English Mania 4A Candy Cheung

As a tradition of our school, the aim of the English Festival was to 'promote an active English speaking atmosphere and to encourage students to use English inside and out-side classrooms through various motivational activities.' This year's theme was English Mania. The slogan, 'Crazily in love with English', was originated from cat-loving Ms Leung. 'We hope students to be crazily in love with English as it is a way to improve our English holistically,' Mr Kwok said. 'With passion, we can do things much better.'

Here, we would like to highlight three activities: Movie Appreciation, Form Three Liberal Studies Quiz Show and Form One and Two Oral Games.

From Tuesday to Friday, a popular 2014 film The Fault in Our Stars, starring Shailene Woodley as Hazel Grace Lancaster and Ansel Elgort as Augustus Waters, was played in the English Room. The film, adapted from a book with the same title, was about the ro-

mance between two teenage cancer patients. Students were given book extracts for pre-reading. After viewing relevant film scenes, they discussed the protagonists' different attitudes towards life and other topics.

After school, the Liberal Studies Quiz Show was held in the English room. It was jointly hosted by the English Club and the Liberal Studies Club. They read the challenging questions to Form Three students, who then answered. Congratula-tions to 3A, the winner and 3D, the first runner-up!

On 6 May (Friday), Oral Games were held after school to F1 and F2 students. They included tongue twisters and riddles. Congratulations to 1A, who became the champion by getting 118 points. 1D and 1C followed up close behind by getting 117 and 115 points respectively. Our Form One students were competent indeed!

Apart from the activities above, the annual Junior Form Inter-class English Atmosphere Competition and Senior Form Individual Sticker Award were held. Other inter-class competitions were also held across junior forms, with Drama Com-petition for Form One, Radio Plays for Form Two and Commercials for Form Three, all of which took place in the school hall. For senior forms, there was SBA Film Viewing for Form Four and Form Five in their homerooms. About 30 Form Four students attended a Public Speaking Workshop in the English Room too.

We can’t forget the Swiss Family Robinson drama performed by Absolutely Fabulous Theatre. Some lucky Form 4 students even had the opportunity to perform with the cast! It was interactive and the whole play was indeed a fun and hilarious event.

Reflection on English Mania 3C Colby Choi

The English Mania from 3rd to 9th May has brought us a wonderful and fruitful week . Did you enjoy spending more time in speaking English with teachers and schoolmates?

On 5th May, performers of Form 1 Drama Show put their full spirit into their acting, in order to show a great perfor-mance with innovative themes. Students enjoyed the programme so much.

It was worthwhile being a drama mentor as I could share my acting experience with the junior form students. It was a great chance for them to improve their acting skills and to raise their interest in learning English.

Other than the Form 2 Radio Plays, I liked the commercial shows filmed by Form 3 schoolmates. I really appreciated their creative ideas to sell their amazing products, such as ironizing pills, super banana, fantastic chewing gum and LOL baguette. Moreover, their team spirit was valuable for us to learn.

In the week of English Mania, students spoke English more fluently and confidently as they could get stickers from teachers and English ambassadors. How many stickers did you get?

Although this fascinating event took place in a short period of time, everyone treasured their time learning and speaking English. Students also bought readers from the book fair too. I hope that there will be more English activi-ties for us to improve our English in the future.

Form 5 University Talk 5C Alice Lai 5D Yoyo Yiu HKDSE is coming soon, what is your key to achieving better results and chasing your dreams? A university

talk might be a good choice for you to know more about your ideal university. This year, Form 5 students

were invited to attend university talks at The Hong Kong Chinese University and The Hong Kong Polytechnic

University.

The Hong Kong Chinese University

The Hong Kong Chinese University is seen to be a popular university choice among LKKCers. The talk

was presented by professors and some students of The Hong Kong Chinese University. Compared with other

university talks, the talk focused more on university life than university subjects. It allowed us to know more

about the interesting university life we’re longing for. Attractive hostels, picturesque campus environment,

numerous extracurricular activities, friendly classmates and professional teachers. We’ve never expected

that university life can be so diversified.

