WHERE YOU WILL GO ...
EDITOR'S NOTE
Making this yearbook has been quite a chore for the four people who compiled the
greater part after the year's end . At times [ was almost convinced by observers to let
the project rest, considering what little immediate value it contained for any of us, or
even the reader, for that matter . Certainly the publisher profits greatly from th is book.
But for us , it is simply a collection of pleasant memories which often become unpleasant
attic junk, or awful pictures of what "you" looked like years ago, or the object of ill
feelings because the editor's friends are the only people in it . Perhaps I am being too
cynical; however , I sincerely submit that those in our "clique" were among the few who
attempted to infuse a spirit of action and, if you will, intellectual life .into the college
year . And, to quote the assistant editor, "It is very difficult to take pictures of people
who aren 't there"! Furthermore , our operation was large ly based at the library building
which implies that the other locations received comparatively little attention.
Having had no previous experience in producing yearbooks, we have made some quite
apparent mistakes . However , I think we have compensated for them with our creativity
in other areas . Here is "Quo Vadis 1970 " . We will only discover "where we are going"
by exploring the unknown --this book.
Yours,
Kieran Lang
GRANDE PRAIRIE COLLEGE PRESIDENT
DR. H.N. ANDERSON
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
To the Student Body of 1969 - '70
This year marked the first time that College students were accorded by law the
responsibility for the conduct of their own affairs, although the college faculty and ad
ministration has from the outset attempted, I think, to give the students the maximum
degree of self government possible. There has been an attempt this year to formally in
volve students in some of the key committees related to the development of college policy.
There are continuing problems in developing an institution which can adequately
balance the interests of the general public , the governing board, the faculty and adminis
tration, as well as students . The essential elements which will make it possible to work
out suitable arrangements, is a fair measure of mutual respect and good will. I believe
we have these prime ingredients at this college , and that we have good prospects for
developing a quality post - secondary institution , and one which is sensitive to the diverse
elements which make up the college community.
It is axiomatic that the impression, and recollections which students will have of the
past academic year will be as varied as the students themselves, and as the experiences
they shared. It is the hope of all of the faculty that, on reflection, you will find that the
past academic year made a permanent contribution to your personal development.

THE ENGINEERS'
GREATEST CHALLENGE
The group closed the gap between misunderstand ing and communication and brought out those responses so necessary in interpersonal relationships . It provided an insight into the human personal ity and a llowed us to know a fe\, people to a greater degree than we could have known them under so-called s tandard conditions .
It was one of the most invaluable experiences to be had . To those who were courageous enough to en counter, our thanks; to those unable to participate, for one reason or another, our sympathies .

