The most out-standing Venetian art criticsof the time reported on it:Paolo Rizzi on the ‘IlGazzettino’, Berto Moruc-chio on the ‘Veneto Notte’and Enrico Buda for thebimonthly ‘La Vernice’. «What strikes one’s attentionat a first glance is the origin ofPratt’s expressionist world.One could affirm that, to thetypical stylistic schemes ofAmerican origin, he addedthe artistic ability of agraphic description of indu-bitable worth» wrote the lat-ter. In July 1967, at theGalleria L’Elefante of Cam-po San Provolo he opened“A Tale of Tintagel”, which,as he stubbornly went onrepeating, was not a paintbrand like Ducotone but thevillage in Cornwall where, aslegend has it, in the castle onthe promontory, King Ar-thur was born. It wasreviewed by Paolo Rizzi inthe Il Gazzettino who descri-bed it as “a witty divertisse-ment on De Chirico’s meta-physical themes”. Amongthe pictures taken at thetime, the one portraying Hu-go at the entrance with thecolleague Dino Battaglia is tobe pointed out. Impeccablein his suite and tie, the reser-ved Venetian master ofcomic books shows a lightsmile. The informal Pratt,with his easy-going look,wears a dark short-sleevedshirt worn outside the trou-sers. One night, on themotorboat taking us both toLido, I told him that his

Npainting was to me ironic, attimes caricatured like in DeChirico’s manikins where theheads slightly touch eachother producing the soundSchuick!, a sneer of splittowards the Pop Art that wasthen very much used. I don’tremember the exact wordsbut that was the gist. Prattgazed at me, he was perhapssurprised. I didn’t mean toplay the part of the critic butI always believed that hisway of proposing himself asa painter depended on thefact that numerous comic-book creators suffered froman inferiority complex withrespect to the so-called“serious” artists. «In 1965 Idefined my own “pictorial”scheme – wrote Pratt on Sgt.Kirk of December 1967 –That is to say, my necessity ofrecounting is clear also inpainting, as the titles of myexhibitions suggest». Pratt’sthird and last exhibition,always at the ‘Elefante’, wastitled “Brr, Brr, The WinterBritish Grenadiers”. It re-mained on show fromDecember 1967 till February1968, and yet no mention ofit was made in the localmagazines. Not even oneline, as far as I verified, wasdedicated to him. The artistexhibited a series of xero-graphies where some detailsof the traditional uniform ofthe grenadiers of the Queenwere exaggerated and rende-red, at times, unrecognisableyet lively in their close per-spective. I was unable to visitit and, when Hugo told meoff because of it, I told him Iwas in Nizza, disguised as aSpanish nobleman on the setof a movie on pirates. In aninterview held at the comicbook festival in Lucca in1968, published on the

Nemmenouna riga, da quanto ho con-statato, le venne dedicata.L’artista vi presentava unaserie di xerografie dove risul-tavano ingigantiti, resi avolte quasi irriconoscibilieppure vivaci nelle estra-nianti prospettive ravvicina-te, particolari della tradizio-nale uniforme da granatieredella Regina. Mancai di visi-tarla e, quando Hugo me lorimproverò, dissi che stavo aNizza, travestito da nobilespagnolo sul set d’un film dipirati. In un’intervista rac-colta al Salone dei Comics diLucca 1968, pubblicata sullarivista francese Phenix, adomanda se esercitava altre

I tried toproduce something else…adifferent type of art. Pop Artis an enlarged cartoon.Whereas I take one part ofmy drawings and I enlarge it.Not the entire picture. I takeone centimetre large partand expand it up to 2metres, making it abstract.Yet, it still remains a comic».The method of puttingtogether the details of adrawing, thus creating wittysquares, was used by Pratt insome Sgt. Kirk coverpages.The posters of the grenadierswere redeveloped, duringthe mounting, for the samemagazine (1968) and used ascover of a watercolour cata-logue for the exhibition atthe Grand Palais in Paris,1986. Whereas the previousworks were rarely encounte-red in exhibitions, the xero-graphies of the WinterBritish Grenadier were tobecome the symbol of a pro-vocative incursion, a trendthat was soon abandoned. By enjoying himself and bysending the then definitemessage (or rather sneer?),the future master of Mala-mocco showed an expressiveand technical capacity thatwas somehow separatedfrom the artistic activity ofthe comic and that couldreach other valuable inspira-tional products. Hugo, atalented artistic exhibitioni-st. Basically a genius.

Pur sem-pre restando un fumet-to». Il sistema di mon-tare, facendone deidivertenti quadrati, iparticolari dei disegni, Prattlo utilizzò per alcune coper-tine del Sgt. Kirk. Le gigan-tografie dei granatieri venne-ro rielaborate, in un montag-gio, sempre per la stessa rivi-sta (1968) e usate comecopertina d’un catalogod’acquarelli per l’esposizioneal Grand Palais di Parigi,1986. Viste di rado nei cir-cuiti le precedenti opere, lexerografie dei Winter BritishGrenadier diventeranno ilsimbolo d’una simpaticamen-te “provocatoria” incursione,un filone presto abbandonato. Divertendosi e lanciando l’allo-ra definito messaggio (o piutto-sto, uno sberleffo?), il futuroMaestro di Malamocco dimo-strava una capacità espressivae tecnica che prescindeva dal-l’attività di artista del fumettoe che poteva raggiungerealtri, pregevoli sbocchi ispira-tivi. Hugo, un esibizionista arti-stico di talento. Praticamenteun genio.

