12:1-2 "PLAYING THE GAME"

QUESTION AS TO WHO WROTE THIS EPISTLE HASN'T BEEN SETTLED. BOOK IS ANONYMOUS. SOME SCHOLARS SAY PAUL WROTE IT; OTHERS SAY BARNABAS OR APOLLOS WROTE IT. AND OTHERS SUGGEST IT WAS WRITTEN BY A WOMAN, A BRILLIANT WOMAN NAMED PRISCILLA. GO ON TO SUGGEST SHE WAS NEVER GIVEN CREDIT FOR HER WORK BECAUSE WOMEN WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW ANYTHING IN THOSE DAYS.

BUT WHOEVER THE WRITER WAS, HE OR SHE, WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE GREEK GAMES. IN THESE VERSES THE WRITER SPEAKS OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IN TERMS OF A FOOT-RACE. HE PICTURES THE AMPHITHEATER WITH ITS TIERS OF SEATS THRONGED BY SPECTATORS WHO ARE PRESENT TO WATCH THE CONTESTS AND TO CHEER THEIR CHOSEN CHAMPIONS. AND DOWN THERE IS THE ARENA AND THE ATHLETES.

THE RUNNERS STRIP OFF THEIR SUPERFLUOUS GAR-MENTS THAT THEY MIGHT RUN WITH FREEDOM. THEY TOE THE MARK. NOW THE RACE IS ON! THE THOUSANDS IN THE SEATS BECOME EXCITED; THEY ARE ON THEIR FEET. AND THE RACE GOES ON. WITH EYES FIXED STEADILY UPON THE DISTANT GOAL, EACH ATHLETE STRAINS EVERY FIBER OF HIS BEING TO WIN THE COVETED PRIZE.

IT 1 S A TELLING METAPHOR. AS THE AMPHITHEATER IS CROWDED BY SPECTATORS WHO WATCH THE GAMES, SO THE ARENA OF LIFE IS SURROUNDED BY A GREAT CLOUD OF WITNESSES - AMONG WHOM ARE THE HEROES SPOKEN OF IN THE PRECEDING CHAPTER - ABRAHAM, MOSES, JOSHUA, THOSE WHO 'STOPPED THE MOUTHS OF LIONS', TORTURED, THOSE WHO 'STONED, SAWN ASUNDER, SLAIN WITH SWORD, WHO TOOK REFUGE IN DENS AND CAVES OF THE EARTH' . THESE ARE WATCHING HOW WE RUN THE RACE. THESE ARE IN THE SPECTATORS' SEATS. AND IF YOU SO DESIRE YOU MAY ADD TO THE. THRILLING LIST OF HEROES. WRITE IN THE NAME OF KAGAWA, ALBERT SCHWEITZER, BISHOP BERGRAAF, MARTIN NEIMOLLER AND MADAME CHIANG KAI-SHEK. AND ALL THE SAINTS AND MARTYRS OF EVERY AGE AND EVERY LAND. -2-ALL THESE SPECTATORS, LET US RUN WITH UNFLINCHING PURPOSE, THE RACE BEFORE US, WITH OUR EYES FIXED UPON JESUS". AND NOW WITH THIS METAPHOR IN CENTER OF OUR INTEREST, IT IS AN EASY TRANSITION TO THE THEME OF THE SERMON TO-NIGHT "PLAYING THE GAME".

"PLAYING THE GAME" - A HERE IS A WORTHY PHRASE! DANGEROUS TRADITION. MANY OF US HAVE USED IT

WHEREBY WE HAVE TESTED OUR ACTIONS AND MOTIVES.

