A Vocation View (Fifth Sunday of Easter)

Today we celebrate the sixth Sunday of Easter. Jesus, in today’s gospel, says, "Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come and make our dwelling in him." And this is the good news for us today: God lives and dwells within us; God is always with us. This good news can be found through the whole bible. Here are some passages: Isiah 7:14 (Matthew 1:23): Therefore, the Lord Himself shall give a sign: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Immanuel which means God is with us.” St. John put it so beautifully this way: John 1:14, “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God, ……And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.” (John 1: 1, 4). St. Paul says, “Do you not know that you are the temple of God, that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (1 Cor. 3:16). All these passages simply remind us who we are and whose we are; - that we are the Mystical Body of Christ – we are “living stones” of the church- temples of God. For indeed, God lives and dwells within us.

Since God LIVES AND DWELLS within us, let us praise and worship Him 24/7 with our lives; let us bring Him everywhere we go and be living witnesses of the existence God. And since God LIVES AND DWELLS within us, there is no need to worry and be afraid as Jesus tells us in today’s gospel. Rather let us always put our faith and trust in God. Amen.

Gladys Maugerite Epps Cheri Gladys Maugerite Epps Cheri was born April 25, 1927, the youngest child to Emile Epps and Lillian Nicholas Epps. Her five siblings included Emma Carlson,

. Gladys attended Valena C. Jones Elementary School and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. She was wedded to Fernand J. Cheri, Jr. and had seven children: Lorena Cheri, Brigid Martin, Marvell Baudy, Bishop Fernand Cheri III, Richard Cheri, Kevin Cheri and Anicia Cheri. Most of Gladys’ life was spent as a homemaker. However, with the need to help put all the kids through Catholic school, she sought employ-ment cooking for the Sisters of the Holy Family and in the cafeteria at St. Mary’s Academy.

Gladys is a faithful, dues paying member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Saint Peter Claver and the Ladies Sodality of Epiphany Catholic Church, her original parish . She remains active as a member of the Our Lady Star of the Sea Choir and the Archdiocese of New Orleans Gospel Choir. It is believed and often promulgated that parents are the first and primary educators of faith for children. That is not better exemplified than in the person of Gladys Cheri, whose strong faith has

been instrumental in raising seven children actively involved in the Catholic Church. We honor Gladys as she continues to demonstrate to us all the importance of active service in the kingdom of God, a mother of the Church.
