More than a few years ago, surveillance cameras made the transition from analog systems to IP connected cameras in a network-based system. This evolution made for easier installations, simplified operations, and seamless growth expansions for the end user customers. It also unleashed a giant wave of opportunity for network integrators and technology resellers. And while audio solutions were slow to follow video’s lead, they are now shedding their analog roots and transitioning to join the network as standard IoT devices. With these new opportunities, you can now offer your new and existing customers more options and benefits than ever before.

IT’S NOT JUST AUDIO. IT’S INTELLIGENT AUDIO.

If you think today’s audio solutions are like the traditional 70v and 24v systems that have been around for years, think again. These antiquated systems are completely compartmentalized and use high-maintenance and costly analog technologies that require a dedicated rack, cooling systems, various components, and analog wiring that needs to be run carefully to avoid interference and cross

talk. These factors lead to high installation and maintenance costs.

Today’s network audio systems provide an all-in-one, flexible, scalable, easy to manage, monitor, and install solution. In fact, if your customers are using network video, the infrastructure is already in place for network audio. Network audio is easier than ever to add on to projects and bring many benefits and opportunities to your customers, more specifically in applications of security, public address, and music.

SECURITY

A network audio system adds immediate deterrence value and is the perfect addition to a video-based security installation. For example: imagine, a camera detects a potential intruder climbing a property fence. The camera can alert a security guard who can then provide a recorded or live announcement warning to the intruder using the network horn speaker. More often than not, this type of warning is sufficient in deterring unwanted activity, eliminating the need for additional security measures.

PUBLIC ADDRESS

A network audio system answers the need for different kinds of informative messages and updates in environments like schools, retail stores, hotels, and other public buildings. For example, you can make live announcements calling someone to a specific area (such as a colleague to the clothing department) or you can program scheduled announcements throughout the day (such as break time, daily specials). Today’s network audio solutions are cost effective and make it easier than ever to broadcast to single or multiple zones.

MUSIC

The right music helps define your customers’ image and creates an improved customer experience. Network audio solutions provide quality sound along with easier management. With the option of both central or local management, users can easily manage numerous devices, scheduling, music sources, playlists, and more all from a single, intuitive interface.

MAKING THE MOST OF SMART AUDIO TECHNOLOGY

Axis Communications is a leader in the network audio space and is in tune with challenges facing resellers as well as end user customers when it comes to making the switch from analog to IP. Chris Wildfoerster, Business Development Manager, Audio Solutions, Axis Communications, Inc., has noticed significant opportunity in education and shared where the challenges/opportunities lie.

“Typical intercom systems utilize analog and some derivative of IP for communications, which requires a significant amount of space for a dedicated rack.” he says. “Axis audio speakers and horns are an all-in-one solution that doesn’t require a dedicated rack and can function individually or collectively to create the perfect solution that can be easily scaled in the future. Network audio by Axis simplifies installation with just a PoE network connection that can even

interface with existing analog intercom systems. These solutions can also integrate with SIP and VoIP phone systems offering added flexibility.”

Mr. Wildfoerster also noted retail, hospitality, warehousing, corporate and healthcare as key growth verticals. He noted that for healthcare, you can easily communicate with individual patient rooms or zones. He also pointed out that Axis offers a complete suite of support tools available to all integrators regardless of their audio background or experience.

“Axis offers online trainings, webinars, and resources to better understand the end user customers, Axis offerings, and how to make the most of audio network solutions. The Axis Academy also offers hands-on, in-classroom trainings offering the opportunity to become an Axis Certified Professional, an industry-recognized certification, in network video.”

He wrapped up with an invitation to all who want to take advantage of the audio network evolution. “Starting in early 2019, Axis will begin offering a specialized course called Essentials of Axis Network Audio Systems. This course, coming to cities around the country, cover all aspects of network audio from sales and business development to system design and installation / configuration and are designed to get Axis audio products in your hands.”

Dear IP Man:It seems like my customers are looking to add every device to their network these days, but I’m a little cautious about taking that leap. What do I need to know before adding Internet of Things solutions to my list of offerings?

- Considering Things

Dear Considering:The Internet of Things, or IOT, has been a buzz word for some time. It’s not the next big thing, it’s “the” thing, and will connect everyone to everything. At ScanSource, we’ve been talking about IOT for several years now, strategizing and teaching resellers about the effect it will have on their customers. Our CTO, Greg Dixon, highlighted five key reasons why resellers should consider adding IOT solutions to their portfolio...

IOT is all about connectivity. By using sensors and beacons, IOT connects non-computing devices, like a commercial icemaker, to the Internet. As a result, the icemaker can “listen” to The Weather Channel and generate more ice on warmer days and less ice on colder days. In turn, the icemaker now becomes a smart device and becomes more energy efficient. Look for any opportunities to connect sensors or beacons to a non-computing device and turn a “dumb” device into a “smart” one.