WE QUESTION OURSELVES - ARE WE PLAYING THE GAME? TO SOME OF US THIS PHRASE HAS BECOME A TRADITION. IN FACT, THIS IS THE TRADITION THAT MORE THAN ANY OTHER HAS BEE.N ASSOCIATED WITH ENGLAND. THE TEST IS RIGHT HERE - AM I PLAYING THE GAME? REMEMBER IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO WAS WON ON THE PLAYING FIELDS OF ETON. AND IT WAS KIPLING WHO WROTE THE LINES THAT EVERY ENGLISH BOY LEARNS: CAN'T EXPECT YOU TO UNDERSTAND THE LINES FULLY FOR THEY SPEAK OF CRICKET - INCIDENTALLY THAT WORD "CRICKET" IS USED AS A SYNONYM FOR THE PHRASE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT. BUT HERE ARE THE LINES AS I RECALL THEM: "THERE'S A BREATHLESS HUSH IN THE CLOSE TONIGHT; TEN TO MAKE AND THE MATCH TO WIN" .

THE PHRASE HAS VALUE AS A TRADITION. BUT SOME HAVE ALLOWED IT TO BECOME ALMOST A RELIGION. THUS A MAN SAYS "I'M NOT WHAT YOU MIGHT CALL A RELIGIOUS MAN BUT I DO BELIEVE IN PLAYING THE GAME". "I BELIEVE IN BEING DECENT". LET "S MAKE A COMPOSITE PICTURE OF THIS TYPE OF PERSON: GENEROUS, SYMPATHETIC, KIND, GOOD NEIGHBOR LOYAL TO HIS OBLIGATIONS, HIGHLY RESPECTED, {'DECENT'', BELONGS TO GOOD CLUB, SUPPORTS WORTHWHILE COMMUNITY PROJECTS. BUT FAILS TO SEE VALUE OF RELIGION FOR HIS PERSONAL LIFE - AND MANAGES TO LIVE A DECENT LIFE WITHOUT IT. PLAYS THE GAME. HARD TO TELL DIFFERENCE BETWEE THIS DECENT PAGAN AND THE ORDINARY CHRISTIAN. AND WERE WE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THE COMPANY OF THIS DECENT PAGAN AND SOME OF OUR FELLOW-CHRISTIANS, WE WOULD TAKE THE PAGAN - HE 1 S MORE FUN.

BUT THIS NEEDS TO BE SAID; PLAYING THE GAME IS NOT ENOUGH WHEN IT BECOMES A SUBSTITUTE FOR RELIGION. DECENCY IS NOT ENOUGH FOR IT CANNOT GUARANTEE THE SURVIVAL OF DECENCY ITSELF. THE FINEST VALUES IN. LIFE PERISH WHEN DIVORCED FROM ETERNAL BACKGROUND. THE VIRTUES OF DECENCY - TOLERANCE,

Page 4: WHEREFORE, SEEING WE ALSO ARE COMPASSED … THE GAME.pdf · hebrews 12:1-2 "playing the game ... of his being to win the coveted prize. ... is made to run on tracks and if it remains
Page 5: WHEREFORE, SEEING WE ALSO ARE COMPASSED … THE GAME.pdf · hebrews 12:1-2 "playing the game ... of his being to win the coveted prize. ... is made to run on tracks and if it remains

-3-KINDNESS, LOYALTY, SELF- NTROL, HELPFULNESS, DO NOT LONG SURVIVE iiTHO A SPIRITUAL DYNAMIC AND BACKGROUND. WHEN PLAY G THE GAME IS JUST A SYNONYl~ FOR DECENCY, T N IT I S NOT ENOUGH. THAT KI OF GAME WILL NEVE SAVE THE WORLD - WILL NEVER THRUST A PERSON T INTO SOME FLAMING, PASSIONATE CRUSADE. THAT K OF GAME HAS NO RISKS IN IT. IT IS AS SAFE AS .. KS. THAT SPIRIT WOULD NEVER HAVE THRUST WILFRED GRENFELL TOWARD THE BLEAK COASTS OF LABRADOR OR DAVID LIVINGSTONE INTO THE HEART OF AFRICA. ONE WOULD HAVE STAYED SAFELY IN HARLEY STREET, LONDON, THE OTHER WOULD HAVE BECOME AN ELDER IN THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF BLANTYRE IN SCOTLAND.

