What’s the Most Dangerous Part of
Construction Work?
It’s well understand that construction sites are dangerous places. Take a look at any large
construction project and you will see a hectic scene.
People are performing risky tasks in a changing environment, but which one of these dangers
harms the most workers?
The answer is “falls” for both construction injuries and deaths. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reported that in 2013, more than one third of construction deaths were from falls.
Workers are often perched up high on ladders and scaffolding with little, if any, safety gear.
Something could strike the base of that unsteady structure and make it move.
The next most common danger is when workers are struck by objects.
“Lot of large machinery move around a construc-tion site, including backhoes, forklifts, bulldozers,
front end loaders and cranes. All of these machines can do more damage than a car.
Massachusetts law gives hurt workers a trade-off: The workers compensation system is generous, but they can’t sue their employer or coworkers.
There are exceptions where hurt workers can file lawsuits, such as lawsuits against subcontractors or the makers of faulty equipment. See this post
for a more detailed explanation.
