Vibrant Culture A Historic Island St-Kitts and Nevis changed hands many times between English and French, which has left it a heritage of cities with names from both coun-tries. Contrariwise, the architecture there is very Anglo-Saxon in the Victorian style and especially in downtown Basseterre: Circus Place the repro-duction of the ‘Berkeley Memorial Clock’.

There are also several ancient British fortifica-tions which have been restored with minutiae and reproducing the tiniest details of original construction. St-Kitts and Nevis will be called to be developed in the near future, in fact many projects are in progress or completion, notably vast dockings to accommodate the largest liners and cruisers with terminals, loading docks, etc.

What is really remarkable on St-Kitts and Nevis is the natural aspect. Many tropical birds which one rarely finds elsewhere are present in great con-centration in the nature and there are also the fa-mous monkeys which, it is said, were introduced by the pirates. An all-new road permits going to the southeast end of St-Kitts (Turtle Beach) where one feels that a certain febrility in the air will make of this part of the island an appreciated place. Indeed, one has only to take a little adven-ture in the underwoods with some fruit in hand to see oneself quite soon surrounded by monkeys coming gently to meet one to get fed. For the inhabitants of the islands, on the other hand, the monkeys are not perceived as as big a joy, for these pretty little hairy beings plunder the harvest

and nose around everywhere they can go.Tropical tempered by constant sea breezes; little seasonal temperature variation; rainy season (May to November).

With coastlines in the shape of a baseball bat and ball, the two volcanic islands are separated by a three-km-wide channel called The Narrows; on the southern tip of long, baseball bat-shaped Saint Kitts lies the Great Salt Pond; Nevis Peak sits in the centre of its almost circular namesake island and its ball shape complements that of its sister island. The highest point is Mount Liamui-ga (St Kitts) at 1,156m.

Although St Kitts and Nevis gained status as an independent country in 1983, it was part of Britain for over 200 years, being colonized in 1782, and this has left its mark on the country today. British traditions play an important part in the modern culture of St Kitts and Nevis, and most inhabitants are of African descent, having been brought in during the early colonial period. English is the official language spoken here, and around 50 percent of the devoutly religious pop-ulation is Anglican. Many others practice another form of Christianity, and there is also a large Rastafarian community, which reflects St Kitts and Nevis position as a Caribbean country.

No doubt, a big part of the culture of St Kitts and

Nevis is their national sport, cricket. With its influences from the British Empire that dominat-ed many countries in the Caribbean for centuries, the residents are passionate about cricket, as in so many other Commonwealth member countries. St Kitts and Nevis do not usually compete alone as a single country, but join the multi-national sporting confederation called the West Indies, which is colloquially known as the ‘Windies’. This team has had many successes, formed in 1926, and from the 1970s to the 1990s they were con-sidered the strongest team in the world. St Kitts and Nevis residents are very proud to be part of the team. You can learn more from the public displays at Warner Park, the cricket stadium in Basseterre.

The high season on St Kitts runs from mid-De-cember to April when the cost of accommodation peaks and the weather is at its best. St Kitts is an island with a great variety of attractions, from hiking to golf to historic sites. It is enjoyable at any time of year with its warm seas and sunny skies.Consider visiting when the island is in party mood – popular events include the annual St Kitts Music Festival at the end of June, the St Kitts Carnival (mid-December to early January), and international cricket matches at the Warner Park Stadium in Basseterre.