THE RULES OF THE GAME. OF COURSE TONIGHT I AM ADDRESSING MYSELF PARTICULARLY TO YOUTH AND APPEALING

TO THEM TO PLAY THE GAME IN ITS FINEST FORM. REMEMBER WE ARE IN THE ARENA; SURROUNDED BY MANY WITNESSES. AND I WOULD SAY A WORD ABOUT THE RULE OF THE GAME. PLEASE ALLOW ME TO SAY THIS TO YOU: WITH ALL YOUR LOVABLE QUALITIES, FEARLESS THINKIN AND ABSOLUTE SINCERITY, YOU HAVE A HATRED OF DISCIPLINE. IT IRKS YOU; SOMETIMES YOU SCOFF AT IT. YOU THINK WE OLDER FOLKS ARE TYRANNICAL HEN WE SEEK TO REMIND OF CERTAIN RULES AND CONVENTIONS.

I THINK THAT SOMETIMES YOU THINK THESE CONVENTIONS AND RULES . 'ERE THOUGHT OUT BY A COMMI OF PRE-VICTORIAN OLD LADIES HO MET ONE WET MORNING AND BECAUSE THEY HAD NOTHING ELSE TO DO DECID ED TO MAKE A FEW CONVENTIONS AND MORAL LAWS. THEY DIDN'T COME THAT WAY . THEY WERE DISCOVERED THRO' BITTER EXPERIENCE - THEY ARE A PART OF THE UNIVERSE ITSELF. SAYS STANLEY JONES "JUST AS NEWTON DID NOT PASS THE LAW OF GRAVITATION BUT DISCOVERED IT, SO WE DO NOT PASS THE MORAL LAWS WRITTEN IN THE CONSTITUTION OF THINGS; WE DISCOVER THEM. AND WE MUST COME TO TERMS WITH THEM. IF NOT, WE SHALL BE BROKEN. WE DO NOT BREAK THESE MORAL LAWS, THEY BREAK US. IN THIS MORAL UNIVERSE WE ARE FREE TO CHOOSE, BUT NOT FREE TO CHOOSE THE RESULTS OF OUR CHOOSING - THEY ARE IN HANDS OTHER THAN OURS'' .

IT WAS SAMSON YOU REMEMBER, ' iHO CRIED "LET ME BE FREE n- FREE OF CRUSTY CONVENTION; FREE OF

Page 6: WHEREFORE, SEEING WE ALSO ARE COMPASSED … THE GAME.pdf · hebrews 12:1-2 "playing the game ... of his being to win the coveted prize. ... is made to run on tracks and if it remains

HIMSELF ALONE AT LAST. THIS IS A GAME THAT OFTEN MEANS LONELINESS AND OSTRACISM. IT IS A GAtm THAT DEMANDS COURAGE. BARRIE'S ADDRESS TO STUDENTS AT ST. ANDREWS; "COURAGE IS THE THING. ALL GOES IF COURAGE GOES. AND BE NOT MERELY COURAGEOUS, BE LIGHTHEARTED AND GAY". THEN WENT ON TO SPEAK OF HENLEY IN HOSPITAL AND HIS POEM 11 INVICTUS".

YOU ARE IN THE ARENA; MANY EYES, LOVING EYES ARE UPON YOU AS YOU ENTER THE GAME. MAY GOD GIVE YOU COURAGE AND STAMINA FOR THE STRUGGLE; MAY YOU FIND EXHILARAXION .. AND JOY IN THE GAME; AND MAY YOU BE KEPT FAITHFUL UNTIL THE END OF THE GAME.

''EVER INSURGENT LET ME BE, MAKE ME MORE DARING THAN DEVOUT; FROM SLEEK CONTENTMENT KEEP ME FREE, AND FILL ME WITH A BUOYANT DOUBT.

