Rabbi Reacts Economic hard times affect a lot of our families and friends.

It \Aiould be wonderful if your membership in this BJBE family could enable you to find a position or give someone else a decent job.

Our office will try to be the go-between . Send us resumes with details attached as to what you're hoping to find . Congregants who have jobs to fill are urged to look first at the resumes of Temple members. Maybe the right people will find one another inside our Temple family. Another bit of networking couldn't hurt. (And making a job for someone should be considered a mitzvah of the highest order in these times.)

We have finally been able to arrange for Larry Hoffman to be our Scholar-in-Residence. He'll be here May 1-3.

He is one of the great teacher-lecturer-enlighte11ers of our movement and of our day as well. Trust your rabbi on this one . Don't miss Dr. Larry Hoffman. (He's a professor of liturgy at the New York HUC and much in demand as a scholar for congregations.)

Pra.ldent'• Corner Lots of exciting things are continuing to happen at the Tem

ple. I hope you are a part of them. In my earlier columns I urged those congregants who have never been on a committee to participate, and those who have, to "re-up" . The good news is that many of you have found that feeding the homeless, joining In services at local nursing homes, and doing other tzedakah projects has given you a certain inner "naches" that doesn't come from your other activities. Other good news is that there are plenty of openings on a whole bunch of other committees .

Soon we'll be repeating our successful "Taste of Tradition" and need more volunteers to help Joe Schyman. We are also planning a Shabbat Dinner honoring long-standing Temple members. Sonni Helmer, our Membership V.P . could use a few more helpers on her committee .

Do I paint the picture? This is YOUR temple. WE are responsible for making It into whatever we want, for shaping, and molding it so our Jewish selves feel good. The future of our temple will be determined by how we the laity define it for ourselves. Join in ; volunteer. You'll be doing something rewarding as well as shaping our collective futures.

On another note, we are beginning to think about forming a group for Singles between 30-ish and 50-ish . If you have any interest in participating, give me a call and together we'll push the idea into action .

Speaking of action , a group of members has expressed the idea, and already held a meeting, re-activating our Temple Brotherhood. If you weren't at this first meeting and are interested, call Darleen Salomon, Special Activities V .P . and she'll pass along your name.

Lastly, our Nominating Committee is currently meeting to select Trustees and Officers for the next Temple year. If you are asked, consider this the honor that it is and know that your temple family values you, your participation and input , and your leadership, and then say "YES" . I promise you we'll try very hard to make it fun , challenging, and rewarding.

Social Action The Tzedakah recipient for the month of March is Danny

Siegel's Ziv Tzedakah Fund. This is one fund which finds and donates to many lesser known charitable organizations or people . Funds go to The Orthopaedic Hospital for Children in Jerusalem or the Sewing Workshop in Jerusalem or Rayna Kely, the Shoe Lady of Denver or Seattle's Baby Corner where there is a mitzvah crib for a collection for goods for homeless babies and children. Since this fund began In 1981 over a million dollars has been distributed to Tzedakah recipients worldwide with only 3% being used for administration . Your generosity in donating to the Tzedakah Box is greatly appreciated.

The "Feed the Homeless" January Team brought bagged lunches to the Olive Branch shelters on W. Madison and the Sousa Shelter on S. Aberdeen. Volunteers served a hot meal for residents at the Chicago Industrial League and left lunches for those street people who come in after 6 pm to stay the night. Your donations of food, fruit, chips and sweets are terrific. We have the volunteers, if we had more food, we could go to more shelters. If you own any kind of restaurant or food store , think about donating your leftover or not quite right product to us. We feed the homeless the fourth Sunday of every month and one of us wo-uld be glad to pick up bread, delimeat , fruit , chips, candy, or any food product, the fourth Saturday of every month. Call Pat Frazin (945-6620), Sybil Stern (272-4171), Shari Baer (634-4667) or me.

FEED THE HOMELESS THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF THE MONTH 9-10 AM

(FEBRUARY 23 - MARCH 22) Bring Bagged lunches and/ or donations of fruit or sweets to the North Entrance and the team of the month will take them to the Shelters.

On January 30th, Jeff Hoffmeister spoke to the committee about the Northwest Suburban Cook County Public Action to Deliver Shelter Program. There are 18 churches in the northwest suburbs providing 12 hours of shelter, dinner and breakfast to the homeless twice a week from October to April. Two of our congregants are going to man one of the shifts at Jeffs church in Palatine to see what is involved so that we can organize our own group for service to begin this October. T empie Chai has 80 volunteers who rotate one Saturday night each month (all three shifts) for the 7 months.

I recently spoke with Sara Cohn, a social services consultant better known as The Mitzvah Lady. She spoke of many needs going unfilled we could help with. The list is long so we're going to tackle one need at a time. In March we will begin a month long drive to collect infant clothing. Mt. Sinai Hospital newborns here, and Ethiopian infants across the ocean are in need.

The economic picture is such that the problems of homelessness, hunger and poverty are growing and there are dozens of agencies that could use assistance . If you're not already volunteering or if you haven't been able to decide , call me and I will send you Sara's list. We can't solve the problem, but we can certainly show we care ... and we do!

