Where can I access information if the power goes out? December’s ice storm left many County residents without power for several days. In the event of a power outage, the best place to access information is your local radio station, if you don’t have access to a smartphone. The County contacts local radio stations with closure and warming centre information. The following radio stations should be monitored for important updates: • 92.9 The Grand (Centre Wellington) • 1460 CJOY/Magic 106 (South Wellington) • 93.7 Country 93 (Wellington North) • AM 920 (Wellington North) • 88.1 Headwaters New Mix (Erin) • 94.5 CKNX The Bull (Minto, Mapleton) The County will also provide updates on www.wellington.ca and on the County’s official emergency twitter feed - @wellingtncounty as necessary. Adding a battery operated radio to your 72 hour emergency kit is a great idea. Alternatively, you can listen to these stations, on the hour, using your car radio for important updates. Flooding A flood occurs when water in a river rises and overflows spilling onto the land beside it. In some cases flooding is minor, but emergencies result when flood waters threaten property and lives. Flood Facts • Floods can occur anytime throughout the year. • Ice jams, rapid winter snow melt, thunderstorms and heavy rains can cause flooding; sometimes minor and other times flooding large areas. Flood Forecasting and Warnings Conservation Authorities in Ontario are responsible for monitoring water levels in rivers and streams in order to predict flooding. The Conservation Authority is responsible for issuing flood warning messages. There are three levels of warning messages Watershed conditions statement: Issued when river and channel conditions exist. There are two categories of statements: Water Safety: High flows, unsafe banks, melting ice or other factors have made watercourses dangerous for recreational users but flooding is not expected. Flood Outlook: Early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecasts calling for heavy rain, snow melt, high winds or other conditions that could result in high runoff or ice jams or lakeshore flooding. Flood Watch: Flooding is possible. Municipalities and individuals should prepare. Flood Warning: Flooding is occurring or is about to occur. Municipalities and individuals should take action to deal with flood conditions. This may include road closures and evacuations.
