I cherish the moments when the sun glistens down and the Kindy children check in to the office with their wonderful stories of what they have seen on their walk. I settle in to address the work on my desk and feel lucky to work in such beautiful surrounds with people who care for each other and put in that extra effort every day. Please join us this Friday, 21 September at 11:15am for our Spring Festival on the School Oval.

7.00pm Evolution of Conscious-ness – Dawn Langman

Our Spring Festival is this Thursday 20 September. We are looking forward to sharing this festival with you as we celebrate new growth all around us. Families are invited to join us at 11.50am and please remember that all children are invited even if it is not their usual day.The Kindergarten children have been invited to the School’s Spring Festival on Friday 21 September. This will be part of the children’s normal day at Kindergarten. The day is often very sunny, so please pack a sun hat and drink bottle. At this time of year when we are still experiencing chilly mornings and enjoying warm sunny afternoons, please ensure your child has both a warm hat and a sun hat in their bags.A reminder that dolls’ week is during the last week of term, beginning Monday 24 September. Children are invited to bring their doll to kindergarten.

Now that we have our Kindergarten chooks please keep an eye on the notice board for a roster to help care for them over the spring holidays. This will involve popping into kindy and checking that there is food and water. There might also be some eggs waiting for you to take home.Last week Louise Schnitzhofer (our visiting anthroposophical homeopath) visited our kindergarten to observe the older children. Louise works with the teachers to assist in building a picture of each child that is then shared as the children move to class one. During the first weeks of next term the older children will also spend time with the learning support team playing games and participating in various activities. The results of this are also used to add to the picture of each child.

The Banksia Rose children have been asked to “lend a hand” to help the earth. This picture shows all the hands that offered to help in many ways, from caring for our plants and animals down at Bush Kindy, gardening, planting, looking after the skinks and spiders they find; playing in the environment they learn to care for it. Working in their own gardens at home by providing feeders for bees, planting flowers and creating homes for birds with their families also helps.

We reused cardboard that fruit and vegetables were delivered to our school in to create the hands and we put the children’s activities and thoughts of what they are doing to help the Earth on the hands. This is on display on the Banksia Rose verandah.Eventually we will shred the hands and pulp up to make paper for weed matting to be used in our Kindy garden, thus returning the cardboard to the earth.

BUSH KINDYAt Bush Kindy the children often add lavendar to our hand wash water. It mixes with the plant based liquid handwash, (that we add and the warm water) creating a delightful smell and aesthetic pleasure to our typical hand wash routine.

As part of our Zoology Main Lesson block each student chose an animal to do a project on.The children took up the challenge with great enthusiasm and they all made a great effort. They have enjoyed presenting their projects to follow classmates. At present we are studying that very special branch of mammals – the Australian Marsupials. We have also been practising our Spring pole dances for the Spring Festival this week and the Spring Fair early next term. A good exercise in everyone ‘pulling together’ – in time with everyone else …On Monday 17 September, we had our excursion to explore a section of the Tjilbruke Dreaming Trail (from Brighton to Cape Jervis).Next term we have our class camp at the newly re-opened Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary in Mylor – a nice extension of our animal studies.

ASTRONOMYIn Class 6 we have begun our Astronomy Main Lesson where we observe the sun, moon, stars and planets. The students are keeping a daily moon calendar and creating beautiful books to record their observations. We began the Main Lesson with this simple verse …

‘Be humble or you are made of earthBe noble for you are made of stars.’

BLACK AND WHITE DRAWINGClass 6 has been working in chalk to create black and white drawings. By seeing the light and dark so clearly we then work in the space in-between to find the grey. This has also assisted the students in their Astronomy Main Lesson and moon observations.

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

In the Eyes of a Child

Cough me another lung full of dust yelled my dreamsDream me a day of freedom

My hands hold my head another moment as rainclouds of sweat I should lay

My skin ghostly white as I hollow through darknessA day I seek Christ, find a ray

Dig me a grave yelled my dreams for body and toil never part

With quivering limbs I shall work once moreSay I have an unloved heart.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAMIt was lovely to see so many Primary School students enjoying the musical, so I wanted to encourage everyone to come to the Class 10 production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ next week (Monday-Thursday 7pm in the Living Arts Centre). Several of the students who were in the musical have substantial parts in this play, and they are once again proving to be engaged and committed performers. There is so much to love and be entertained by as we enter the world of headstrong young lovers, warring fairies, mischievous sprites and diligent, ‘hard-handed men of Athens’ who are determined to put on a marvellous play for the Duke’s wedding celebrations.See you there!

Knockout Soccer

On Monday, 10 September our Class 6 / 7 boys continued their soccer adventure against a familiar opponent. For the first time ever we had an all Waldorf Semi Final as we traveled to Willunga in a play off to make the small schools final. The boys were excited about the opportunity with a “Team first” mantra being our theme throughout the competition. We had our backs up against the wall early going down 0-1 in the first 5 minutes with the home crowd spurring on Willunga. After an arm wrestle Peter managed to kick an amazing goal from basically the car park and then follows it up with a tap in from Oliver, putting us ahead 2-1 going into half time. The second half started well and we managed to score again, with Oliver and Peter combining again. The game looked to be ours but Willunga managed to score again making the game still in the balance. With a goal by Peter, the score was 4-2 and with the home crowd supporting Willunga, they scored again making it 4-3 with 10 minutes to go. Some determination from Kodi allowed Mount Barker to score one more time with 5 minutes to go but the trend of the game continued and Willunga scored once again making it 5-4. There were nervous final few minutes but

the score was unchanged. Mount Barker the victors and progressing to the final. Once again all 16 boys contributed to the result and all put the team before themselves which is a great sign of maturity. Win or lose in the final, what an amazing achievement to make the final 2 out of a total of 42 schools that started out in the competition in early May.

Fine Art

We had a glorious Spring day at the beginning of this week and the Fine Art Elective class made the most of the sunshine. They have been studying various forms of sculpture this term, finding inspiration from the past and present masters. They have already created some wonderful relief sculptures using clay and are now pouring their creative forces into three dimensional form. The students have been working in plaster and are now progressing to talc (soap stone) and limestone. It has been inspiring to see the wonderful creative forces flowing from the students as they create their pieces. If you would like to see some of their work, keep your ears and eyes out for the exhibition happening early next term.

Modern Olympics

Katherine | Bothmer Teacher

The Spring weather blessed the Class 10 Modern Olympics on Friday. The interschool event between Willunga and Mount Barker is now in its second year and it was our turn to host this time. All the participants were given the opportunity to compete in Long Jump, Wrestling, Discus, Javelin, Relay and a 5 kilometre Marathon. The day closed with a tug-of-war and the four Class 10 Bothmer Exercises on the oval with more than half of our students watching from the tiers. It is a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and create new ones from our Willunga mates.

Mount Barker Waldorf School is a community of people who support each other and where students feel cared for. We work towards making a solid connection with each other.RU OK day lights up a spark within us to continue the

conversation of caring and compassion every day.Check on your mates and remember that it’s OK to ask for help too.