Very Important Teacher of the Month SY BIERMAN Is one of If not the most important teacher at

BJBE. He has been teaching here for 23 years and each year students stand in line to get into his classes. He teaches Comparative Religion on Sundays and Changes in Jewish Tradition and Jewish Humor on Mondays. For many years he did criminal Investigation of organized crime for the IRS and for the past 16 years he has been a tax consultant for attorneys against the IRS. In his life's work he certainly has learned to handle people well . He handles the classroom so beautifully because he comes to class well prepared, he has a wonderful sense of humor, he likes the students very much and empathizes with them. He feels he Is still very much a kid and does not ever intend to grow up. Sy has been nominated by BJBE for the prestigious Covenant Award which is a very high honor paid to teachers and we all have our fingers crossed for him to win . Thank you Sy, for all you have given to our students and for coming to speak to the Education Committee .

Mel Merlan• at BclBE We're delighted that Mel

Merians, Chairman of the UAHC National Board, will be speaking to us at the Alternative service, Friday, March 13th, downstairs at 8:30 pm. (I think that Marshall Krolick and Zelda Wise made this possible with the clout that they've earned In UAHC.)

Mel Merians has been partlcularl y involved In the Outreach program over the years. He also serves on the board of HUC-JIR and has

worked actively with the Jewish Museum and the Jewish Foundation for Christian rescuers. He and his wife Elaine helped create the "Art of the Holocaust" exhibition that toured in America .

In private life he has been senior vice president of Consolidate Foods-Sara Lee .

If you want to find out what's happening on the national Reform Jewish scene , wtih a special emphasis on Outreach , plan to hear Mel Merlan at Temple .

Your MAZON Dollars at Work MAZON's grant to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan

Chicago's EZRA Multi-Service Center enabled the Center's food pantry to serve 218 additional people last year. MAZON support also meant that the Center no longer had to use limited federal grant funds to purchase food; MAZON's grant helped stock the Center's pantry shelves, while the federal money was used exclusively to meet another pressing need: securing emergency housing for homeless families.

The MAZON Committee gratefully acknowledges donations from the following:

Sharon and Jordan Glassner Julie and Greg Harris Elaine and Heinz Hen:

Elaine Hom Rubin MarlAnn and Al Schwartzenberg

Sandie and Stanley Sklar Seymore and Bernice Waitsman

MAZON suggests a contribution of 3% of the cost of a celebratory event party, meal, etc. Your contributions will make a difference In MAZON's battle against hunger. Thanks for caring.

Early Childhood Center News On Friday mornings, the young ladies of the Gan

Aleph class of the Early Childhood Center can be found in the corner of their preschool room. They've cleaned up, put on fancy clothes from the dress-up comer, and are busy getting ready for Shabbat, while telling the boys to be quiet and behave and help .

After several weeks of teaching about Shabbat, this is what Mrs. Robbins found the children doing one morning. Does our school have an effect?

In November, we spent a weekend up at OSRUI learning about "Jewish Giving" . We recently had a pizza/movie night here at the Temple . Attendance has been great, and I hope more 4th and 5th graders will join us in the future .

JYG began the year with an afternoon at The Enchanted Castle and the turnout was great! In January we spent a weekend up at OSRUI discussion rebellion . Watch out for upcoming events. You won't want to miss the fun!

A few events have been planned and then have had to be cancelled due to the lack of R.S.V.P.'s. It is imperative that you R.S.V.P. for your kids by the deadline date . We need to plan for transportation and make reservations at the places we travel to . We encourage your children to attend Youth Group events , but they need to make their reservations ON TIME!! We hope to see your kids at the next event, and we welcome Jewish non-Tempfe members to attend as well!

Hidden Children of the Holocaust to meet In Chicago

A generation of Jewish children disappeared during the Holocaust. Some were killed in extermination camps, others died of hunger, exposure and disease . Children were the most vulnerable to victims. Few survived the camps. Most of those who were saved had been in hiding; some in convents, others lived in disguised identities with Christian families , still others survived in dark cellars, attics or holes in the ground.

After the war, those who were restored to their families of origin or to the Jewish community bore a heavy burden of loss, pain , shame and guilt. Though they stepped into daylight upon returning to normal life , they never shed completely the shadows of their former life during the years of persecution. Their experiences of separation and hiding could not come to the fore until the parent generation of survivors had spoken their piece.

Now, some 50 years after the war, the former hidden children are finding their voice, and as they do, they are searching for those whose experiences were similar to theirs. This search culminated In the 1st International Gathering of 1500 Hidden Children organized by the AOL, the New York Child Development Research Unit, and the Hidden Child Committee which took place in New York in May of 1991.

Subsequently, in Chicago, following an article by Charles Leroux in the Chicago Tribune (May 26, 1991) which reported on this New York conference , a number of former hidden children expressed an interest in coming together to share and attempt to understand their experience.

Responding to this need , a few former hidden children who attended the New York conference are planning a get together in Chicago on March 15, 1992 at Spertus Museum. One of the topics to be discussed will be the needs and concerns of former hidden children. In addition, documentation through the film , AS IF IT WERE YESTERDAY, will be presented and discussed.

For reservations and further Information, call Olga Weiss, -6- Curator, Spertus Museum (312) 922-9012.
