On Thursday, August 21, the police brought a 9-month oldboxer mix that had a shot-gun blast to the face in to theKindness Animal Hospital. The family was ready to euthanize, but the Practice owner wanted to try to save her.The family surrendered the dog to the practice – she was in very bad shape.
So far she has had 3 surgeries, and probably will need more, but she is doing well. Fortunately, as it was a shotgun, none of the shot hit her brain, her trachea, or any of hermajor organs.
The police have an article (see below) on their website andfacebook page, the Washington Post has an article online, and WTOP has reported on the story and updates. Thepolice also had a press conference at the hospital for the TV stations.

September 4 Update from Kindness Animal HospitalRuby continues to do well. Next week she is tentativelyscheduled with a specialist for reconstructive surgery on hermouth and neck in the hopes that she will be able to begineating. She also will need some dental work, but she isstrong and healthy and a very happy girl.
We are so appreciative of all the love and support Ruby hasreceived over the last couple of weeks. Thanks to everyonefor your prayers and support! We will keep Ruby’s progressupdated with pictures on our hospital website:www.KindnessHospital.com

breathing; she had been shot on the left side of her face and shoulder with a shotgun. Officer Michelle Ballorimmediately loaded Ruby into her police vehicle and drove her to the Kindness Animal Hospital located at 2130 University Boulevard West in Wheaton.
At the animal hospital, Officer Ballor was met by DoctorJeff Zolkiewicz, who immediately began life-saving measures.
Veterinarians at the hospital determined that Ruby wouldneed extensive medical care to save her life. Officer NoahLeotta spoke with Ruby’s owners and suggested that theyconsider surrendering Ruby to the hospital rather thaneuthanizing her - so that she could have the opportunity to live.
When Sergeant Dawn Felsen visited Ruby in the hospitallater in the week, she learned that Ruby was improvingafter undergoing several surgeries but needed to undergoadditional procedures. Sergeant Felsen discovered thatDoctor Jeff Zolkiewicz had absorbed all of the costs forthese surgeries.
Doctor Marc Katz, one of Doctor Zolkiewicz’s colleaguesat the hospital, says that, “Doctor Zolkiewicz has made it his mission to save this dog.”
Due to the nature of her injuries, her appearance, and possible need for future specialized care, the hospital staffdoes not think that Ruby is a good candidate for adoption. But there is great news. Doctor Zolkiewicz recognizes thatRuby is a real “gem” and has decided to adopt her.
We’re thrilled that Ruby has a new “leash on life” withDoctor Zolkiewicz and the staff at Kindness AnimalHospital and the entire police department are all rootingfor Ruby to make a full recovery.
Donated funds will go toward rehabilitating Ruby andother injured pets like her.
