What I Want to be
When I grow up I am interested in being a civil engineer. A civil engineer plans and builds buildings and roads for public use.
Pros and Cons of Being a Civil Engineer
PROS: Civil Engineers help cities by building buildings and roads. Improved
buildings and roads help the economy grow. Civil Engineers earn high pay. Civil Engineers don’t always have to stay in their office.
CONS: They work long hours during the week. 40+ hours. Often they are on the road overseeing projects on site. Failed projects could make business fail.
Schooling To be a civil engineer means many years of college. You have to earn a
bachelors degree in civil engineering from an accredited program. Some of the courses that need to be completed are:
Calculus Trigonometry Thermodynamics Physics ChemistryAll of these are important, especially the mathematics courses because it helps engineers make the calculations necessary to plan a building or road.
Then you have to get a state license (professional engineer license). To maintain the license you must complete continuing education courses.