Not impressed yet? The bus tour around the campus will surely make you stupefied. The campus tour provided us with an op-

portunity to take a glimpse on the colleges in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The library has its light on until mid-

night; this made us feel the keen learning atmosphere. Moreover, the lakes and ponds in the campus provide students with a

relaxing environment for students to relieve their stress.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, which provides a variety of subjects to the learners, is also quite a popular option

for LKKC students. It is constituted of 8 faculties and schools including Applied Science and Textiles, Business, Construction

and Environment, Engineering, Health and Social Science, Humanities, Design and Hotel and Tourism Management that are

suitable for students with different interests and abilities.

A school travelling tour was assigned. Students were divided into 2 groups according to the choice that they had made be-

fore the visit. One group was to go around the School of the Optometry while the other was to visit the Department of Applied

Biology and Chemical Technology. The briefing given by the professor gave us valuable information about the DSE admission

requirements of the schools which helped us develop our goals and see a more observable future.

A lab tour was also organized. Students were given an honorable chance to explore the laboratories of the university and

to observe the experiments and researches done by the professionals. The tour guide also introduced some lab facilities to us

which had widened our scope of knowledge. I believe some of the students had had a wonderful biology lesson taught by the

professor. An excellent experience for them indeed.

Definitely, the talk and the tour raised our desire to enter university. The future will be an uphill battle, but under no cir-

cumstances should we would give up. Let’s try our best to grab the opportunities to enter our ideal university!

Form 5 Workplace Visiting 5D Joyce Ng, 5D Rachel Wong

It was exciting to visit the KARRIE INTERNATIONAL HOLDINGS LIMITED on a typical school day after period 6.

Hyper, we gathered in the school hall and waited for the coach . It took us about half an hour to get to the

company located in Tsuen Wan. We firstly attended a briefing session in the conference room. The CEO of the

company is an alumnus . Later we walked around the two-storey company. The company engaged in many ar-

eas like machinery production, catering, household product design, wedding services, etc. We visited the big

central kitchen, the photography area, the office and the product showroom. Then we were divided into

groups to learn more about the particular parts of the company. Four students and I were in the product de-

sign group. We took a look at their studio and learned how their products were designed. The design depart-

ment manager chatted with us about his entrance to Karrie and his foresight in the design industry. After a

quick tour in the design department, it was time to say goodbye. The hospitable staff prepared trays of cream

puffs and pudding for us. They were super delicious. With a dessert-filled stomach, we happily went back to

school.

Being divided into groups, some of us were taken to the Career Sparkle. Career Sparkle is the first Career Ser-

vice Center for youths in Hong Kong. After attending a briefing session, we were allowed to participate in a ca-

reer stimulation game which provided three sessions of job experiences. We could choose to experience a to-

tal of four areas of jobs including engineering and science, performing arts and media, customer service and

healthcare service. Each area provided a realistic and diversified working environment with professional equip-

ment. In the activity, we wore genuine working uniforms to become a staff member in different jobs and used

professional equipment and tools to finish the assigned duty.

Among the three jobs, being a nurse was the most impressive experience. We experienced the typical work of being a

nurse distributing drugs and applying treatment on patients. The game really helped me to know more about being en-

gaged in the healthcare service. I felt like a real nurse providing service for patients and I enjoyed this unique experience.

After that, we watched a video clip about various industries and learned more about the situations, requirements and

characteristics of different jobs through the sharing of workers. We also joined a group debriefing which reflected our

own interest, ability and gains. This session allowed us to know more about ourselves so that we can set up a unique goal

in life planning more easily.

The activity came to an end and with memories of different job experiences, we went back to school satisfactorily.

Healthy School Fun Fair cum Alumni Reunion Day 5B Amy Chen 5B Sabrina Wong

Do you still remember the happy time of Healthy School Fun Fair cum Alumni Reunion Day? Which booth did you enjoy the

most? Healthy School Fun Fair cum Alumni Reunion Day is a part of celebrating our school’s 35th anniversary. A lot of alumni

brought their other halves and their children back to their alma mater. One of the alumni said he could still remember his Art

lessons when he was a form one student. Amazing, right?