VALEDICTORY ADDRESS
I suppose one should consider it an inestimable honor to be chosen to give a valedictory address. Although I was secretly flattered, I actually believe that in many ways it is instead, a brutish task. Primarily because a valedictorian must be so prudent, he must satisfy so many different people at once, to avoid the criticism, on the one hand, from the adult generation, who might resent his wandering too far from the traditional formula of a farewell speech; and on the other, and perhaps more permanently damaging, from his peers , who would readily labe l him a sycophant for producin~ a euphemistic tirade in a plan A , B, or C type speech that is s o common. "Te ll us what you think, they urge . "Be honest, be sincere , be yourself; if you feel like telling someone to--go to hell--, say it in those words . 11 I agree heartily that people must display sincerity within their own unique persons before they can communicate anything of value . However , I a lso believe that one can be sincere without being offensive , and must , by the very virtue of the democratic principles which most of us do, in fact , cherish , be respectful of the other man's opinion and develop the art of listening . Today's generation gap is partially the product of just s uch unwillingness to acknowledge the other party 1s credits . Granted , the reasoning mind tells us that we would be , in effect , quite helpless or, at least, retarded in growth without the invaluable assistance of our parents I e xperie nc e to guide us. However, the society they have helped to evolve is in many ways corrupt, and polluted with follies which the young perceive as a n unnecessary menace to the future world , if there is to be one. I think it is not presumptuous or naive to assume that man is constantly , if unconscious ly, s triving for a Utopian world. And , then, it would be a contemptible act to conspire to s ubjugate the younger generation and their originally reformist attitudes . When I assert that the s upposed rebels of today are reformists, I could quite easily be attacked for my disillusioning spirit of optimism. And justifiably so, I sup pose , for a survey of the progress of mankind will reveal, I am s ure , that some of the greatest changes occurred when men were bitterly dissatisfied , and doubtful to an utterly pessimistic degree of the worth of some existing structure . However, while recognizing that the world would quickly stagnate were men to become completely homogeneous and uncritical, it would be an even more un pleasant place without the "Power of Positive Thinking" people.
This year has been a most confus ing but very profitable one for myself and many other people in our college . Previously, I had been r elatively untroubled by the new morality or pre- marital sex and contraception, the leftist politics of radical reform and rebellion against everything status quo. But these seven months have stripped me of my protection against that harsh reality, and left me vulnerable to a self- torment over my inability to reconcile the paradoxes and opposites of the world into a sound philosophy of life . I haven 1t even yet convinced myself that I shouldn 1t be afraid of speaking to other people. So, if I am not performing here as we 11 as I ought to be, I am only revealing my own foibles in that I am not as s uave and self -confident as my appearance might suggest. However, I do realize that I am not a predetermined static entity but a person who can shape himself to a great extent. But, more important, during these seven months, I have ventured on a metaphoric journey into the "Heart of Darkness . " I have seen the external beauty, but inner desolation of our sepulchral civilization; and I have caught a glimpse of the Hippy 's retreat to the jungle, to that primordial existence , perhaps of irresponsibility, but also of Serenity, Tranquillity, and Peace. I suppose in several decades one might refer to our era as the Stoned Age. Nevertheless, for all the vices the young possess , I think, they must still be admired for their endeavours to find the truth, and for their encouragingly altruistic actions . Today's youth is , I believe, more mature than those of previous generations , because a g reater ratio is sincerely concerned about, and active in, solv ing the problems to be expected in a complex socie ty. Whatever , our college will only progress favorably when there is mutual understanding and respect between administration, staff and students. For , without either , it is not a college .
To observe some of the etiquette of these ceremonies , I will pass on good wishes to the Business Education and College Preparatory students whose graduation cE:,remonies these really are . And perhaps we could all ponder a thought belonging to E rnest Hemingway: ' 'Il faut d 'abord durer ! - One must, above all, endure!" I am confident that we will.

STUDENT COUNCIL
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
There has always been conflict between youth, usually students, and the existing power hierarchy. This conflict is as natural a process as spring encroaching on winter and then proceeding through the seasonal transitions untilit is winter itself.
Students , in their determination, have gone even to the extent of violence in order to have the views they consider so important presented before the 'plodding, straightlaced establishment '. The system, in return, dismisses their opinions as impetuous and naive. However , the elder generation is being forced to admit that youth docs have a fresh ap proach as yet untainted by the 'old way of doing things '. But youth, on the other hand, can benefit from the years of experience offered by those who are older and perhaps, in some cases , wiser .
To be specific , new legislation in Alberta has granted student representation on the Board of Trustees , and has created a new organism called Academic Council. Academic Council, for those of you who should , but do not know , is a composite body of members from : the Board , teachers , and students . It concerns itself with issues of the college community as a whole . It is a place where members of the college community may speak on equal footing .
These new considerations given to students are hard come - by and should not be wasted . The prime enemy of the student movement throughout history , has been apathy. There was clear evidence of apathy in our own college. [t nearly took coercion to raise enough people from the student association to make up and maintain an effective students' council. A plague of resignations from council put an unfair workload on those who remained. But even the extra work would not have been so bad , had not the student executive been disillusioned by the usual feeble response to their efforts from the student association. The problems we had certainly were not a phenomenon of our own campus . Across Canada, new positions are being opened in the system for the student. These places are not being f i lled . Is this the anticipated sigh that students are not sincere in their proposals? Do they lack the guts and resolution needed to carry out their will? Are the untiring efforts of millions of student activities throughout history to fall by the wayside when they are on the verge of culmination, just because we are too lazy to follow through?
It is true that though the system has opened for us , we certainly will not fit into it e lse there would never have been the confrontation in the first place . But, it has modified enough to accept us, and now that we are in , we can begin reconstruction .
Let us not let an influence that is or iginal and uncorrupted be lost from the decisions that shape our lives . Nor let us develop the bad habit of not caring that limits our parents' control of thei r own fate .
Get involved . Please.
Wishing you the best of luck, Cliff Turner
