University hosted British Council's reputed 'Future Leaders Connect - Heats Event'. August also marked the orientation

of SNU's prestigious M.Sc. in Water Science and Policy (WSP) Program; and Certificate Program in WSP. The

first-of-its-kind WSP program is delivered by experts around the world who have worked on issues related to water,

made policies and initiated change.

Meanwhile, the much awaited results of OUR conference were also announced. Read about the winners' projects in the

current issue of Whistling Teal.

September marked an important chapter in Shiv Nadar University's timeline. Mr. Shiv Nadar, Founder and

Chairman – HCL, Shiv Nadar Foundation; and Founder of Shiv Nadar University, assumed the office of Chancellor w.e.f.

20 September 2018. The former Chancellor, Dr. S.N. Balakrishnan sought a transition in the position, given his

increasingly demandingly schedule and engagement.

Mr. Shikhar Malhotra assumed the office of Pro Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University. He is being supported by

Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh, Vice Chancellor; and Mr. Rajiv Swarup, President. The two important appointments have

infused fresh energy into the institution, and the pace of growth has suddenly enhanced. Members of the SNU

family - students, faculty, and staff - all are brimming with excitement and are poised to achieve more under the dynamic

New Appointments

Shiv Nadar assumes office of ChancellorMr. Shiv Nadar, Founder and Chairman of HCL Enterprise, an $8.1 billion global organization, and Shiv Nadar Foundation, assumed the office of Chancellor of the Shiv Nadar University on 20 September 2018. The former Chancellor, Dr. S.N. Balakrishnan sought a transition in the position of Chancellor, given his increasingly demanding schedule and engagements.

Mr. Nadar is credited with being one of the pioneers of the computing and IT industry in India. Under his guidance HCL has continued to ride the waves of the changing IT landscape for over 40 years and remain at the forefront of every technological revolution since 1976.

Mr. Nadar credits his success to the education and scholarships that he received during his early years. He has always maintained that access to quality education is the most potent tool of transformation and therefore, in 1994, he established the philanthropic - Shiv Nadar Foundation. The Foundation draws heavily on Mr. Nadar’s experience of building a world-class organization like HCL. It endeavors to create institutions of transformational education that will continue to influence and nurture the country’s youth for decades to come. To this effect, the Shiv Nadar Foundation has established six institutions covering the entire spectrum of education, which aim to address the

issue of quality in education, create lasting partnerships and have a strong research orientation.

As of 2018, Mr. Nadar has invested close to $800 million through the Foundation, impacting over 25,000 students directly. However, the Foundation’s ultimate aim is to nurture the next generation of leaders in the ideologies of symbiotic growth so that each of them may in turn aspire to affect a small change, creating a large multiplier effect. The impact of the Shiv Nadar Foundation institutions is today reflected in the aspirations of meritorious students who started their journeys from humble, geographically, remote backgrounds but are today pursuing their dreams in India as well as other countries.

In recognition of his pioneering role in business and philanthropy in India and across the globe, Mr. Nadar has received several honours and accolades, notable being the Padma Bhushan from the President of India in 2008.

Mr. Nadar is married to Kiran, an Asian Games medalist and internationally renowned bridge player. She is also one of the largest Indian Art collectors in the world.

OUR ProgramOpportunities for Undergraduate Research (OUR) program instituted in Shiv Nadar University is a beyond curriculum research opportunity for undergraduate students to work on research projects of their interest irrespective of their current program of study.

In its fourth edition (2017-2018), 69 projects were showcased by students during the 4th Opportunity for Undergraduate Research Conference held at Shiv Nadar University on 21-22 April 2018. Jury consisting of senior faculty members assessed the projects and oral presentations were made by the students. Top three positions were awarded to the following students:

In this project we had a brief discussion about the study of classical- and quantum-chaos. We follow it with a survey of the “Standard Map”, where variation of a certain parameter leads to the transition from integrable or regular to chaotic regime. This is inferred by examining the associated trajectories in the phase space. We then move over to explore quantum chaos by considering Quarter Stadium Billiard, where the change of certain length parameter α causes the crossover of the Nearest Neighbour Spacing Distribution (NNSD) of Eigenvalues from Poissonian to GOE statistics. Within Random Matrix Theory, GOE refers to the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble of random matrices, which is used to model chaotic systems exhibiting time-reversal invariance. The crossover is realized with the aid of a parameter 𝜆, which relates to the degree of chaos in thesystem. With our analysis we could figure out the relationship between this parameter 𝜆 and thelength parameter 𝜆 of the billiard system.

Molecular chaperones play a multi-faceted role in the cell and their primary function is to assist in protein folding. This study was focused on Hsp70 class molecular chaperones of the mitochondria. It has been shown that there is a highly conserved cysteine residue in the ATPase domain of most Hsp70 proteins, which acts as a sensor for oxidative stress by being susceptible to thiol oxidation, leading to inactivation of ATPase activity. Surprisingly, a mitochondrial Hsp70 chaperone in the budding yeast ¬Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Ssc1 has been found to lack this highly conserved residue and is replaced by an alanine at its position. The study aims to understand the rationality behind the non-conservation of this residue by introducing an alanine to cysteine mutation by site-directed mutagenesis in this chaperone after deletion of the genomic copy of the same.