Many of the school clubs participated in the fair, hosting more than 15 booths, providing ex-

citing games and creative products for students, teachers and alumni. The clubs included Com-

munity Youth Club, the Economy Club, the Dance Club, Social Workers, Social Service Group,

Anti Drug Cadet, Home Economics Club, Art club, Guidance Prefects, the four houses of our

school and the Parent-Teacher Association.

In the PTA’s charity sale, there was a large variety of food and products. They sold refreshing

snacks such as earl grey pudding, siu mai, dumplings, fishballs, boiled eggs in tea and sweetcorn. Other than food, they also

sold toys, Swarovski crystal accessories and colourful decorative plants. The profit would be used as school resources. The Art

Club also sold their handmade necklaces, bracelets and dust plugs with dried flower decorations, along with pins designed by

the members.

The four houses prepared exciting sports-related games for the participants, with Man House hosting the Three-legged-race

(二人三足), Hung House hosting the archery game, Chung House with the ball throwing game and

Shun House with the Rainbow Throw. The Guidance Prefects also hosted 3 games in the booth, con-

tinuing on the Caring Week days from before, the games including The Cardbox Maze (紙箱迷宮), Fair

Trade Ballshooting (公平交易射波波) and Fair Trade Fishing (公平交易釣金魚), teaching the ele-

ments of fair trading and the concepts of social enterprise.

Besides the fantastic booths, the highlight was the brilliant Bubble Soccer Competition. Firstly, there

were competitions between students from different classes. The competition between students

was very fierce. All athletes did their best to bring us an exciting game. After that, there was a

match between students and teachers. Our principal Mr. Tai also joined in. There were battles

among teachers and teachers versus alumni. During the competitions, we could find the side of our

teachers we had never seen before. Although most of the students were just audience, we all agree

that we enjoyed the competition immensely.

Hopefully our alumni enjoyed the fun fair too. Even after graduation, LKKC continues to leave fond moments in our lives. Our

students and teachers showed the meaning of sportsmanship and cooperation in the event. We are looking forward to the

next Alumni Reunion event.

Inter-house Volleyball Competition 4A Cherry Lai

The inter-house volleyball competition held by the Student Union took place on 25th of April. The champion was Hung House, followed by Man House, Shun House and Chung House. Spectators paid full attention to the excitement and thrills brought by the game, even after the exhausting school work. Sweat poured down like rain on the court when players rushed for the ball. We interviewed a player from each house to tell us what hap-pened behind the scene.

Coconut Tse Kai Yat, playing the main spiker and setter for Man House thought that Man House had already done their best. One of the reasons that they lost might be their lack of energy, but considering the absence of teammates, they still did great after

all. He thanked all the teamplayers, particularly the ones who were not in the volleyball team and hoped he had left a remarkable memory to the F.5s.

Kenny Fu Kwok Hin, playing the main spiker for Hung House said that the key to glory is the syncing of minds and strong skill fundamentals of players. When asked about his feelings after gaining victory, he said "As the House Captain, I was touched to see how focused they were when the teammates played and all our hard work paid off." Howev-er, he mentioned that other houses are rising up to the next challenge and Hung House must work harder to de-fend their championship.

Hugo Wong Lok Hin, playing the libero for Chung House responded that even though Chung house came last in the game, it didn't mean that Chung House will stay in this place forever. They showed faith in winning in the near future. In addition, they are recruiting new members to join the volleyball team and play for their house or even take part in the school team.

Anson Yau Tsz Ho, playing mostly the setter and libero for Shun House said that it had been a tough game for the team. They did not have enough ca-pable athletes when relatively compared to other houses. When asked about the rationale of not being a main spiker as a volleyball player of the school team, he replied "If there is no defense, how can we build up our offense?" which indicated he had to help teammates stop losing points

before attacking. He thanked all the teammates for their devotion and ended the inter-view with a state-ment, "The time you stop thinking, it's also the time you start losing."

Professor Paws Visit by Animals Asia 5A Tina Tang

On Friday 4th March, Professor Paws from Animals Asia came to our school along with Yat Yat, a doctor dog from the organization, for Form 5 English Elective lessons. The topic of the talk was Animal Cruelty. This problem is getting more and more serious in Hong Kong without people noticing. As defined by Hong Kong Law, animal cruelty is a serious offence and was broadly de-fined as the action or inaction of a person (or persons) that causes unnecessary suffering to an animal (or animals). They include acts of violence, acts of neglect or apathy, and penalty.

