When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. Luke 9:51

Long before Arnold Schwarzenegger was governor of Califor-nia, and even before he was a famous actor, he made his name as a competitive body builder. There was a documentary made about him at the time he was on the body building circuit entitled Pumping Iron. The part of the movie that is most re-membered by people who saw it was his confession that he did not attend his father’s funeral because he was in the process of training for a competition and did not want to give in to the distraction his father’s funeral.

I can’t help hear this part of his story and wonder: what kind of focus gone awry causes a person to not attend his father’s funeral? What is wrong with someone who allows his or

her priorities to get so out of balance as to make this kind of choice? Of course, hidden behind the question is a self-congratulating smugness that allows me to feel superior to someone who made such a bad choice. I think I am standing on the high moral ground because I would never make that kind of choice.

But if I am honest, then I probably would be forced to acknowledge that it is always easier to identify the problems in my neighbor’s yard than it is in my own. I have no doubt that I have many times allowed my priorities to become focused upon what I want rather than what I need.

Lent is a time in which we attempt to slow down enough to place the priorities of our life back in order.

We are told in scripture that Jesus “set his face to go to Jerusalem.” The passage means that there came a time in which Jesus knew what Jerusalem held for him, yet it was his mission to see it through so he kept his face, his focus, and commitment moving towards Jerusalem.

Lent is a season of spiritual commitment. No one is asked to truly suffer. No one I know will be expected to suffer bodily pain, much less death. It is merely an opportunity for each of us to acknowledge that we have allowed our priorities to get out of order, in one way or another.

So we take this season to set our face on God. We attempt, for this brief period of time, to return our focus to the one who created us, the one who loves us, and the one who has promised to redeem us.

The Refugee Resettle-ment Ministry is pre-paring to welcome our fifth refugee family. If you are interested in getting involved either through volunteering your time or donating items, we’d love to hear

from you. We have an urgent need for do-nations of gently used household items and furniture to help set up the family’s new apartment. The resettlement agency pro-vides beds and mattresses. But we could use almost anything else: dressers, dining table and chairs, end tables, lamps, linens, pots and pans, small appliances, etc. We will also need volunteers to help set up the apartment and to provide fellowship and transporta-tion upon their arrival. If you are interested in volunteering or making donations, please contact Allison Ezell at [email protected] or 404-584-7323.

A New Look at Scripture through an Old Frame

Join The Rev. Dan Matthews, Jr. as he takes a look at five passages from scripture and a corresponding master piece that the scripture inspired. Artists explored will be Leonardo da Vinci, Paolo Veronese, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Eugene Delacroix.

O P P O R T U N I T I E S

On any given Monday or Wednesday morning, about ten blocks south on Peachtree from St. Luke’s, folks gather for Morning Prayer. Before we come together in the prayer circle, we enjoy steaming hot cups of coffee. Someone always raises their cup in

the air and says, “Ahhh, thank you Lord for good hot coffee.” I smile and say, “Thank you, Holy One, for our broth-ers and sisters at St. Luke’s who have given us all this coffee and creamer.” Having a cup of coffee before we pray warms our bodies and souls. We serve 80-90 cups of coffee each day and perhaps twenty folks stay to pray for themselves, each other, and all God’s people. Thank you for help-ing Church of the Common Ground be a church community on the streets of Atlanta.

Adult Christian Education

6

St. Luke’s welcomes fine art and documentary photographer Marilyn Suriani February 17 as she brings her expertise and insight to the Adult Education series Lent Through Lens.

Those attending the class are asked to bring their own cam-eras --any kind. Still, video, DLSR, point and shoot -- even a phone camera will work! Using the Gospel lessons for each Sunday during Lent, participants will read scriptures and offer interpretation of the reading through their own documentary photography. Participants will also be coached on basic cam-

era techniques. All levels of “camera users” are welcome.

Suriani’s work can be found in the permanent collections of museums, corporations, private individuals, and includes two commissioned exhibits at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Her documen-tary studies include Storefront Churches, which features small urban non-corporate congregations, and The Women’s Prison. Suriani was the Senior Photographer for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games. Her photos were projected on the jumbo screen and televised worldwide during the 1996 opening ceremonies.

CHILDREN’S CHAPEL

Just as we are about to change to Lent, the Children’s Chapel is changing too. We have two new leaders, Em-my (one of our seminarians) and Rev. Nan. They enjoy working each week with the kids and helping them come closer to God. Over the last 3-4 months they have been working on the liturgy for chapel. Changes like adding Prayers of the People and a short reflection on the Scripture are enhancing our already terrific offering on Sunday mornings. We have great music and story volunteers that help create a special time of worship for our young ones. Join us on Sundays (except the first Sunday of the month) in Wilmer Chapel at 9 am.