Brief Abstract of the Project

Our study analysed the physical and thermochemical properties of sun-dried food waste, before and after torrefaction. Torrefaction has gained popularity in recent times as a pre-treatment technique to improve the physical and thermochemical properties of biomass. However, food waste as a potential biomass for energy purposes has not been explored much, hence our choice to conduct a research study on. In our study, torrefaction has been carried out at different temperatures and residence times in a fixed bed reactor. The solid torrefied products were analysed by proximate analysis, ligno--cellulose analysis, HHV and various process parameters like mass yield, energy yield and energy density. The FTIR analysis was done to determine the chemical composition of the torrefied solid. Mass Spectroscopy was done to analyse the composition of the bottom liquid product from torrefac-tion. It was found that the food waste underwent several changes in terms of its properties, the most notable being breakdown of ligno-cellulose, loss of moisture and rise in HHV. We concluded the optimum temperature and residence time to carry out torrefaction of food waste to be 325˚C and 20 minutes.

Musings

I want to travel back in the day,

I miss things a little too much today.

When all I had to do was clean up my room,

And travel with fairies on a magic broom,

When eating mangoes with them slipping was the biggest task,

And you could be yourself without feelings to mask,

When being hurt meant scraping your knee,

And an astronaut was all you ever wanted to be,

When daddy's shoulder was the biggest throne,

And you didn't have to worry about dropping your phone,

When we used to annoy Maa with our endless banter,

And believed Santa to be our wish granter,

When sleeping early felt like a punishment,

And getting the tv remote was the only argument,

When evening scooter rides with Nana were a ritual,

And Nani's bedtime stories were spiritual,

When we used to pretend sleep to be carried from one room

to another,

And kissed goodnight to one another,

When we used to call the moon uncle,

And looked out to see the stars twinkle

I want to travel back in the day,

I miss things a little too much today.

Kratika Aggarwal (Class of 2021) B.Tech. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering

TIME TRAVEL HOMEIf you ever find your way back to my home,

you'll find yourself on the cracked walls.

Cracked, because no one could fill them after you.

In the corner of this little home,

you'll find a door with a broken knob.

Broken, because no one came knocking after you.

In this place that I used to call a home,

you'll find a messy bed sheet.

Messy, because no one cared enough after you.

I know you've found another home for yourself.

I know you color those walls now.

Yet, I have this dream every night.

After the sun goes down,

You'll come back once and fill my house with your perfume,

Making this house, our home again.

Flora-Fauna

The sprawling 286 acre campus of Shiv Nadar University is blessed with natural bounty and enjoys the company of diverse flora and fauna. In this edition, continuing with our exploration of medicinal plants, we bring to you Boerhavia diffusa L. - Punarnava. The Black Drongo, who is a frequent visitor at the University is featured under the Fauna.

Boerhavia diffusa is an important Ayurvedic herb belonging to the

‘Four o’clock family’ Nyctaginaceae. The plant is popularly known

as ‘Punarnava’ in both Hindi and Sanskrit. It is found distributed

in wastelands, roadsides, railway lines, crevices of old walls, foot

paths and edges of lawns. The flowering and fruiting occur almost

throughout the year.

In Ayurveda, Punarnava is meant for rejuvenation and it renews

the whole body and gives a new life and health. It strengthens

the body and normalizes all the doshas, which helps to boost

the immunity to diseases. Thus, the plant Punarnava acts on all

important organ systems and rejuvenate them, giving a new life.

Punarnava acts as a carminative, increases appetite, digests Ama (residue of undigested or partially digested food in

Ayurveda) and reduces abdominal pain and also relieves constipation. Medicinally, Punarnava root has antidiabetic,

anti-inflammatory, diuretic, tonic and hepatoprotective properties. Leaf extract/juice of Punarnava is used in the

treatment of eye diseases, especially for cataract removal. Fresh leaf juice with honey is dropped into the eyes for the

treatment of chronic ophthalmia, night blindness and conjunctivitis.

Plant infusion is given in asthma and bronchitis; it clears the lungs and reduces cough, asthma, etc. In Arthritis,

Punarnava helps to reduce inflammation and pain in joints.

The Black drongo (Dicrurus macrocercus) is a small Asian

passerine bird of the drongo family Dicruridae. It is a common

resident breeder in much of tropical southern Asia from

southwest Iran through India and Sri Lanka east to southern China

and Indonesia. It is a wholly black bird with a distinctive forked tail

and measures 28 cm (11 in) in length. It feeds on insects, and is

common in open agricultural areas and light forest throughout its

range, perching conspicuously on a bare perch or along power or

telephone lines. The species is known for its aggressive

behaviour towards much larger birds, such as crows, never

hesitating to dive-bomb any bird of prey that invades its territory.

This behaviour earns it the informal name of king crow. Smaller

birds often nest in the well-guarded vicinity of a nesting black

drongo.

The black drongo has been introduced to some Pacific islands, where it has thrived and become abundant to the point

of threatening and causing the extinction of native and endemic bird species there.