It’s outcome driven. Think of IOT as outcome-as-a-service. It allows businesses to produce less waste, less cost, and incur

less risk. Or perhaps, they can become more compliant, more efficient, or more profitable. The end user, in conjunction with the reseller, is able to plan better and predict these outcomes when implementing their technology solutions. The results become measurable outcomes and generate true ROI.

It’s current yet innovative. IOT is a combination of edge hardware, cloud services, and managed services. Therefore, as most resellers have some type of cloud offering (or are moving toward one), combined with managed services, those who are integrating IOT solutions into their product offerings will continue to reflect the natural progression of technology.

IOT can be managed remotely. Devices, platforms, infrastructure, data, and user interfaces can all be managed remotely from a dashboard that provides Business Intelligence to the end customer. Further, the dashboard alerts the reseller to maintenance needs and other information, providing a managed service agreement.

The opportunities are endless. We’ll never know exactly how many devices, applications, and solutions can be connected, but IOT is highly diversified and allows for the potential of many billions of devices to be connected. These opportunities translate to endless recurring revenue opportunities for the reseller.

Sincerely, ScanSource’s “IP Man”

THE New Face of IT IS IN THE CLOUD

ScanSource Focus SPRING 2019 | 65 | ScanSource Focus SPRING 2019

As the role of IT continues to evolve into a more interdisciplinary field, the need for upskilling its employees grows. Just as workers across the enterprise must become more tech-savvy, workers in the IT department must understand the nuances of marketing. CIOs must increasingly hire employees with business acumen, not just good technology support skills. Enterprises will need to adjust in response to a changing talent ecosystem.

Changes to the physical footprint of today’s businesses are also having an impact to how an IT team responds to network challenges. Take a typical retailer, for example. They may have a central headquarters where network management takes place, as well as a number of distributed retail locations where IT resources are scarce. Responding to user connectivity issues is less of a challenge when they are in the main office. However, if an issue comes up in one of their retail outlets, many times it requires an onsite visit to build a diagnosis and resolution plan.

It’s not just IT departments that are having to adapt. Technology manufacturers are expanding their offerings and focusing on cloud-based solutions to meet the market demand. They’re also having to deal with IT’s changing role and out-of-date technology that just won’t go away.

Cherie Martin, Senior Solutions Marketing Manager for Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company, said it’s their customer pain points that drive the innovation behind Aruba Central, their cloud-based network management platform.

“Organizationally, our customer’s IT departments are evolving. They need to balance the workload required to offer new business tools with the day-to-day activities of running the network. On average, IT budgets are staying fairly flat relative to the growth of the business, and IT teams are trying to accomplish more with existing resources and skill sets,” she says.

“Unfortunately,” she continues, “existing legacy network management tools do not give IT admins the visibility and control needed to easily maintain the network or simplify chasing down issues in real time. To solve this, Aruba has developed easy-to-use configuration, visibility, and reporting features within Aruba Central that makes life for the IT staff much easier and delivers consistently amazing experiences for both IT admins and end users.”

There is no on-premises hardware or software to maintain. Updates are provided on a regular basis that enhances the visuals and workflows within the GUI. As your network grows, that are no additional appliances to add, power on, cool and put under management. Key features like Aruba Clarity provide advanced client connectivity data that lets you see if your users are experiencing DHCP, authentication, or Wi-Fi issues. This helps ease the burden brought on by all of IT’s new responsibilities. It not only tells you that an issue occurred in one stage of the connection process, but it also tells you exactly why. It is a powerful tool when you can see that DHCP is getting delayed between a specific server and client due to transaction retries for a specific MAC ID on a specific SSID based on specific AP model and client type.

Changes in the way IT must operate is a perfect opportunity for partners to establish themselves in an advisory and/or thought leadership capacity with their customers. Those partners tend to yield the most success at selling cloud-based solutions. Offering your customers a business-class networking features and management that is easy to use and just works is a great way to start the conversation and build confidence.

These are exciting times we live in. It seems like every day there are new technologies being introduced that

offer businesses the opportunity to improve processes, save money, and beat the competition. Consequently, as businesses adopt these new technologies and start their own digital transformation, fundamental shifts in the way they operate begin as well. Today’s workplaces and schools are embracing mobility which lets users be more agile when it comes to where and how they get their jobs done. And as employees create change across all levels of an organization, the new face of IT defies boundaries.

It seems as though the lines that once defined the IT department are continually blurring. IT workers aren’t just facilitating business goals; they’re driving change at an organizational level. IT’s role has expand to impact customer service, sales, and even business strategies. As a result, organizations are increasingly turning IT into a driving force in all aspects of business.