NORTHSOUTHEASTWESTA photographic exhibition investigates the current situation of the Earth in relation to the ongoing climatechanges and its consequences. Ten leading press photographers of different nationality, members of thefamous Magnum Agency, will present around twenty photographs of great effect taken from the four cor-ners of the world: from the increase in temperature responsible for the melting of the perpetual snows on theKilimanjaro and of the glaciers in Greenland, uncovering larger and larger areas of rock that had remainedhidden for over eleven thousand years, to the slow erosion of the beaches uprooting coco palms – sourceof survival for the inhabitants of the Marshall islands –, from the incredible pollution level in Mexico City toforms of renewable energy tested in countries at the cutting edge like Japan, Great Britain and the UnitedStates. This initiative is part of the campaign for raising the public opinion’s awareness on climate changelaunched in 2005 by the British Council and The Climate Group.
NORTHSOUTHEASTWESTUna mostra fotografica indaga lo stato attuale della Terra in rapporto ai cambiamenti climatici in attoe alle loro conseguenze. Dieci grandi fotoreporter di nazionalità diversa, tutti membri della famosaagenzia Magnum, si cimentano in una ventina di scatti di grande effetto, dai quattro angoli del pia-neta: dall’innalzamento della temperatura che provoca lo scioglimento delle nevi perenni sulKilimanjaro e dei ghiacci in Groenlandia, scoprendo sempre maggiori porzioni di roccia nascoste da
oltre undicimila anni alla lenta erosione delle spiagge che sradica le palme da cocco, fonte di sopravvivenza per gli abitantidelle isole Marshall; dall’incredibile livello dell’inquinamento atmosferico a Città del Messico a forme di energia rinnovabilesperimentate nei paesi più avanzati come in Giappone, Gran Bretagna e Stati Uniti. L’iniziativa rientra all’interno della cam-pagna di sensibilizzazione dell’opinione pubblica sulla questione dei cambiamenti climatici lanciata nel 2005 dal BritishCouncil e The Climate Group.

What if we ask ourselves what unites a ritual idol of a civiliza-tion belonging to a remote past and a portrait of De Chirico?A vanitas or a seventeenth century still life and a ripped can-
vas by Fontana? Is there a tie between the hangings made of empty cansby El Anatsui and the fabrics created by the Mariano Fortuny’s work-shop? And is there a common and timeless language in art – notwith-standing its inevitable diversities of origin, nature and form – that canlead us to state, with the Greek philosopher Zenone, or with Einstein,or with Picasso, that time in reality does not exist? The large exhibitionproject “Artempo - Where time becomes art” – on view from June 9 toOctober 7 at the Fortuny Museum which is ready to accept, for the firsttime after numerous years, the around 300 works by the 80 artistsdisplayed – attempts to find an answer to such a question. The humanexperience is permeated by the endeavour, through any means andform, of explaining and investigated time, which influences our life.There is a cosmic, immense time in which man appears from the lastfragments before the stroke of an hypothetic midnight arriving 24 hours(in reality 14 billion years) after the Big-Bang. And there is the time ofhuman History – conceived as the memory that determines our iden-tity (thus dating back to some thousand years ago) – that represents buta small part of the time of our planet. These are examples of unidirec-tional time (i.e. from the past till today), but there is also a time ofmemories, that is more important than the flowing of hours and minu-tes, or a time of sleep…that is potentially different for each of us. Thenotion of time has been repeatedly discussed also in relation with artand one may say that the time that has overseen the creation of worksof art is very much different, depending on whether they belong tomodernity or to other periods and cultures. Just like the time of emo-tions does not correspond to the time of a watch. The exhibition – asrecalls his creator Axel Vervoordt, the Belgian collector who has lentthe vast majority of the works on view – investigates these very aspectsand places emphasis on timelessness, i.e. on the absence of “time”, theperception of vacuum and deep vacuum as source of everything, in oneword: on the work of art that belongs to all times. Extraordinary theworks of art and the artists on exhibition: from rare and preciousarchaeological pieces to contemporary works by artists like FrancisBacon, Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, James Turrell, Pablo Picasso,Medardo Rosso and Andy Warhol, and by the very Fortuny.

Esiste un rapporto tra gli arazzi di lattine vuote di El Anatsui e i tessuticreati dal laboratorio di Mariano Fortuny? Infine, si può riscontrare unlinguaggio comune e senza tempo nell’arte - pur nelle sue inevitabilidiversità d’origine, natura e forma - così da poter giungere ad affermare,con il filosofo greco Zenone, o con Einstein, o con Picasso, che il tempoin realtà non esiste? A questi quesiti tenta di rispondere il grande pro-getto espositivo “Artempo - Where time becomes art”, allestito dal 9giugno al 7 ottobre al Museo Fortuny per la prima volta, dopo moltianni, aperto ad accogliere le circa 300 opere degli oltre 80 artisti presen-ti. L’esperienza umana è permeata dal tentativo, attraverso ogni mezzo eforma, di spiegare e di relazionarsi con il tempo ed il tempo stesso con-diziona la nostra vita. Esiste un tempo cosmico, immenso, in cui l’uomoappare solo a partire dagli ultimi frammenti prima dello scoccare di un’i-potetica mezzanotte che giunge 24 ore (in realtà 14 miliardi di anni)dopo il Big-Bang; e c’è il tempo della Storia umana – intesa come lamemoria che determina la percezione della nostra identità (che risalequindi solo fino a qualche millennio di anni fa) – che non rappresenta senon una piccola parte di quello del nostro pianeta. Sono questi esempidi tempo unidirezionale (ovvero dal passato ad oggi), ma esiste anche untempo dei ricordi, più importante dello scorrere di ore e minuti o untempo del sonno, potenzialmente di diversa durata, per ognuno. Lanozione di tempo è stata discussa molte volte anche in rapporto all’artee si può dire che il tempo che ha presidiato alla creazione di opere d’ar-te è molto diverso a seconda che esse appartengano alla modernità o adaltri periodi o culture, così come il tempo delle emozioni non corri-sponde a quello dell’orologio. La mostra - come ricorda il suo ideatoreAxel Vervoordt, il collezionista belga prestatore della maggior parte deicapolavori esposti - indaga proprio questi aspetti e si concentra sull’a-temporalità (non-temporalità), ovvero sull’assenza di “tempo”, la sen-sazione di vuoto e il vuoto inteso come fonte di tutte le cose, in unaparola: sull’opera d’arte che appartiene a tutti i tempi. Straordinarie leopere e gli artisti in mostra: si va da rari e preziosissimi pezzi archeolo-gici a installazioni contemporanee, passando per artisti come FrancisBacon, Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, James Turrell, Pablo Picasso,Medardo Rosso e Andy Warhol, oltre allo stesso Fortuny.

