Organizers of an annualobservance at the MooreCounty Veterans Memorial inCarthage say they are“thrilled” about all of theevents planned during a spe-cial Veterans Weekend Nov. 9-11.

There’s just one problem: AVeterans Day parade plannedin downtown Southern Pinesat 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, isthe same time as the ceremo-ny at the county memorial inCarriage Oaks off U.S. 15-501.

The observance is tradition-ally held on the Saturday clos-est to Veterans Day, accord-ing to Joanne Atkins andRuby Hendricks, who aremembers of the VeteransMemorial Committee.

“We think it is great that

they are doing all of theseevents that weekend to honorthe veterans,” said Atkins, thegroup’s treasurer. “We arethrilled about that. We reallydidn’t know about it (theparade) until after it wasannounced. We’d be here forthe parade otherwise.”

Plans for the VeteransWeekend were announcedSept. 23 when the mayors ofSouthern Pines, Pinehurstand Aberdeen signed procla-mations declaring the specialweekend.

Not everyone who comes to theannual International Sardine Festivalin Aberdeen partakes in its maincourse.

“Some people don’t like sardines, but they enjoy seeing everyone,” saidJamie Boles, an Aberdeen native whotook over the reins of the festival in2008 from its founder, the late RandallMoss. “They bring their own lunchand eat it. They come to socialize.”

The 21st edition of the popular festi-val takes place Friday at AberdeenLake Park. Activities will begin at 11a.m. and conclude about 2 p.m.

Hundreds of sardine connoisseurscome back year after year.

“It is an annual tradition for somany people,” said Boles, who is alsoMoore County’s representative in theN.C. General Assembly. “They reallylook forward to coming back.”

Boles said 1,500 cans of sardines,1,000 MoonPies and 1,000 RC Colasand Cokes have been ordered.Crackers are also available.

“Last year, we ran out,” said Boles, who has been involved with the festi-val for about 12 years.

This year, everyone will get one canof sardines instead of two to helpaccommodate the demand, Boles said.

One of the highlights of the festivalis the crowning of the “SardineQueen.” The reigning queen is KayMoss, daughter of the founder,

“I have a 12-year-old and a 15-year-old, andI don’t let them hang out down there,” saidDean, owner of Cup of Flow, a coffee shop onNorth East Broad Street just blocks from thepark.

“I grew up here and hung out in that park 20years ago, and it upsets me that my kids can’thang out there,” Dean said.

Some residents and business merchantsdowntown are raising concerns about safety

following a shooting thatoccurred in the park atapproximately 7:45 p.m.Sunday.

Police say they respondedto the park at 135 SE BroadSt. after receiving a report ofa fight in progress.

Police received informa-tion that gunshots were

heard coming from the park. No victim waslocated, but police learned a short time laterthat a gunshot victim was being treated atMoore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

The victim, an 18-year-old Southern Pinesresident, refused to cooperate with the policeinvestigation. The teen was later taken to anundisclosed hospital for further treatment ofhis non-life-threatening injuries.

Police Chief Bob Temme said the incidentwas reported about 30 minutes after a policeofficer on foot patrol went through the area.

Temme described the victim as a “high-risk individual engaged in high-risk behav-ior,” but would not elaborate, citing an openinvestigation. Those with information on theincident are asked to call the criminal inves-tigations department at (910) 693-1481 or theCrime Tip Line at (910) 693-4110.

Hospital-Hoke Campus, which wasscheduled to open last week, wel-comed its first patients at 8 a.m.Monday.

The opening was delayed becausethe N.C. Department of Health &Human Services did not finish itslicensure survey until last Thursday. The survey is part of the process ofopening a hospital.

Brian Canfield, chief operatingofficer at Moore Regional, called theopening “a monumental event forboth FirstHealth and Hoke County”because it is the county’s first hospi-tal.

“We are extremely grateful for thecommunity’s support,” Canfield said.“We are looking forward to servingthe residents of Hoke County formany more years to come.”

FirstHealth and Cape Fear ValleyHealth System engaged in a lengthybattle over which system would con-struct a hospital in Hoke Countybefore settling the dispute in April2012.

Last November, FirstHealthreceived conditional approval fromthe state to add 28 beds to its originaleight and a second operating room tothe Hoke Campus. But Cape Fearappealed the decision.

The matter will go before the N.C.Office of Administrative Hearings ifthe two sides cannot reach resolu-tion.

FirstHealth, the largest employerin Moore County, hosted a grandopening for its $34.1 million HokeCampus on Sept. 22 and expected toopen the doors 10 days later. But theopening was delayed because thestate had not finished the survey.

The Hoke Campus is located onU.S. 401 east of Raeford. Adjoiningthe hospital is a 20,000-square-footmedical office that houses cardiolo-gy services, internal medicine and awound care center.

Cape Fear Valley plans to investmore than $100 million at its 60-acresite on U.S. 401, which is located lessthan three miles from the HokeCampus. The first phase — an outpa-tient center called Health PavilionHoke — is under construction.

The official design for a memorial tohonor fallen emergency workers in MooreCounty has been approved and released bythe architectural firm involved.

Robert Hayter, of the Hayter Firm, designed the Moore County Public SafetyMemorial, which is to be placed at SandhillsCommunity College between Logan andCausey halls.

Promoters call the school a “neutral”location that frees the memorial, designedto represent all first responders in thecounty who made the ultimate sacrifice, from association with any particular townor department. EMS personnel, police andfirefighters undergo part of their trainingon the college campus.

Hayter said the design is “in union” withthe materials that make up the buildings oncampus.

“It consists of a brick and concrete area, with the memorial in granite,” Hayter saidin a previous interview. “As a memorial itencompasses a passive assembly area inwhich the recognition of those who are hon-

ored is integrated. It is not iconic, but morelike the Vietnam Veterans Memorial thanthe Washington Monument. In other words,it is subtle.”

A number of residents of ClarendonGardens in Pinehurst are up in arms overthe possibility of a family care home forsenior citizens being located in their neigh-borhood.

A local company called Aging ResourceConnections sent a letter of intent to thehomeowners association earlier this monthabout its plans to operate a home at 75 GrayFox Run for four to six older adults whoneed some assistance with daily living. Itwould have live-in staff.

Some of the neighboring property ownershave expressed concerns that it wouldlower the value of their homes, and thatincreased traffic on the narrow streetsfrom transport vans carrying occupants ofthe home to medical appointments and

other activities would be disruptive. The home also backs up to the train

tracks, and the noise from train horns could

The home also backs up to the train

tracks, and the noise from train horns could

be unsettling for the older residents, neigh-bors say.

“I am not happy about this at all,” said

Linda Clack-Skelley, who lives at 50 GrayFox Run. “I am not a bad person. I just don’tthink this is the right place for it. It’s anightmare for us because there is nothingwe can do about it.