FROM COMPROMISE AND THINGS HALF-DONE, KEEP ME, WITH STERN AND STUBBORN PRIDE; AND WHEN, AT LAST, THE FIGHT IS WON, GOD, KEEP ME STILL UNSATISFIED.

FROM "PRAYER" BY LOUIS UNTEfu\iEYER

-4-MOULDY MORALITY, FREE OF CONSCIENCE AND HONOR. HE FOUND HIMSELF IN THE GRIP OF TYRANNY FAR GREATER THAN THAT HE SOUGHT TO ESCAPE. HE WAS SURE HE WAS GOING TO JOIN THE RANKS OF THE EMANCIPATED SIT IN THE SUNSHINE ABOVE THE DULNESS OF CONVENTIONAL MORALITY. BUT HE FOUND HIMSELF "EYELESS IN GAZA 11 - BLINDED AND YOKED TO THE GRINDING MILL IN PHILISTIA.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS ABSOLUTE FREE DOM. FREEDOM IS FOUND ONLY IN BONDAGE AND CAPTIV ITY. HINDU MYSTIC PUTS IT THIS WAY; "HERE IS A VIOLIN STRING. IT IS FREE TO MOVE IN ANY DIRECTIO I PLEASE. IF I T IST ONE END THE OTHER TURNS. IT IS FREE - BUT NOT FREE TO SING. NOW I TAKE IT AND BIND IT INTO MY VIOLIN. THERE! AND WHEN IT IS BOUND, IT IS FREE FOR THE FIRST TIME TO SING. 11 OR TO QUOTE STANLEY JONES AGAIN, "A RAILROAD ENGINE IS MADE TO RUN ON TRACKS AND IF IT REMAINS ON THE TRACKS IT FINDS ITS FREEDOM, PULLS ITS LOAD AND GETS TO ITS DESTINATION'' . IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN PLAYING THE GAME YOU MUST OBSERVE THE RULES. THERE IS AN "IF" TO EVERY PRIVILEGE.

PLAYING TO THE GALLERY. LEST YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN THE TEXT LET ME REMIND YOU OF IT ONCE MORE . THE

WRITER IS URGING US TO REMEMBER WE ARE UNDER THE SCRUTINY OF A CLOUD OF WITNESSES AS WE PLAY THE GAME. IN EFFECT HE IS TELLING US TO "PLAY TO THE GALLERY". PLAYING TO THE GALLERY IS USUALLY THE EMPLOYMENT OF SOME CHEAP METHOD WHEREBY TO WIN APPROVAL OF AN AUDIENCE. TO BE CHARGED WITH PLAYING TO THE GALLERY IS USUALLY A STINGING CONDEMNA TION. BUT IF GOD IS IN THE GALLERY, IF THE MARTYRS ARE IN THE GALLERY, IF IN THAT CROWEED GALLERY IS THE FACE OF A LOVED ONE, THEN WE SHOULD PLAY TO THE GALLERY. IT IS THEIR APPLAUSE, THEIR APPROVAL WE SEEK. THEY ARE WATCHING ANXIOUSLY.

~ TO PLAY THE KIND OF GAME THAT WILL "IN THEIR J:J APPROVAL, MEANS SELF-DISCIPLINE . WITHOUT SELF-~-' DISCIPLINE YOU COULD NOT MAKE YOURSELF FIT FOR ~j THE KINGDOM OF SPORT; AND WITHOUT IT YOU CANNOT ~ .BECOME FIT FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD. AND TO PLAY ·~ THIS KIND OF A GAME MAY MEAN A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF J\' • \1 e,; ' J1 LONELINESS. JESUS WHO WAS THE ONLY ONE HO PLAY-

f.M1y ED THIS GAME WITHOUT EVER TURNING BACK, FOUND

Page 11: WHEREFORE, SEEING WE ALSO ARE COMPASSED … THE GAME.pdf · hebrews 12:1-2 "playing the game ... of his being to win the coveted prize. ... is made to run on tracks and if it remains

Further, do let us reminLl ourselve<; that standing on the tonchline and watching tbc game played is not playing the gmuc. "FOR WINSTON " This apt quotation from Abraham Lincoln, which now hangs in Winston Churchill's study at Chartwell, was a 70th-birthday gift from President Roosevelt. The inscription, dated Nov. 30, 1944, bespeaks the warmth of their great friendship: "For Winston on his Birthday. I would go even to Teheran to be with him again."