John Singer Sargent (Florence, 1856 – London, 1925), knownas one of the major Anglo-Saxon portraitists, explored thepotentiality of the so called painting “en plein air” that cap-
tures the most unusual and elusive spaces thus becoming themain exponent of American impressionism. Encouraged to paintfrom an early age by the well-read mother, in 1874 Sargent is inParis to attend the atelier of the famous Carolus-Duran. In 1876he makes the acquaintance of Monet, he leaves Paris for Londonand starts travelling in Italy, Switzerland, Egypt, Turkey, France,Spain…but – as it happened to numerous other great artists –only Venice captures his most intense emotions. A passion thatwill lead to the creation, between 1879 and 1913, of over onehundred and fifty oils and watercolours, as it is clear from theexhibition on show until July, 22nd at the Museo Correr, whichproposes, for the fist time in this city, a selection of over fiftypaintings borrowed from outstanding public and private collec-tions. Extraordinary – being painted from a gondola – his“views”: masterpieces in which his artful technique perfectlydepicts the light and water effects on the Grand Canal(“Gondolier’s Siesta”; “Under the Rialto”), yet equally visibile inthe indoor and overall views (“Sortie de l’église”).

Incoraggiato fin da giovanissimodalla colta madre alla pratica della pittura, Sargent nel 1874 è a Parigiper frequentare l’atelier del noto ritrattista Carolus-Duran. Nel 1876conosce Monet, quindi lascia Parigi per Londra e comincia a viaggia-re tra Italia, Svizzera, Egitto, Grecia, Turchia, Francia, Spagna…ma -così come avvenne per molti altri grandi artisti - solo Venezia catturòle sue più intense emozioni. In quarant’anni la visitò una dozzina divolte. Un amore che produrrà, tra il 1879 e il 1913, oltre centocin-quanta olii e acquerelli, come documenta la mostra allestita fino al 22luglio al Museo Correr, che propone – per la prima volta in città - unaselezione di oltre cinquanta dipinti, provenienti da importanti colle-zioni pubbliche e private. Saturday June 7, 2007, at 18.30, will see the opening of Salvo’ssecond personal exhibition titled “Salvo Venezia” at the BugnoGallery in Campo S. Fantin. After the success of the large retro-spective presented at the GAM of Turin, Salvo will exhibit aseries of new works dedicated to the city of Venice and aselection of recent works. Salvo (Salvatore Mangione) wasborn in 1947 in Leonforte in Sicily but he has been living andworking since the early 60s in Turin. After a first conceptualperiod, in 1975 he goes back to painting where he is rankedamong the most outstanding Italian artists.
Sabato 9 giugno 2007 alle ore 18.30 presso la Galleria Bugno inCampo San Fantin si inaugura la seconda mostra personale diSalvo dal titolo “Salvo Venezia”. Reduce dai successi dellagrande retrospettiva presso la GAM di Torino Salvo esporrà unaserie di opere inedite dedicate alla città di Venezia ed unaselezione di lavori recenti. Salvo (Salvatore Mangione) nascenel 1947 a Leonforte in Sicilia ma dai primi anni ’60 vive e lavo-ra a Torino. IN FAVOUR OF WOLF-FERRARISo much was the Venetian composer ErmannoWolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) celebrated during his lifetime for having provided Carlo Goldoni’s plays withprecious music, so much seems his memory tohave been removed today, even in his native city.Meritorious is thus the initiative of reviving the reper-toire that had met wide consensus in Italy as well asabroad, thanks to the Quintet Wolf-Ferrari foundedby Anna Lazzarini. The Quintet not only includes thisfine pianist, but also the violinists Carlo Lazzari and
Paola Carraro, Mario Paladin at the viola and Carlo Teodoro at the cello.Within the framework of a program that aims at extending the knowled-ge of music among young people, the Wolf-Ferrari ensemble organizesat the highschool “Liceo Ginnasio Marco Polo” in the Accademia areaa series of events coordinated by Francesco Rizzoli and titled “TheSaturday concerts at the highschool Liceo Marco Polo”. To the power-ful Quintet Wolf-Ferrari and to its moving spirit Anna Lazzarini goes notonly the wish that their activity continues with great artistic and publicsuccess but also deep congratulations!
Tanto il compositore veneziano Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) vennecelebrato in vita per aver “rivestito” di preziosa musica le commedie diCarlo Goldoni, quanto adesso la sua memoria appare rimossa, anchenella sua città natale. Meritoria appare, dunque, l’iniziativa di riproporne ilrepertorio che conobbe vasti consensi in Italia e all’estero, dovuta alQuintetto Wolf-Ferrari fondato da Anna Lazzarini. Oltre a questa brava pia-nista, comprende i violinisti Carlo Lazari e Paola Carraro, Mario Paladin allaviola e Carlo Teodoro al violoncello. The church of San Giacomo dall’Orio stands in one of the few campi (squares) in Venice thatstill preserves a folk-live and town-like nature, situated off the typically tourist itineraries. Itsexterior is simple, while its interior enshrines a number of outstanding works of art by PaoloVeronese, Jacopo Palma il Giovane and Paolo Veneziano. The peculiarity of the church liesin its ceiling: built after 1345, it features “ship’s-keel” decorations, with larch wood lacunarsunderpinned on the sides by the supporting structures known as “barbicani”. This particularcovering structure, able to contain the temperatures of cold winters and hot summers, ischaracteristic of the Venetian churches of that time and somehow recalles the “amphi-bious” nature of the Serenissima Republic, whose power derived, as it is widespreadlyknown, from the power of the war and merchant fleets. It’s marvellous 3,35 meter high greenIonic column, made with one single marble block, of Greek craftsmanship, was brought toVenice at the beginning of the thirteenth century. Down the centuries, numerous writers,
poets, historians have described it, calling it “joy”, as Jacopo Sansovino did, or “precious pearl” as John Ruskin did.Gabriele D’Annunzio, in 1900, stated that, with its streaks and different shade tinges, “it looks like the fossil condensationof a large verdant wood”.
La Chiesa di San Giacomo dall’Orio sorge in uno dei pochi campi che, a Venezia, conservano un carattere popolaree cittadino, lontano dagli itinerari più propriamente turistici. L’esterno è semplice e pulito, mentre all’interno sono con-servate alcune importanti opere di Paolo Veronese, Jacopo Palma il Giovane, Paolo Veneziano. La particolarità dellachiesa sta nel soffitto: costruito dopo il 1345, presenta una decorazione “a carena di nave”, a cassettoni lignei di lari-ce sostenuti ai lati dai tipici “barbacani”. Questa copertura, adatta a mitigare la temperatura dei freddi inverni e dellecalde estati, è tipica delle chiese veneziane dell’epoca, e ricorda la natura anfibia della Serenissima, il cui potere,com’è noto, era fondato sulla potenza delle flotte belliche e mercantili. Bellissima è la colonna ionica in verde antico,realizzata con un blocco unico di marmo e alta 3,35 m. Di lavorazione greca, fu portata a Venezia agli inizi del 1200, enei secoli molti scrittori, poeti, storici la descrissero, ammirati, chiamandola “gioia” come Jacopo Sansovino, o “perlapreziosa” come John Ruskin. Gabriele D’Annunzio, nel 1900, affermò che, con le sue striature e venature di toni diver-si, “sembra la condensazione fossile di una immensa foresta verdeggiante”.