Professor Paws started the talk by presenting bear farms. She intro-duced Moon bears. A large number of them are being locked up in cages in bear farms so that their bile can be extracted and used for medicinal uses. One of the aims of Animals Asia is to save these bears. According to recent calculation by the organization, 415 bears were saved from China and 140 bears were saved in Vietnam while 373 of the rescued bears are safe and in good shape. Profes-sor Paws later showed us a video about this issue. According to the video, the bears are easily in-fected due to poor hygiene. Since the environment of the bear farms is poor and the workers only ever care about extracting bile, the needles used for extraction were not well-cleaned. This led to infection. Most of the teeth of the bears were also broken because they were constantly biting the

cages. In fact, these bears belong to nature. They need space and freedom instead of cages. The lack of exercise is unhealthy for the bears. After rescuing the bears from the farms, Animals Asia provided a large space for the bears to exercise. Swimming pools and fruit ice ball were also provided so they were able to cool down in summer and stay healthy all the time.

Next, Professor Paws talked about the issue of abandoned pets. She stated that a lot of people don't think carefully before purchasing pets and end up abandoning them, which leads to the issue of stray animals. Animals Asia provides shelter for these animals. Workers will clean them and give them medical checks to make sure they are under great care. She also talked about the issues brought by stray animals. Those animals might be taken away and consumed by people. These stolen pets might carry diseases and hence affects human health. As this kind of industry isn’t in check, no one checks for dog meat, which might cause illness to the consumers. She also mentioned Yulin Dog Meat Festi-val, in which people eat dog meat for celebration, as an example of the act of consuming animal meat. Moving on to ways to oppose animal cruelty, Professor Paws said it is important to make good choices while buying clothes. She said it is better to avoid buying clothes made with animal fur as the process of removing fur off animals’ body is cruel.

Professor Paws also stated the other aim of the organization which is to change people's view on dogs. They aren't just pets. They can be helpful and contribute to society just like any other humans. She gave examples of police dogs, which work in the airport to help catch smugglers, search and rescue dogs, which look for missing people using their sensitive noses that are way faster than technology and people, animal therapies, which work in elderly homes to bring life back to lonely elderly peo-ple or special schools to cheer up distressed students and brighten up their moods.

This is when Professor Paws introduced Yat Yat, which was brought here by her trainer Miss Chan. Before she let students go upstage and interact with the doctor dog, she talked about rules when greeting pets for the first time. Rule number 1 is to get permission from the owner. As the owner is responsible to tak-ing care of the pet, he or she knows whether it likes to be touched or its reaction to strangers so that he or she can tell you where (not) to touch the animal. After getting permission from the owner, you can proceed to greeting the pet. You should always let it smell you first by holding a fist and put it near its

nose. If it turns away after smelling you, it means that it is okay to touch it.

Towards the end of the talk, during the Q and A section, Professor Paws shared that rescued stray pets will be given 3 to 4 days to find owners. If no one claims or adopts them within this period, they will be put to sleep. When asked if she loves it here in Hong Kong, Professor Paws replied that she has been living in Hong Kong for 25 years and it feels like home to her. Before she moved here, she lived in Ireland. She owned a farm and spent a lot of time with farm animals. She revealed that she was always taking care of dogs. "The thing about dogs, they are always there for you," she said. "Dogs are loving creatures because they love you when you are going through tough times." When asked of ways to overcome fear of dogs, she joked that the first thing was not to run away from dogs. She said that those who are afraid of dogs tend to think that they are scary or dangerous, which was probably what their parents had been telling them. Therefore, they need to learn that not all dogs are dangerous and change their way of thinking, followed by their actions. She suggested trying to interact more with dogs so that they can know that dogs are harmless.

Now that we have learnt more about the issue of animal cruelty, we know more about the ways to prevent it from hap-pening. Let’s show our support, love and respect towards animals through actions and think before we act, as the lives of ani-mals are just as important as ours.

