Many people don't understand that stretching should be done on a regular basis as part of a daily routine! Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Then, when you want to use muscles for activity, they are weak and unable to extend all the way. That puts you at risk for joint pain, strains, and muscle damage. For example, sitting in a chair all day results in tight hamstrings in the back of the thigh. That can make it harder to extend your leg or straighten your knee all the way, which inhibits walking. Likewise, when tight muscles are suddenly called on for a strenuous activity, they may become damaged from suddenly being stretched. Injured muscles may not be strong enough to support the joints, which can lead to joint injury. Regular stretching keeps muscles long, lean, and flexible and means that exertion won't put too much force on the muscle itself. Healthy muscles also help a person with balance problems to avoid falls. What’s the Stretching All About

You may think of stretching as something performed only by runners or gymnasts, but we all need

to stretch in order to protect our mobility and independence. Many people don't understand that

stretching should be done on a regular basis as part of a daily routine!

Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy to maintain a range of motion in the

joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Then, when you want to use muscles for

activity, they are weak and unable to extend all the way. That puts you at risk for joint pain, strains,

and muscle damage.

For example, sitting in a chair all day results in tight hamstrings in the back of the thigh. That can

make it harder to extend your leg or straighten your knee all the way, which inhibits walking.

Likewise, when tight muscles are suddenly called on for a strenuous activity, they may become

damaged from suddenly being stretched. Injured muscles may not be strong enough to support the

joints, which can lead to joint injury.

Regular stretching keeps muscles long, lean, and flexible and means that exertion won't put too

much force on the muscle itself. Healthy muscles also help a person with balance problems to avoid

falls.

Policy of the Month: Injury and Illness Prevention Program By Administration Employee and client safety is of utmost importance and concern to Community Catalysts of California.

Occupational and personal safety is the responsibility of every employee. Injuries can be prevented.

Trained and motivated employees are the key to a safe and injury free work environment. In keeping with

this commitment, Community Catalysts of California has established this Injury and Illness Prevention

Program (the IIPP) to explain its safety policies and procedures.

Responsibility for Administration: The Director of Operations/DOO will have the principal authority

and provide overall direction for implementing the IIPP and will have the Assignment of Responsibility.

The Human Resources Manager will coordinate all efforts and oversee the enforcement of safety policies

and rules. Within each region, there will be a Safety Coordinator who will be responsible for the

administration and monitoring of safety requirements within their designated areas. Each office will have

a Safety Officer to monitor compliance to the established safe work practices and to take immediate

What’s Going On? Santa Clara went on a CAC trip to Monterey Bay Aquarium this month. Monterey donated the tickets to us and

we were able to rent 2 15-passenger vans through Enterprise. It was a busy day there with lots of children as

well. The clients had a blast viewing all the fish and marine life. The playful otters are always a joy to watch.

Some clients bought souvenirs at the gift shop. It was an awesome day trip!

Imper ia l Va l ley By Ana Norris What’s Going On? Our clients had a ball as this year’s Mid-

What’s Going On? We would like to congratulate client Eugene

on increasing his independence. Eugene

has never been alone in his 60 years of life

and he recently moved in to his own

apartment. His CM, DSA and Sister-in-law

worked hard together to keep his moving

smooth, comfy and well prepared for his

new adventure. Well done Eugene!!

Ronald was an assistant

coordinator for this year’s

Special Olympics.

Redwood Coast Ukiah By Jennifer Bilstein What’s Going On? Spring has sprung, and the events are aplenty! We’d first like to wish a

big Happy Birthday to our clients Harlan, Robert and Harry!! Everyone

had fun birthday parties and Harlan’s was a bit more extravagant as it

was his 80th birthday! He had a get together at the Seabiscuit Ranch,

visited the horses and had his party catered by none other than one of

his favorite IHSS providers and RM JoAnn’s daughter, Jessica! It was a

beautiful day and all who attended had a very nice time.

Some of our staff, including myself, had the pleasure of meeting up with

NCM Shelley this month for CPR and First Aid training. Lucky for us,

Shelley is a Red Cross trained CPR and First Aid instructor and she was

able to come up this month and conduct 2 trainings. We all learned a lot

and had fun doing it.

Our clients certainly had some fun times this month, too! Earlier in the

month they got to dress up and attend the annual Spring Fling.

Everybody danced the night away and had a wonderful time. We also

had a Smoothie Party this month at our Client Advisory Committee

(CAC) meeting. CM Mone helped the clients run the meeting while RM

JoAnn and I made up six different kinds of smoothies for all the clients

to taste. We had such a wide variety of ingredients from the typical

bananas and berries to grapes, watermelon, spinach and even broccoli!

Everyone really enjoyed the variety of smoothies we made and they

learned a fun new way to incorporate vegetables into a tasty drink! Our

clients also participated in the annual UVAH Bowling Tournament this

month. At our CAC meeting in March the clients decided they wanted

fruit as the theme for their shirts that they used for this bowling

tournament and an upcoming event. I created 3 fun logos for the bowling

teams and put the shirts together for them. We had the Berry Good

Bowlers, the Banana Splits, and Pears and Spares. Everyone seemed

to like their shirts and they all had a great time at the bowling

tournament.

Last but not least, we’d like to wish a fond farewell to our DSA Cindy.

Cindy was a dedicated employee who was with Community Catalysts

California for nearly 14 years. During her time with the company, Cindy

was very fond of the clients she worked with and advocated for them

and their health. The office staff and client Randy took Cindy out to lunch

to celebrate her retirement. She’s looking forward to having more free

time and is already planning a trip abroad to Germany with a friend.