The church of the Jesuits was builtbetween 1726 and 1735, it was com-missioned by Dominicans, after theytook the place of the Jesuits, in order toreplace the small church that still standsbeside it. Giorgio Massari was the authorof the church’s design and of the internaldecoration, assisted by two great artistsof the period: Giambattista Tiepolo andGianmaria Morlaiter. The interior, withits single nave, side chapels and a deeppresbytery, is beautifully balanced. To see: the altarpiece and the ceiling byG.B. He designed a templehaving a central area on an octagonalplan, dominated by a huge domewith great arches. The top in a melting-pot. A series of unprecedented exhibitions andevents. Venice make its entrance in the Biennale 2007 with a numberof appointments that art lovers certainly cannot miss. Matthew Barney
in an original parallel with Joseph Beuys at the Guggenheim, Bertozzi &Casoni at Ca’Pesaro with an imposing project titled “The Lies of Art”, EnzoCucchi - one of the masters of Transavanguardia - in an anthological exhibi-tion at the Correr Museum, but also Richard Hamilton, father of the Englishpop art, who brings a new project at the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masaand Damien Hirst at Palazzo Pesaro Papafava. Those are only some of thenames that will be present in the various exhibition areas of the city, not coun-ting the most awaited event, that is to say the Biennale. In this year’s edition,under the guidance of Robert Storr, directly from the MOMA of New York,the Biennale will feature a number of outstanding novelties such as the ope-ning of the new Italy pavilion with an exhibition managed by Ida Gianelli andthe reappearance of a selection of artists from the Veneto region in the Venicepavilion. Particular emphasis will be placed on African contemporary art withan exhibition titled “Check List Luanda Pop” and with the opening of Turkey’snational pavilion. The most awaited projects include the new production byFrancesco Vezzoli – who returns at the Biennale of Venice after the great suc-cess achieved in the past edition – and the presence, among others, of artistslike Jenny Holzer, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Guillermo Kuitca, Sol LeWitt,Steve McQueen, Bruce Nauman, Raymond Pettibon, Gerhard Richter,Nancy Spero and Franz West. What is more, a new institute for contempo-rary art can now be found in the city, i.e. Monsieur Pinault’s new PalazzoGrassi that opened one month ago with a collective exhibition titledSEQUENCE, comprising a marvellous selection of his infinite collection.