K-pop Culture 5A Chloe Liao

After taking a brief look at K-pop in ‘K-pop Culture Part 1’, let’s move on and talk about things that we can learn from K-pop. People may think that K-pop fans only care about the appearance of K-pop idols without consider-ing their actual ability. Actually, according to a survey conducted by an international K-pop fandom website, dance and live performance are the most important factors considered by K-pop fans where singularity and lyr-ics come next. Indeed, there are many things that we can learn from K-pop idols and I am going to talk about three of them.

The trainee system

To start with, let’s introduce the trainee system in the K-pop industry. The trainee system is considered as one of the most important factors leading to the great success of K-pop. People become trainees after passing an audition, being found by scouts, or completing contests. There are only 10-20 trainees in each company while over 20% of Korean teenagers want to become K-pop idols, so you can imagine how intense the competition is. Being a trainee is a very tough job and you have to work to the bone and there is no room for crybabies. As they usually start their trainee life at 10-15, they have to go to school in the morning and attend the training lessons right after school. People may also sacrifice their sleeping time to practice more in order to improve their dancing and singing skills. You have to be physically strong to endure the harsh trainings, at the same time, mentally strong to bear the great pressure given by the company and mainly, yourself. Trainees are giving up everything for it although their future is still left unknown. Their only goal is to debut and dreams may be the only thing supporting them.

Survival shows

In order to gain more attention before any debut, some large companies will produce survival shows to pro-mote their rookie group. ‘Kara Project’ is to choose one of the seven trainees to join Kara and replace members Jiyoung and Nicole who left. ‘Sixteen’ is to select nine members from sixteen trainees to form a rookie girl group called Twice. ‘Produce 101’ is a 2016 reality girl group survival show on Mnet. It is a large-scale project in which the public "produces" a unit girl group by choosing members from a pool of 101 trainees from 46 enter-tainment companies as well as the group's concept, debut song, and group name. 101 girls have to compete for 11 places to debut as I.O.I. for one year. The winner of ‘Kara Project’ Yeongji, Twice and I.O.I. gained great suc-cess right after their debut so it is not hard to see the effectiveness of survival shows. Survival shows are hard and cruel but if you can overcome them, you will have a better chance. Do not give up! Fight for your dreams!

Just carry on!

Next, I am going to introduce a group called Gfriend which consists of six members named as Yuju, Yerin, SinB, Eunha, Sowon and Umji. They debuted with ‘Glass Bead’ and published ‘Me Gustas Tu’ in 2015. They are noticed by the public because of their catchy songs and powerful choreography. However, their professional attitude is their key to success. The video of a K-Pop singer who fell 8 times within 1 song will inspire you to keep going no matter what. Just 25 seconds into their performance in the South Korean capital, Seoul, one of the members of Korean girl band GFriend took a tumble on stage. But not long after she picked herself up, band member Yuju (seen wearing a white knee protector) fell over again, and then again and again. In fact she slipped over eight times during the four-minute song. Midway through the performance of their new hit Me Gustas Tu, another member, SinB, also face-planted the slippery stage. A video of the performance posted to YouTube has been viewed more than 1 million times since it was uploaded. Despite the blunders, the girls re-gained their composure and carried on with their high-energy performance like true professionals, demonstrating to us all that no matter how many times life knocks you down, just get back up and carry on.

Apart from Gfriend, another K-pop girl group called EXID also had a really hard time before getting chances to shine. EXID debuted in 2012 with their first song called 'Whoz that girl'. They had six members originally, including LE, Hani, Jeonghwa, Dami, Uji and Haeryeong. But after two months, Dami, Uji and Haeryeong quit the group and Hyelin, Solji joined afterwards. They released 'I Feel Good' and 'Every Night' with the new members but they didn’t get top ratings. They had no endorsement and of course no income. Therefore, their company lost hope and put them aside for three years. In April 2014, EXID left their original company and went to Yedang Entertainment and released 'Up and Down' but still could not gain a great success. They thought they were going to disband until a youtuber @pharkil uploaded a fancam of Hani. People were sur-prised that EXID got great songs, great singing, dancing and rapping skills and they deserved more attention. Their talents were finally being discovered. EXID's story is a miracle but we can still learn something from it. Do not be sad or disappointed when no one notice your talent, get yourself ready for anytime and you will get your right time to shine.