A major driver in this latest evolution is the host of new Internet of Things devices joining the network that may have not existed just 12 months ago. They have received a lot of attention because of the cost and performance efficiencies that they offer, as well as the security holes that they can open up. Examples of where they help includes temperature sensors for monitoring refrigeration units, motion detectors for managing a buildings lighting, and surveillance video cameras for displaying and recording daily activity.

Rarely – if ever – has an end user customer ever uttered the words “I want to pay the maximum to get the minimum.” It just doesn’t happen. And even though the idea that each wants to pay the least to get the most, most feel the need to speak these words out loud, or at least some semblance of these words to get the idea across. In the case of government customers, however, it’s not just their own views they are relating. For them, the idea to get the most for the least is mandated in triplicate from on high and not open for discussion.

The good news is, when it comes to selling government (and other cost-conscious customers) on video surveillance solutions, often times the best solution is also the most

cost-conscious solution, thanks to multi-sensor technology.

GET THE FULL PICTURE

Multi-sensor cameras are purpose-built for capturing images around or down the entire length of corridors and a full 360° view of exterior locations. The ability for a single camera to cover the same area as multiple cameras creates cost efficiencies for end users. A single multi-sensor unit is capable of providing the same detailed coverage for four separate views.

When installed on the exterior of a building, for example, a multi-sensor camera can be configured to provide 270° (three sensors at

90° each), while also focusing on an entrance directly below the camera. Another ideal use would be a parking lot, where a multi-sensor can be installed at the center to provide 180°, 270°, or 360° coverage of the entire area. Multiple views. Single camera. Full coverage.

MAXIMUM COVERAGE FOR A MINIMUM COST

Because a single multi-sensor camera can provide the same coverage as multiple single-sensor cameras, surveillance systems can often be designed with fewer cameras to cover the entire area of interest. As while lower camera counts translate into lower equipment costs, that cost savings is only the beginning. Fewer cameras also mean fewer VMS licenses, lower installation costs, fewer network switches, and a fraction of the long-term cost of maintaining multiple cameras.

In the case of multi-sensor cameras, the old adage of “you get what you pay for” does not apply. In fact, you end up getting much more than you pay for. For you see, on its own, each megapixel sensor allows a camera to view large areas and capture everything within that field of view in high resolution without the need for mechanical panning, tilting, or zooming. Within a multi-sensor camera, this benefit is multiplied, as each individual sensor can provide the same detailed coverage as a single sensor, delivering even greater value beyond the cost savings of a lower camera count. Any customer with a big space to cover can benefit from multi-sensor technology including city streets, traffic intersections, airports, schools, malls, parking lots, and casinos.

CLEANING UP THE CLUTTER

Paul Kong, CTO, Hanwha Techwin America, points out a third advantage in addition to the lower costs and greater coverage of multi-sensor

MAKING THE MOST WITH THE LEAST IN

CITY SURVEILLANCE

technology: ease of operation. “Because multi-sensor cameras can easily integrate with VMS, operators have access to enhanced views that allow them to easily see and better comprehend what is happening,” he says. “Rather than forcing operators to try to make sense of feeds from several cameras, multi-sensor cameras can be configured to arrange all of their fields of view as if they were a single feed from a single camera. As a result, they can make more informed decisions on the best response quickly and effectively.”

He also notes that the need in the market for multi-sensor technology continues to increase. And that Hanwha Techwin continues to innovate and design products to offer specific advantages, such as:

• High frame rates per sensor: 60fps @ 2MP and 30fps @ 5MP while WDR is on

• Built-in video analytics

• Modular design multi-sensor that you can mix and match between resolution and lenses on one camera

• One of the longest ranges for a motorized lens in a multi-sensor

• Panoramic cameras that can switch between 180º and 220º

At the end of the day, it’s not a complicated equation for your customers, whether they be big government, small government, big business, or small business. If they have large areas that requires video surveillance, multi-sensor technology provides the biggest bang for their buck. Fuller coverage with fewer cameras and ease of operation. It not only gets the job done, it helps you get a foot in the door as well.

In a recent report, a majority of admissions directors say they were very concerned about meeting their school’s enrollment goals for the coming 2019 academic year. Just 38 percent met their enrollment goals by the traditional May 1 end of the admission period, and less than half did so by June 1.*

What the report doesn’t say is that the incoming freshman class has come of age alongside smart phones and smart devices and that they not only want, but expect, to engage in campus life digitally— which is enabled through secure, strong connections throughout their dorms, within the classrooms, on the quad… well, you get the picture. And that’s just for starters. As you and your university customers prepare to welcome this bright band of future leaders to their hallowed halls this coming autumn, let’s take a look at what defines a Smart Campus these days.

WHAT, EXACTLY, MAKES A CAMPUS “SMART?”