Hamilton - BVLMRichard Hamilton will take possession of the ‘Palazzetto Tito’ for his personalexhibition “A Host Of Angels” by rethinking it and adapting it for it to includethe entire exhibition area of the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa. Hamiltonwill interpret the spaces not only by exhibiting 13 large and medium size can-vases, but also by including furniture, objects and fittings requested by the arti-st himself, in a play of continuous references to the perspectives on the canvasand the ones of the scenery. The route will start with the portraits of the depar-ted friends Dieter Roth and Derek Jarman and with a graphic elaboration of adomestic space, Chiara & chair, in which the creation of the image, the hori-zon lines and the vanishing-points are uncovered by the artist himself, whoshows from the start the dual soul of his latest works. Since the 90s, Hamiltonwent from portraying figures of the folk iconography to more intimist works.He starts building up the image with pictures he has taken, or with postcardsof fair quality. He then transposes them on the canvas through graphic pro-grammes, thus recreating an environment that is perfectly in keeping with theongoing actions. The Angels, as he himself calls them, are therefore familiarfigures, the lifelong friends, the intimate situations, the interiors of his house.Virgin-like and angelic women who hint at Duchamp’s Brides and Virgins.This is Hamilton’s first personal exhibition in Italy.
Richard Hamilton prenderà possesso di Palazzetto Tito per la sua personale “AHost Of Angels”, ripensandolo e adattandolo per coinvolgere tutta la sede espo-sitiva della fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa. Hamilton interpreterà gli spazi nonlimitandosi alla semplice esposizione delle 13 tele di grandi e medie dimensio-ni, ma includendo mobili, oggetti e arredi voluti dall’artista stesso, in un gioco dirimandi continui tra le prospettive sulla tela e quelle presenti nello spazio.Il per-corso si aprirà con i ritratti degli amici scomparsi Dieter Roth e Derek Jarman eun’elaborazione grafica di uno spazio domestico, Chiara & chair, in cui lacostruzione dell’immagine, le linee d’orizzonte e i punti di fuga sono messi anudo dall’artista stesso, che ci mostra da subito la doppia anima dei suoi ulti-mi lavori. Dagli anni ’90 Hamilton è passato dal ritrarre personaggi dell’ico-nografia popolare a lavori più intimistici. Costruisce l’immagine partendo dafotografie da lui stesso scattate, o cartoline di bassa foggia. Poi le traspone sullatela attraverso programmi di grafica evoluti, ricreando un ambiente perfetta-mente consono alle azioni in essere. Così gli Angels, come lui stesso li chia-ma, sono i personaggi familiari, gli amici di sempre, le situazioni intime, gliinterni della sua casa. Donne virginee e angeliche che alludono alle ducham-piane Brides e Virgins. La mostra è la prima personale di Hamilton in Italia.
Cucchi - Museo CorrerEnzo Cucchi, undisputed master and key figure of Transavanguardia, arrivesat the Correr Museum with an exhibition comprising a selection of works andpictorial cycles created by the artist from the 70s till today. For Cucchidrawing and painting means combining forms, concepts and materials. Theexpression of the gesture is used to transform the canvas, or the paper in thecase of drawings, into a magic territory full of images and thoughts carryingon an idea that is enriched with an infinite series of different elements. Cucchidepicts a large variety of classical as well as imaginary symbols that are com-bined together and overlapped in a same chromatic frame from which theyalmost seem to emerge. The abandoning of the space-time lines and the con-tinuous incursions into the cultural and emotional spheres coincides with theundisciplined use of colour and the willingness to try new artistic techniqueslike burned paper and sand oil. Through a carefully thought route, the exhi-bition will offer the opportunity of admiring over 100 paintings and drawings,borrowed from outstanding museums such as the Guggenheim of New Yorkand Bilbao, the Louisiana Museum for Moderne Kunst of Humlebæk, theStedelijk of Amsterdam, the Kunsthaus of Zurich, the Kunsthalle of Hamburg,the Castello di Rivoli (Rivoli Castle) of Turin and many others.

Per Cucchi disegnare e dipingere significa associare forme, concetti emateriali. L’espressione del gesto viene utilizzata per trasformare la tela, o lacarta nel caso dei disegni, in un territorio magico pieno di immagini e pen-sieri veicolo di un discorso che si arricchisce di una serie infinita di elemen-ti differenti. Cucchi rappresenta un’ampia gamma di simboli che provengo-no da temi classici o di pura fantasia che vengono combinati insieme esovrapposti nella stessa trama cromatica da cui sembrano quasi emergere.L’abbandono delle coordinate spazio-temporali e le sue continue incursioninei territori culturali ed emozionali coincide con un uso del colore indisci-plinato e la volontà di sperimentare con tecniche artistiche differenti chevanno dalla carta bruciata, all’olio alla sabbia. Attraverso un percorso espo-sitivo attentamente studiato, la mostra offrirà l’occasione per poter ammira-re oltre cento tra dipinti e disegni, provenienti da grandi istituzioni musealitra cui il Guggenheim di New York e di Bilbao, il Louisiana Museum forModerne Kunst di Humlebæk, lo Stedelijk di Amsterdam, il Kunsthaus diZurigo, il Kunsthalle di Amburgo, il Castello di Rivoli di Torino e molti altri.

Sequence (1) - Palazzo GrassiWith this first exhibition of a “sequence” dedicated to the distinctivemarks and the strengths of the modern art collection by FrançoisPinault, a new exhibition series dedicated to contemporary art will beinaugurated by Palazzo Grassi. The first appointment, organized byAlison M. Gingeras, will put on show the works by sixteen artists –painters and sculptors – presenting works in which the principle ofhandicraft in contemporary art is stressed, through all the traditionalcreative genres. The presence of the ‘hand’ of the artist is highligh-ted through the display of works by an heterogeneous variety of arti-sts that still base their work on various expressions of ‘craft art’ thuswidening the traditional sphere of painting and sculpture with neworiginal interpretations and inventions. The painters involved bring tothe fore numerous different approaches, from the “traditional” oiland/or acrylic on canvas to experimental revisions of the “pictorial”.If on the one side, the “traditional” group proposes works by MartialRaysse, Laura Owens, Marlene Dumas, Takashi Murakami, andRichard Prince, the experimental one sees artists like Rudolf Stingelexploring “the idea” of painting through a synthesis of environmentalinstallation, process art and conventional “paintings”.
Con questa prima esposizione di una sequenza dedicata ai segnidistintivi e ai punti di forza della collezione di arte contemporanea diFrançois Pinault, è stata inaugurata a Palazzo Grassi una nuova serieespositiva dedicata all’arte contemporanea. Il primo appuntamento, acura di Alison M. Gingeras, presenta le opere di sedici artisti – pitto-ri e scultori - proponendo lavori in cui si evidenzia il principio di arti-gianalità nell’arte contemporanea, attraverso tutti i tradizionali genericreativi. Viene messa in luce la presenza della ‘mano’ dell’artista pre-sentando una gamma eterogenea di artisti che si basano su varieespressioni di ‘craft art’ ampliando il campo tradizionale della pitturae della scultura con nuove interpretazioni originali e invenzioni. I pit-tori inclusi evidenziano molteplici approcci diversi, dal “tradizionale”olio e/o acrilico su tela a revisioni sperimentali del “pittorico”. Barney/Beuys - GuggenheimMatthew Barney and Joseph Beuys, separated for geographical aswell as generational reasons, are placed side by side in an exhibitionanalysing the affinities and points in common both from an aestheticand conceptual point of view. All in The Present Must BeTransformed will revolve around the metaphoric use of materials, theartist’s interest in metamorphosis, their predilection for the use of nar-rative structures and the relation between action and research in theirjob field thus revealing at the same time the profound philosophicaldifferences, fundamentally depending on historical reasons, that areuseful for understanding their works. The works on view will beselected from the permanent collection of the Guggenheim Museumand will be accompanied by a double selection of the artists’drawings and representative works, like for instance Barney’s multi-ple sculpture Chrysler Imperial (2002) from Cremaster 3 and Beuys’installation Terremoto –Earthquake (1981). For organizational rea-sons the event will be hosted in the exhibition areas of PalazzoVenier dei Leoni, traditionally dedicated to the Peggy Guggenheimpermanent collection which will exceptionally be moved to the hallsof the museum destined to temporary exhibitions.