SERMON- "PLAYING THE GAME" Rev. Fred Clarke, Fremont Street Methodist Church

HYMN No. 278

1. Lead on, 0 King Eternal, The day of march has come;

Hence-forth in fields of conquest Thy tents shall be our home:

Thro' days of preparation Thy grace has made us strong,

And now, 0 King Eternal, We lift our battle song.

2. Lead on, 0 King Eternal, 'Til sin's fierce war shall cease,

And Holiness shall whisper The sweet Amen of Peace:

For not with swords loud clashing, Nor roll of stirring drums;

With deeds of love and mercy, The heav'nly kingdom comes.

3. Lead on, 0 King Eternal, We follow not with fears,

For gladness breaks like morning Where'er Thy face appears;

Thy cross is lifted o'er us; We journey in its light;

The crown awaits the conquest: Lead on, 0 God of might.

Amen

CALL TO WORSHIP (The people seated)

HYMN No. 489 (The people standing)

1. My country 'tis of thee, Sweet land of Liberty,

Of thee I sing: Land where my fathers died,

Land of the pilgrims' pride, From every mountain side

Let freedom ring!

2. My native country, thee, Land of the noble free,

Thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills,

Thy woods and templed. hills; My heart with rapture thrills,

Like that above.

3. Let music swelJ .the breeze, And ring from· all the trees

Sweet freedom's song: Let mortal tongues awake;

Let all that breathe partake; Let rocks their silence break,

The sound prolong.

4. Our fathers' God, to thee, Author of Liberty,

To thee we sing: Long may our land be bright

With freedom's holy light; Protect us by Thy might,

Great God, our King. Amen

INVOCATION (The people seated)

PRAYER FOR THE SCHOOL (To be said by all)

Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, let Thy continual benediction rest upon our school. Give Thy Holy Spirit to all who learn within its walls or have gone out from it into the world, that they may grow from strength to strength in Thy service. Keep them this day and always, we pray Thee, from harm and sin; supply all their needs of body and soul, and guide their feet into the ways of peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

LORD'S PRAYER (To be said by all)

RESPONSIVE READING

THE PATH OF WISDOM

Minister:

My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

People: Let them not depart from thine eyes,- keep them in the midst of thine heart. •

For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh .

Keep thy heart with all diligence,for out of it are the issues of life.

Put away from thee a deceitful mouth and perverse lips put far from thee.

Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

GLORIA PATRI (To be sung by all)

*

Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

Turn not to the right hand nor to the left,- remove thy foot from evil.

My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart :

So shalt thou find favor and good understanding in the sight of God and man .

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.

PRESENTATION OF OFFERINGS

HYMN No. 178

L Spirit of Life, in this new dawn, Give us the faith that follows on,

Letting Thine all pervading power Fulfill the dream of this high

hour.

2. Spirit Creative, give us light, Lifting the raveled mists of night;

Touch Thou our dust with spirit hand

And make us souls that understand.

3. Spirit Redeeming, give us grace When crucified to seek Thy face;

To read forgiveness in Thine eyes Today with Thee in Paradise.

4. Spirit Consoling, let us find Thy hand when sorrows leave us

blind; In the gray valley, let us hear

Thy silent voice: "Lo, I am near".

5. Spirit of Love, at evening time, When weary feet refuse to climb,

Give us Thy vision, eyes that see, Beyond the dark, the dawn and Thee.

Amen
