1 When you read this, there’ll be just about 50 more days until spring. We all know that this year Spring cannot come too soon. The “Polar Vortex” made us freeze; turned our local streets into ice skating rinks; and challenged all our furnaces and pipes. We’ll not soon forget this winter. Things like the polar freeze in the mid-west, brush fires in California, floods along the Mississippi and more, however, are always reminders that we humans are not as “in control” as we think we are. The laws of nature operate by different rules of conduct and do not consider whether what happens is to our liking or not. We just have to learn to “deal with it”. Of course, the things over which humans do have control are not always well done. At least the laws of nature are consistent. The laws of humans, however, are likely to change with the wind and be dependent upon who has the power for the moment. What, then, is there upon which we may depend? Jesus taught that it is the law of love. Simply stated, that law is to love God and love one another. If we would do that, our experience of life would be one filled with joy and peace.

When you read this, there’ll be just about 50 more days until spring.

The world with its normal and natural courses (we call them disasters) is not going to change for us because it cannot nor can we make nature change. We do, however, have the power to change how we think and how we act. That, my friend, is what Valentine’s Day is about. It celebrates humankind’s ability to love and be loved. The only way that such a celebration can be truly meaningful is if each of us commits herself or himself to loving God and loving others. Sounds simple enough and it is. Don’t make it difficult. Just do it. With Love,

ALTAR COMMUNION Altar Communion in February will be offered on Sunday, February 9th since the Pastor will not be leading worship on February 2nd.

WORSHIP ON FEBRUARY 2nd On Sunday, February 2, Doug Spencer will be our guest speaker in the worship service. Doug has been a lifelong member of St. Paul’s. He has served the St. Marys Community as a School Teacher, Athletic Director, and currently is an Auglaize County Commissioner. His wife Andrea is one of our church organists. Their children are daughters Charley and Lucy and their son is Howie. Rev. Bray will be at Back Bay Mission in Mississippi on that Sunday. Our thanks to Doug for being willing to serve in the pastor’s place that Sunday.

Rev. Bray will be at Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi, during the first week of February. Back Bay Mission is a ministry of the United Church of Christ that reaches out to the homeless and downtrodden in the region

surrounding Biloxi. The ministry has placed a special emphasis on reaching out to homeless veterans in the area by providing housing and an ongoing help for them. While there, the Pastor will be involved in helping repair homes of area residents that have suffered hurricane damage.

PASTOR IN THE COMMUNITY Recently the Pastor was asked to serve on the board of the Elm Grove Cemetery. He accepted the invitation. Rev. Bray also serves on the Board of Directors of Otterbein Retirement Community here in St. Marys. In addition, he is also the current secretary of the St. Marys Ministerial Association.

Please mark Saturday, April 26th on your calendar to help. Also, mark Friday, April 25th on your calendar to do set-up. The more help we have, the easier the job and a more positive feeling our 200 plus visitors from all over Northwest Ohio will have about St. Paul’s.

Mission The Sunday School mission is in house this time and the children are trying to purchase at least 2 pew cushions. This number was chosen by the children but they are actually shooting for 3 and if that goal is achieved, Julie Speckman is throwing them a party with ice cream and cake! Go Kids! Our Fall/Winter mission was West Ohio Food Bank and a check for $200 was presented to West Ohio Food Bank during church on December 29. Youth Fund Christian Ed has established a Youth Fund where monies raised from the sale of our handmade cards, the Fall Festival Craft Show at the campground, the upcoming rummage sale, etc will be deposited. The purpose is to support the youth of our church for mission projects, National Youth Event, Winter Jam, etc., by assisting with some of the costs associated with these events. We very much need your help with the above projects as much of the work is done by just a few. This is a fund that would accept contributions from loved ones upon the death of one of our church members. Rummage Sale In conjunction with the City of St Marys garage sales we will be holding a rummage sale. Please consider keeping gently used items to donate to the Rummage Sale. Proceeds will go the Youth Fund. More details soon. Card Shop Many thanks to Kara Birt and Julie Speckman for keeping the card shop up and running. Their efforts are greatly appreciated as are those of the volunteers who help. However, we could use more

volunteers. Thank you to the congregation for their support of the card shop and let us know if there is a particular type of card you would like us to make. We have birthday, congratulations, sympathy, get well, holiday and general purpose cards for sale once a month prior to and after the church service.

Aluminum Can Recycling - You bet we CAN!

Thank you to everyone who brought and who are saving aluminum cans for the youth group. We will continue to save, collect, and recycle cans. Cans may be brought to St. Paul’s, just leave them behind the curtain under the stairs of the Creation Station door. If you have a lot of cans and would like to just take them on to recycling and donate the money, it may be just as easy once they are in your vehicle. Thank you for your support.

The Samaritan Sisters have again adopted a Valentine’s service project for St. Paul’s homebound members, nursing home residents, military and college students who live away from home!

On Sundays, January 26th, February 2nd and February 9th, a table with 41 bags decorated for Valentine’s Day will be in the sanctuary. Each bag will have the name of one of these church members.

Please bring a Valentine’s card for any or all of the 41 members, as well as candy or notes you’d like to write to specific members. (See the back of this insert for the list.) During early February, each bag will be delivered or mailed so these members who can’t join us in fellowship can enjoy reading your cards and letters and feel a part of the congregation. If any of you would enjoy distributing some of the Valentine’s bags, please take them after the church service on February 9th or please contact the church office. Thank you!

Bob Longfellow and Barb Lhamon were united in marriage in a private ceremony in their home Wednesday, January 1, 2014.

A BIG thank you to Margaret Hunter for sharing her sewing talents with the children by making Christmas stockings for them to have during the Christmas Eve Service. The children enjoyed taking them home after the service. A nice little “treasure” that the children will have from the Church for a long time to enjoy and display in their homes each Christmas! Thanks again, CE and N committee