All in The Present Must Be Transformed ruoterà intornoall’uso metaforico dei materiali, all’interesse degli artisti per le meta-morfosi, la loro predilezione per l’uso di strutture narrative e la rela-zione tra azione e documentazione nel loro lavoro, rivelando allo stes-so tempo le profonde differenze filosofiche, dovute principalmente amotivi storici, che in ultima analisi aiutano nella comprensione delloro lavoro. Le opere esposte saranno scelte dalla collezione perma-nente del Museo Guggenheim e saranno accompagnate da una dop-pia selezione di disegni e vetrine dei due artisti, come ad esempio lascultura multipla di Barney Chrysler Imperial (2002) da Cremaster 3 el’installazione di Beuys Terremoto (1981). Hirst - Palazzo PapafavaEach of Damien Hirst’s exhibitions has now become an event in it self.This time, the exhibition area of Palazzo Pesaro Papafava will host 30works including prints, photos, sculptures and installations, as well asa new triptych. In New Religion Hirst’s analysis dwells once again onthe relation between life and death. He does it by addressing theissues of religion and medicine through recurrent symbols like crosses,skulls, chalices, doves that ambiguously mingle with pharmaceuticalsand surgical instruments, the latter of which are proper icons alreadyknown from previous works (pill paintings, Medical Cabinets,Pharmacy). In a series of sculptures, photographs and prints – in whichhe forges, in a provocative attitude, a new religion that blends scien-ce and Christological aesthetics – Hirst resorts to episodes and cha-racters from the New and Old Testament do give life to a new icono-graphy with works that look like medicines. Pills that become objectsof worship, surgical wounds depicted as stigmata. It is science that“materially” makes life longer by seducing man with the illusionistsearch for immortality, the end of pain and, in general, with the pro-mise of salvation that religion has always been promising.
Ogni mostra di Damien Hirst è ormai un evento in sé, in questo casonegli spazi di Palazzo Pesaro Papafava, saranno in esposizione, circa30 lavori, fra stampe, foto, sculture e installazioni, unitamente a untrittico inedito. In New Religion, l’analisi di Hirst si sofferma ancorauna volta sul rapporto tra vita e morte, affrontando il tema della reli-gione e della medicina attraverso una serie di simboli ricorrenti qualicroci, teschi, calici, colombe che si confondono ambiguamente confarmaci e strumenti chirurgici, questi ultimi, vere e proprie icone giànote nelle opere precedenti (pill paintings, Medical Cabinets,Pharmacy). Con una serie di sculture, fotografie e stampe in cui, nonsenza provocazione, plasma una nuova religione che mette insiemescienza ed estetica cristologica, Hirst prende come riferimento epi-sodi e personaggi del Nuovo e Vecchio Testamento per dare vita auna nuova iconografica attraverso opere che assumono le sembian-ze di medicinali. Fra pillole che diventano oggetti di culto e feritechirurgiche raffigurate come stigmate, è la scienza a prolungare“materialmente” la vita, seducendo l’uomo con l’illusoria ricerca diimmortalità, la fine del dolore e, in generale, quella promessa di sal-vezza che la religione promette da sempre.
Bertozzi & Casoni - Ca'PesaroWith Le Bugie dell’Arte (the lies of art) Bertozzi & Casoni reflect upon theprocess of deconstruction and negation of monumentality, both from thepoint of view of the object and the concept, constituting one of the constantsof contemporary artistic expressions. While denying monumentality and thepopular authoritative forms, they were affirming their own forms with aproud and authoritarian arrogance, just as it happens when one smiles andunconsciously shows also the teeth. These ambiguous double aspects unco-ver the unconscious lie of art: everything has to change if nothing is to chan-ge, thus asserting – paradoxically – a cyclical universality of the aestheticroute. The instruments and languages of this new monumentality belong toan inexhaustible and tested repertoire that is subject to a process of newappropriation, production and interpretation with an aim at giving it a newcontext in contemporaneity. Bertozzi & Casoni’s works, as usual in ceramic,well represent their repertoire and figurative imagery: objects, bits of nature,portrayal of animals, as well as art “icons” presented in the shape of discardsand waste or in bad condition. In the Ca’Pesaro exhibition, three imposinginstallations will entirely occupy the hall of the museum which will be usedby the artist to create a sort of unusual visual short circuit.
Con Le Bugie dell’Arte Bertozzi & Casoni si interrogano sul processo didecostruzione e negazione della monumentalità, oggettuale o concettuale,che costituisce una delle costanti delle espressioni artistiche contempora-nee. Mentre si nega la monumentalità e le forme autorevoli in voga, si lavo-ra per affermare le proprie con orgogliosa e autoritaria arroganza, comeavviene in chi sorride e inconsapevolmente mostra anche i denti. Questoambiguo doppio svela l’inconsapevole bugia dell’arte: bisogna che tuttocambi affinché nulla cambi, affermando così – paradossalmente– una cicli-ca universalità del percorso estetico. Gli strumenti e i linguaggi di questanuova monumentalità appartengono a un inesauribile e collaudato reper-torio che viene sottoposto a un processo di riappropriazione, riproduzionee reinterpretazione al fine di ricontestualizzarlo nella contemporaneità. Sitratta di lavori, come sempre per Bertozzi & Casoni in ceramica, che benrappresentano il loro repertorio e immaginario figurativo: oggetti d’uso, por-zioni di natura, rappresentazioni di animali tratti dalla realtà, oltre a fedeliriproposte di alcune “icone” dell’arte presentate preferibilmente sotto formadi scarti, rifiuti o in condizioni di degrado. Nella mostra di Ca’ Pesaro, tregigantesche installazioni occuperanno interamante l’atrio del museo di cuigli artisti si approprieranno per costruire un insolito corto circuito visivo.

