THERE ARE BARS…AND THEN THERE ARE BARS LOCATED IN THE MOST EXOTIC OF LOCATIONS THAT TAKE YOUR DRINKING EXPERIENCE TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL. WE’VE SCOURED THE WORLD TO PICK OUT THE 10 BARS YOU NEED TO VISIT BEFORE YOU KICK THE PROVERBIAL.

Northern Lights Bar, IcelandPerched on stilts with a backdrop of majestic mountainous lava fields, the award-winning Northern Lights bar is part of the super chic ION Adventure Hotel and your perfect vantage point for viewing the epic Northern Lights. Enjoy the cool vibe of Nordic décor, Icelandic folk tunes and dimmed lights as you sip cocktails and look out through the walled glass for a sighting of the eerie green light show.

What to order: a frozen shot of Brennivín: Iceland’s signature liquor.

Baobab Tree Bar, South AfricaThis tiny bar is located in the hollow of a 1700 year old African baobab tree in Limpopo Province, South Africa, and can only serve 15 guests at a time. When baobabs become a thousand years old, they begin to hollow inside and the owners of this particular tree have transformed it into a fully functioning bar – complete with a wine cellar, music system, draught beer and a dart board!

What to order: A glass of Pinotage, South Africa’s signature wine that’s a cross between Pinot noir and Cinsaut.

Hotel Edelweiss, SwitzerlandWhere better to enjoy a beer than 2,000 metres above the ground surrounded on all sides by a magnificent mountain panorama formed by 21 peaks at the heart of the Alps? After a hard day’s skiing in winter or hiking in summer, you can relax on the sun drenched terrace as you take in the breathtaking views of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau mountain range as well as stunning open views of the surrounding Swiss Alps.

What to order: A refreshing stein of Quöllfrisch lager.

Rick's Café, JamaicaResting at the top of a cliff on the far west end of Jamaica, this iconic bar is renown not just for watching world-famous sunsets but also for the daring antics of people diving off the surrounding cliffs. Whilst sipping margaritas you can watch locals and tourists alike plunge into the crystal clear water up to 20 metres below. You might even be tempted to jump yourself – but take care – this is a notoriously dangerous spot for less wary tourists.

What to order: Rick’s world-famous Rum Punch

Alux Caverna Lounge, MexicoThis 18000 year old geological formation is the largest cave bar in the world and a mystical backdrop for your evening cocktail. Make sure you explore the many grottos and caverns, underground river and stalactites as you take the loop through the cave before returning to the chandelier lit lounge for drinks.

What to order: Paloma – a local cocktail made with grapefruit and tequila.

The Sky Bar, Bangkok

At over 250 metres high, the Sky Bar is one of the highest rooftop bars in the world, rising 63 stories above the streets of Bangkok, on the roof of Lebua State Tower. Promising an extensive menu of seasonal cocktails, carefully crafted by the resident mixologists, sipping a cold beer or zesty cocktail while the sun goes down over the city is the perfect beginning or close to any Thailand trip.

What to order: The Hangovertini – a tribute to "The Hangover Part II" which featured a few key scenes at the bar – this cocktail may lead to a night of poor decisions!

The Bucket List Bar, BondiIt seems fitting that we should end our bucket list with the iconic bar of the same title, located in our very own backyard. This Bondi Hipster haven by the sea has long been famous for buckets of beer, Pimm’s and prawns (different buckets) whilst offering front row views of the most beautiful beach in the world.

What to order: A Pimm’s pitcher (to share, obviously).

The Water and Wind Bar, VietnamSituated at the centre of a lake in the Binh Doung Province, this thatched bamboo dome works in harmony with wind energy and the water from the lake to create a naturally cool ventilated space. Stepping-stones lead across the reflection and into the massive thatched hut where lamps adorn the walls to create the perfect Zen hideout for a few reflective beverages.

What to order: Pho Cocktail – an infusion of grand Marnier, gin and pho spices.

Rooftop Bar, Bab-al-shams, DubaiSituated in the heart of the desert and nestled in the dunes of Dubai, this rooftop lounge is located in the luxurious Bab Al Shams Desert Resort and Spa. Head up to the roof in the late afternoon to catch the magical sunset, then sink back and enjoy a few drinks under the stars whilst enjoying live music and dancers.