A Smart Campus starts with ubiquitous, reliable wired and wireless connectivity—indoors and out. That’s the foundation. However, while that kind of connectivity may once have been a goal in itself for many colleges or universities, it’s just the beginning of a Smart Campus. Now add Internet of Things (IoT) networks (sensors, access technologies, gateways) to put campus infrastructure on the IP network, such as outdoor lighting, building lighting/heating/cooling/power systems, security surveillance and physical access systems, parking facilities and more.

Think of the Smart Campus as the intersection between Smart Homes and Smart Cities—linking devices, applications, and people to enable new experiences or services and improving operational efficiency through automation and/or integrating disparate systems. When all the people, devices, and applications on campus share a common technology infrastructure, they can interact with each other to enable experiences and efficiencies that just weren’t possible before.

The engine of the Smart Campus is the IoT Controller. When you detect something, do something. One example is real-time building occupancy. When someone walks into a building after hours (e.g., late night at the computer lab) the system can automatically snap on the lights, the heat, and prioritize local CCTV camera feed. Another example: you can track asset utilization and share the availability of learning spaces in the library.

SMART CAMPUSES EVOLVE THE WAY STUDENTS LEARN

When colleges connect sensors, building systems, and other devices (once again, over the same common infrastructure that enables digital learning models and flexible workspaces), they can begin to collect data from a variety of sources across the campus. All of that data can be collected, stored, accessed, and used by campus operations teams to pursue the common goals of IoT implementations: reducing energy consumption and power costs, refining services on campus to make them more convenient and effective, and more.

Additionally, those data and analytics can be collected and integrated into curricula data objects for instructional use. Students in a variety of courses—public policy, statistics, environmental studies, psychology, mathematics, computer science—now have a wealth of real-world data, drawn from their own campus environment, to study and apply to their projects. For example, ‘How can you reduce energy usage on campus by 20%?’ or ‘How can you reduce the average parking time from 20 to 15 minutes on a Tuesday morning?’ Suddenly, course work that used to be conducted largely in the abstract has become interesting and engaging – and that’s the key to engaging Millennials and Digital Natives.

IS A SMART CAMPUS A “SAFE” CAMPUS?

As innovative institutions embrace IoT technologies, they’re finding that the same platform that supports digital learning and reduces operational expenses

can enable applications that make campuses safer and more secure for everyone living, learning or working there.

For example, by adopting smart lighting for improved energy efficiency, IT is connecting outdoor LED lighting to their networks. This likely requires ladder or lift access to pole tops to connect the lights. In so doing, many IT teams take the opportunity to add outdoor Wi-Fi and surveillance cameras which run off the Power-over-Ethernet (POE) provided by the Wi-Fi access point.

By integrating brighter lighting controlled by motion sensors or remote network control, combined with CCTV cameras while extending connectivity with Wi-Fi, this is a highly efficient way of achieving a more secure Smart Campus. Additionally, the following is an example of how a Smart Campus could respond to someone trying to break into a residence hall at night…

1. Someone finds a student ID on the floor (or lifts from a backpack or purse)

2. Said person taps that ID on a digital door lock multiple times, or taps on each door along the hallway, hoping to gain access

3. Wi-Fi locks report activity to IoT controller and door lock systems, which meets trigger criteria indicating an attempt at entry without proper authorization

4. Connected lights snap on illuminating the entryway

5. Local CCTV cameras automatically pan/tilt/zoom and capture video; VMS prioritizes feed

6. If the intruder is a student or employee with a smart campus ID card, the system immediately recognizes who it is

7. An alert is sent to campus security with all the relevant information and a real-time video feed so they can respond appropriately

THE BIG QUESTION: HOW TO GET STARTED TRANSFORMING INTO A SMART CAMPUS?

This is a particularly interesting and challenging question. For help with the answer, we turned to our friends at Ruckus Networks, who are dialed in on creating and maintaining Smart Campuses. They suggest determining what your Smart Campus priorities are (student experience, learning, safety, or operational efficiency like green initiatives) and how these align with your University vision or technology plan, then working back to determine steps to achieve this starting

now. Start with reliable and pervasive wired and wireless networks. Add to this an IoT access network to gather campus data for analysis of energy use, traffic, safety, and more.

Richard Nedwich, Director of Education at Ruckus gets more specific. “I suggest step one is the security management platform (onboarding, access management, policy management) to delivery two things: a common student experience for onboarding devices from legacy networks to new, as well as a common IT tool for policy management and secure onboarding. Over time, as campus IT migrates their wired and wireless networks, students experience the same onboarding process and access rights, while IT uses the same policy management for wired/wireless access. The vendors or product families may change over time, but the disruption to students and IT is minimized.”

To sum up, a Smart Campus can deliver Smart Living, Smart Learning, and Smart Security while achieving operational savings. And just like the experience being created for the students and faculty it serves, every Smart Campus project is more of a journey than a destination.