Ai 21 finalisti selezionati è stata offertal’opportunità di partecipare ad un workshop aMurano, della durata di 5 giorni, durante ilquale hanno potuto dar vita al proprio proget-to con la collaborazione di alcuni Maestri delVetro presso le aziende aderenti al Consorzio.La cerimonia di premiazione si è svolta il 3aprile nella splendida cornice del Casinò diVenezia che ha ospitato una serata di gala incui gli oggetti realizzati dai Maestri del Vetro,in collaborazione con i nuovi designer, sonostati messi a disposizione di tutti gli invitati chese li sono aggiudicati con una libera offerta. Ilricavato è stato poi devoluto in beneficenza alProgramma Alimentare Mondiale delle Na-zioni Unite. Al termine della serata quindi leopere sono finite nelle mani di coloro che sele sono aggiudicate ma l’ambizioso obiettivoè quello di poterle esporre nelle più impor-tanti sedi museali del mondo facendo inmodo che il concorso, oggi alla suaprima edizione, possa divenire unappuntamento costante di indagine econfronto con nuove idee di respirointernazionale, capace cioè di avvici-nare una tradizione millenaria e digrande valore ad un pubblico vastodi progettisti incuriositi e attirati daquesto mondo fatto di passione,vetro e cultura. Agreat success with over 400 projectscoming from 41 countries to representall continents. For the first time in the
history of this ancient art, the ‘ConsorzioPromovetro’ wanted to bring into contact thecentury-long and unique tradition of the glassproducts created in the island of Murano withthe entire world’s creativity. It has done it bylaunching the competition The Heart ofVenice. Twenty one finalists have been offeredthe opportunity of participating in a 5 dayworkshop in Murano during which they havegiven life to their own projects, with the coope-ration of a number of Masters of Glass, in thecompanies taking part in the Consorzio. Theprize-giving ceremony took place on April 3 inthe superb scenery of the Venice Casino whichhosted the gala night. The objects, created bythe Masters of Glass with the cooperation of thenew designers, were displayed during this eve-ning. Guests had the opportunity of knockingthem down with a free offer, the proceeds ofwhich have been given to charity to the UnitedNations World Food Programme. At the end ofthe evening the objects ended up in the handsof those who “have won” them, yet the ambi-tious goal is that of having the opportunity toexhibit them in the most outstanding museumsof the world thus enabling the competition, cur-rently at its first edition, to become a constantappointment embracing new ideas of interna-tional call and able to bring a century-long tra-dition of great value closer to the wide public ofdesigners filled with curiosity and attracted tothis world made of passion, glass and culture.

The Port of ArtGianmaria PotenzaGianmaria Potenza exhibits at the Port of Venice with an enti-rely new formula. Fifteen sculptures of huge dimensions forgedwith the Master’s favourite material, copper, will dominate thedock of the palace and the Isonzo dock, whereas the smallersculptures will be on view on the first floor, in the Torcello hall.The exhibition is a homage to the great Venetian Master, to hisbond with the city and to his love for the immensity of the sea,the fervour of the ports and the complex architecture of theships. The refined search for materials, the absolute mastery inmoulding matter in Potenza’s works are clear signs of the arti-san’s skill and noble tradition combined with innovation andthe use of new techniques and languages.

280 grams rise of the “vialone nano” typewhite asparagus from Giare a handful peas, 2 courgettes, 2 carrots1 artichoke heart, 1 white onion 1 a piece of yellow pepper, white wine 1 litres of vegetal or chicken broth1 knob of butter, Grana Padano cheese
TIMBALLO DELL’ORTOLANO Ingredienti per quattro persone:

1 litro di brodo vegetale 1 noce di burro, Grana Padano, vino bianco

Wash and chop the vegetables. Cook the carrots,peas and courgettes in a frying-pan with a bit ofbutter and do the same with the rest of the vege-tables in another pan. In the mean time fry thechopped onions in a casserole without browningthem. Add some wine and let it evaporate. Thenadd the rise, salt it and cook it by continuouslyadding boiling broth bit by bit. When the rise isalmost done add the previously cooked vegeta-bles. Cream with the grated Grana Padano. Turnthe cooker off and stir the rise with a knob of but-ter. Serve after a few minutes.
Mondare, lavare le verdure e tagliarle a pezzetti-ni. Farle cuocere in una padella con poco burro,ciascuna separatamente, mettendo insieme solocarote, piselli e zucchine. Intanto far rosolare inuna casseruola la cipolla tritata, senza farleprendere colore. Bagnare con vino, farlo evapo-rare. Posare il riso, salarlo e portarlo a cotturatenendolo sempre bagnato con il brodo moltocaldo. Quasi a fine cottura inserire le verdure giàcotte e il Grana Padano grattugiato. Mantecarecon una noce di burro a fuoco spento e serviredopo qualche minuto.