What to order: Experience the exoticism of the Souk with a Sumac Sour cocktail.

Icebar, SwedenThe land of never-ending winters holds the bragging rights for the world's first ice bar, established in 1994. Located above the Arctic Circle, it's situated inside a luxurious ice hotel, where you can sip on cocktails or Champagne (out of glasses made entirely of ice) and dance on a floor made of snow, with people who travel here from all over the world. Every year artists redesign the bar with a different theme, using 40 to 50 tonnes of ice blocks harvested from the Torne River.

What to order: A Gray Wolf - Absolut Vodka, lingonberry juice and fresh lime.

NAME THAT WINE!If Canberra was a wine, what would it be called? That was the question Local Liquor asked Canberrans in a competition to name their official limited edition Canberra Day Wine, created in collaboration with leading local winemaker Nick O’Leary. Hundreds of names poured in and each one reviewed. But one winner ultimately stood out.

“Walt ‘n’ Marion” was the winning name submitted by Bernie Yates, who looked to Marion and Walter Burley Griffin, the architects of Canberra, for his inspiration.

“Being a wine to commemorate Canberra Day, a celebration of the official naming of the National Capital in 1913, I thought that a name that reminded us of the contribution that Walter and Marion Griffin made to this wonderful place we live in would be right,” says Bernie.

As well as winning the naming rights, Bernie helped design the label with local advertising agency, Coordinate and attended lunch with three friends at Nick O’Leary’s winery for an afternoon of wine tasting, food and ‘barrel’ sampling.

“Nick O’Leary is one of the Canberra region’s young guns, with an award-

winning reputation,” says Bernie. “So it was a real privilege to be able to taste the different barrels and contribute suggestions for their blending in making the final wine.”

As well as seeing his winning name printed on over 6,000 bottles to be sold at all Local Liquor stores in the ACT and NSW, Bernie chose a local charity that would receive $1 from every bottle sold, and received a year’s supply of the Canberra Day wine (that’s 52 bottles!)

Local Liquor Supplier and Group Brands Manager Craig Hazelton says that creating the wine and the competition was all about reinforcing their commitment to keeping things local.

“As a Canberra-based group, we wanted to create something that would really engage the community whilst supporting our local wine industry,” he says. “People in the Canberra region are very wine knowledgeable so the competition really resonated with them.”

So successful was the response, that Local Liquor will look to continue the competition annually, partnering with a different winemaker each year. So if you’ve got a winning name up your sleeve, be sure to make a submission. In the meantime, you can pick up a bottle of the Walt ‘n’ Marion Shiraz from any Local Liquor, Liquor & Co and Supabarn stores for just $27.99.

Neil McGuigan, Chief Winemaker and CEOmcguiganwines.com.au

Congratulations on your incredible win, Neil – did you think you could do it for the fourth time?

Thank you – I’m very humbled by the award. I believe these awards aren’t just good for us but great for Australian wine in general. We had a purple patch from 2009 to 2012, and I had my doubts as to whether we’d do it again, but thankfully our commitment to making quality wine has carried us through to the fourth time.

Is this something you set out to achieve when you joined the business?

When I first re-joined the business I put a challenge out to the McGuigan winemaking team, which was more about creating true, iconic wines for our brand than winning this particular award. The process allowed us to change the way we made wine every day; we had the ambition to craft wines of the highest calibre and then channelled the energy and focus to be on quality at every step of the process. I believe this process of making the wine the hero has led us to where we are today as four-time International Winemaker of the Year.

What is it about Australian wine that attracts people to it?

I’d have to say generosity of fruit – our raw materials (the grapes) are arguably the best in the world, made better by the climate in which we operate.

How is the 2017 vintage looking?

We’re right in the thick of it in the Hunter Valley! The season in the Hunter has never been kinder thanks to beautiful, dry conditions. The grapes look fantastic; last week we picked our Hunter Chardonnay which is set to knock socks off this year.

However, the other regions across Australia are actually ripening much slower than normal. We don’t expect the inland districts to start vintage until early February, with the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and the South East of Australia probably a month behind where we were last year. That said, all is looking good at present but there is still a long way to go.