Sulla tavola torna l’asparago. La sua è una storia assai lungache si può far risalire alla terra d'Oriente dove nasceva spon-taneo e selvatico. Ebbe origine nelle zone temperate
dell'Asia (probabilmente in Mesopotamia), e in breve tempo funoto agli Egizi (che fra l'altro lo ponevano fra i doni che accom-pagnavano Nefertiti nel regno delle ombre), ai Greci (che gli attri-buivano proprietà afrodisiache) e ai Latini. Da sempre osannatocome una vera prelibatezza, in Italia l'asparago è pianta molto dif-fusa. Le coltivazioni più pregiate sono quelle del Veneto (i terrenisabbiosi del Chioggiotto e del Bassanese dettan legge), dell'EmiliaRomagna e del Piemonte. Il periodo di raccolta comincia verso lafine di marzo per continuare fino a tutto giugno. Vanno pulitiassai bene, raschiando accuratamente i gambi dai residui di terrae spuntandoli leggermente. Per la cottura è adatta una pentola altae stretta in cui gli asparagi vanno collocati in mazzo e con le punterivolte verso l'alto, emergenti dall'acqua per una decina di centi-metri. Lessati, gli asparagi sono apprezzati sia come antipasto siacome contorno, ma anche come piatto unico. Si può accompa-gnarli con salse calde e fredde o con uova sode, al burro o stra-pazzate; passarli nel burro e servirli - caldissimi e ben sgocciolati -con una spolverata di parmigiano grattugiato, oppure coprirli conuna buona besciamella e farli gratinare nel forno.
Asparagus reappears on the table. You can trace aspara-gus back to the Eastern Orient where it grew in thewild. Originally from Asia (most probably Meso-
potamia) it was soon introduced to the Egyptians ( who evenput some in the tomb of Queen Nefertiti), to the Greeks (whoheld it in high esteem for its aphrodisiac powers) and to theRomans. For a long time asparagus has been a delicacy inItalian cuisine, widely used. The areas most highly esteemedfor its growth are those in the Veneto (Chiogga and Bassanodel Grappa), Emilia Romagna and from Piemonte. The harvesting starts at the end of March and continuesthrough all of June. Clean well, scraping carefully away all the earthy residuefrom the stems and then trim them gently. A tall saucepan isideal in which to cook it, placing the asparagus tips pointingupwards and about 10cm out of the water. Boiled, asparagusis delicious as an “antipasto”, as a vegetable side dish or sim-ply as a meal in itself. It can be served with with hot or coldsauces, egg, either boiled or scrambled, or a little butter, hotand dripping with a dusting of grated parmesan.Alternatively cover the asparagus with a good white sauceand grill in the oven.

Padua celebrates Fulvio Pendini. The centenary of the birthis the occasion to rediscover a protagonist of the culturalscene of the city and country. His activity finds his place inthe past century artistic scenario of Padua: the “cantieredel Novecento al Bo”, wanted by Carlo Anti and directedby Gio Ponti, and the activities of the “Gruppo N”, leadingexponent of the optical-kinetic movements of the first six-ties. Fulvio Pendini is to be placed between those twoperiods, thus embodying the ideal figure of an artist who asbeen devoted, during his entire life, to painting startingfrom classicism through the lines of Giotto, to the use ofmore primitive twentieth-century lines based on the bustleof popular feasts in squares and yards and finally to stylisedMedieval representations of Padua and other cities.
Padova celebra Fulvio Pendini. Il centenario della nascita è l’oc-casione per riscoprire un protagonista della scena culturale cit-tadina e nazionale. La sua attività si colloca nello scenario arti-stico padovano del secolo scorso: il cantiere del Novecento alBo, voluto dal rettore Carlo Anti e diretto da Gio Ponti, e l’attivitàdel Gruppo N, esponente di punta dei movimenti ottico-cineti-ci nei primi anni sessanta. Fulvio Pendini si situa tra questi duemomenti, incarnando la figura ideale di un artista che si è dedi-cato per tutta la vita alla pittura partendo da un parco classici-smo neo-giottesco, per poi adottare una linea di primitivismonovecentista incentrata sull’animazione di feste popolari entroscenari di piazze e cortili e approdare infine alla rappresentazio-ne stilizzata di matrice medioevale di Padova e di altre città.

An organic selection of works, a complete retrospective exhibition on the artist from Rovigo, directed byVittorio Sgarbi and coordinated by Alessia Vedova. One hundred and fifty of the artist’s works, unseen onesas well, for an exhibition that allowed the return of a small nucleus of canvases, which even though intendedfor our country, were held in France. Cavaglieri’s artistic course will be documented in its entirety: from thedebut in Padua together with Felice Casorati to the great season of Ca’ Pesaro and the Venetian BiennaleExhibitions which consecrated the precious refinement of his art, up to the years of his retirement to theFrench countryside. The event will also be a precious opportunity to revisit the history, the contradictions andthe different influences of the early 1900 art, through the fascination and the mystery of Cavaglieri’s painting.
Una monografica organica, una retrospettiva completa quella sull’artista rodigino curata da VittorioSgarbi e coordinata di Alessia Vedova. Centocinquanta opere dell’artista, anche inedite, per una mostrache ha consentito il recupero all’Italia di un nucleo di tele che, pur destinate al nostro Paese, erano trat-tenute da decenni in Francia. Two hundred masterpieces, divided up into six sections, will be displayed in Verona from March25. The works are by Botticelli and Pontormo, Giorgione and Lotto, Tiziano, Tintoretto,Parmigianino and Carracci, Caravaggio and Guergino, El Greco and Fetti, Canova and Piranesi,Böcklin and De Chirico, Modigliani and Carrà, Paolini and Pistoletto, Parmiggiani and Barni andby many others more, including Michelangelo with a studio of a head for the Cappella Sistina inSan Pietro, that marks the profound melancholy of an artist who finds, in the darkness of matterthe secret miracle of shape.