Which of your wines would you suggest people buy to drink now?

Our McGuigan Shortlist range continually over delivers at its price point - we receive this feedback almost every week. Our 2016 Shortlist Chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills is always a crowd favourite, as is our Shortlist Shiraz from the Barossa Valley. For an everyday drink, our BIN range is drinking superbly!

In November 2016, McGuigan Wines entered the history books after being named International Winemaker of the Year for a record fourth time at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London.

Having previously won the title in 2009, 2011 and 2012, the fourth award has taken the Hunter Valley winery into new territory, as it became the first winery in the world to win the award four times in the competition’s 47-year history.

As the 2017 vintage looms around Australia, we sat down with Neil McGuigan, Chief Winemaker for McGuigan Wines to discuss his incredible win and what lies ahead for Australian wine.

NEW

A range of lively Australian sparkling wines from T’Gallant, including Chardonnay Pinot Noir, Prosecco and Pink Moscato. T’Gallant’s fresh look and feel will gradually roll out across the entire range of wines, taking cues from T’Gallant’s pioneering and free-spirited origins.

In the 1990s, T’Gallant founders went against advice to introduce and champion Pinot Gris and Girgio in Australia on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula after having fallen in love with the variety in Europe (Gris and Grigio are the same grape variety, typically made in different styles).

It is this pioneering approach and self-belief that has set T’Gallant apart. Today, T’Gallant has continued a tradition of producing fresh, food-friendly Australian wines with lively personalities.

Prosecco is an Italian white grape varietal. The main ingredient of Bellini cocktails, Prosecco is the fastest growing sparkling varietal in Australia. Proseccos are typically refreshing, dry and citrusy with a hint of sweet flavour.

Chardonnay Pinot Noir is a classic sparkling wine blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. The white Chardonnay grape gives the wine its finesse and aging ability, while the red Pinot Noir adds structure and fruit.

Moscato is a sweet and floral wine, produced in both still and sparkling styles, with a refreshing sweet flavour. T’Gallant Pink Moscato is made from Frontignac grapes which are pink in colour and which give the wine its blush hue.

T’Gallant Prosecco is fresh and dry with aromas of citrus, apple and pear leading to a bright and zesty finish. This sparkling wine makes a great aperitif or complement to antipasto, cured meats, subtle cheeses and seafood.

T’Gallant Chardonnay Pinot Noir exudes white peach aromas and citrus flavours with a hint of bread dough. This classic sparkling complements light salads, canapés and seafood.

T’Gallant Pink Moscato is fragrant, sweet and fully spritzed. It pairs beautifully with sweeter dishes and even spicy Asian food.

01Sparkling wine cannot be called Champagne, unless it’s made from one of the three grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) grown in a region of France called…Champagne.

02

There are around 49 million bubbles in a 750mL bottle of Champagne. The finer the bubbles, the better the quality.

03Forget the flutes, experts say Champagne is best served in a wine glass.

04Marilyn Monroe took a bath in Champagne. It took 350 bottles to fill up the tub.

05

Champagne corks pop out at speeds of 64km per hour on average.

06The longest recorded flight of a Champagne cork is 54 metres – more than half the length of a football field.

POPPING THE CORK ON CHAMPAGNE! Everyone loves a glass of sparkling – but how much do you know about your bubbles? Find out with our fun facts on French Fizz…

07The original Champagne glass was rumoured to be moulded from Marie Antoinette’s left breast.

08If you’re drinking good Champagne, you should see bubble trains on the sides of the glass.

09Not shaken or stirred – James Bond has been spotted drinking Champagne more than 35 times in his films.

10In the 19th century, members of English high society polished their boots with Champagne.

11The pressure in a Champagne bottle is around three times the amount of pressure that is in an average car tyre.

12The most expensive bottle of Champagne was created for an “unnamed client” for USD $2.07 million. The bottle was handcrafted from 18-carat solid gold with a 19-carat white diamond at its centre.

13On average 28,000 bottles of Champagne are served at Wimbledon each year.

14On average, there are 24 Champagne-cork related fatalities each . More than a third occur at weddings.
