Stud manager Mick Malone is hoping Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1350m) contender Counterattack (Redoute’s Choice) can secure an elusive Group

One victory at Doomben tomorrow before the four-year-old retires to Kitchwin Hills this season.

The Chris Waller-trained entire will be having his final career start in the $1,500,000 race and Malone believes it would be fitting if the horse could win the handicap before returning to Kitchwin Hills, the stud where the Group Three winner was born.

Counterattack ($8.50) was runner-up in the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) on 13 May before finishing third to Stradbroke Handicap favourite Clearly Innocent (Not A Single Doubt)

($5) last start in the Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) at Eagle Farm on 27 May.

Bred by Geoff and Mary Grimish, Counterattack is a half-brother to The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Shellscrape (Dane Shadow) and dual Group One-winning mare Red Tracer (Dane Shadow) being out of Snippets (Lunchtime) mare Kisma.

New Zealand jockey Opie Bosson retains the ride from barrier two tomorrow.

“So many times he has been beaten by circumstances where he didn’t get a run, or was in the worst part of the track, he just seems to be one of those unlucky horses,” Malone told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“The last horse to go to stud by Redoute’s Choice out of a Snippets mare who was a really good physical was Snitzel and (Counterattack) is bred the same and looks the same and he is a fast son of Redoute’s Choice.”

Malone said he had inspected Counterattack a number of times since the horse ran in the Kingsford-Smith Cup at Waller’s Gold Coast base for the Queensland Winter Carnival.

“He won the Fred Best Classic over 1350 metres at Doomben, so he obviously likes the track, and I think drawing a pretty good barrier in two, which will help him pop out and find a spot three, four or five back,” he said.

“I’ve gone and looked at him a few times and he is a lovely horse who really looks the part and he is bucking his brands off.

“Fingers crossed, we are really excited about his chances in the Stradbroke.”

Malone said a service fee would be announced after Counterattack’s run in the Stradbroke Handicap.

“We couldn’t be happier with him and it would be a great way to go out (with a Group One win). A lot of people are asking what we are going to stand him for and said to give them a call when we’ve announced it.

“Geoff Grimish, who owns him, will be supporting him with all his mares and they are Easter sale quality, so he will be getting some nice mares, and when people see him in the Hunter they will understand where we are coming from.

“Geoff and Mary have been great supporters of ours and I am rapt that he is the first stallion we have stood with a Kitchwin brand on his shoulder, which is exciting.”

Godolphin-owned Stan Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) winner Impending (Lonhro) ($17) has drawn barrier 18 in the field of 16 plus five emergencies for tomorrow’s Stradbroke Handicap, with the three-year-old coming into the race on the back of a fourth-placed finish in the Kingsford-Smith Cup.

Trainer Darren Beadman said he would devise a plan with jockey Corey Brown in a bid to overcome Impending’s wide barrier.

“He’s come through the Group One race the other day without any issues and his last couple have been pretty good,” Beadman said.

“Since his last run he’s worked really well and actually put in an outstanding piece of work at the Gold Coast on Tuesday.

Friday 9 June 2017 Counterattack Aiming To Go Out On Stradbroke High

“Unfortunately, the barrier is going to make it tougher for him, but he’ll go into the race in great form, very fit and very well. We’ll put a bit of thought into it over the next few days and see what we can come up with.”

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Gold Symphony (Reward For Effort), who ran third in the Luskin Star Stakes (Listed, 1300m) behind Clearly Innocent at Scone on 13 May, will also take his place in the Stradbroke Handicap.

The four-year-old gelding has since won a Randwick 1045 metre barrier trial on 2 June to tune up for the Group One race.

“He’s turned his form around since being gelded and is Mr Consistent now,” Paul Snowden said.

“He was way down the order for the Stradbroke but we took the punt and he’s now in the field. The barrier (11) is ideal as he’ll come in a few spots and he should be in the first half of the field.”

In other Stradbroke Handicap news, Eagle Farm trainer Rob Heathcote will be instructing jockey Ronnie Stewart to employ standover tactics on Hopfgarten (Mossman) in a bid to reinvigorate the six-year-old.

Hopfgarten was runner-up in the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) first up at Eagle Farm on 29 April before running ninth, beaten 13 lengths, in the Kingsford-Smith Cup last start.

"I was expecting a much better run and at one stage I thought he might have hurt himself. He seemed to drop the bit at the 600 metres and wasn't trying," Heathcote said.

"He is an older horse now and has a few tricks. I will be telling the jockey to stand over him and ride him more aggressively."

Hopfgarten was inspected by Racing Queensland stewards yesterday and passed fit to race after some concerns over a hind leg. Heathcote said the six-year-old sometimes appeared stiff when he first came out of his box but was fine once he warmed up.

Heathcote believes Hopfgarten is far better suited under handicap conditions than at the weight-for-age of his past two starts when second in the Victory Stakes before the Kingsford Smith Cup.

"He drops sharply in weight and it will be the lightest he has had to carry in years with 53.5 kilograms," Heathcote said

"It isn't the strongest Stradbroke and he will meet the Kingsford Smith Cup winner far better at the weights," Heathcote said.

"Then again he would need to improve a good bit to beat Clearly Innocent. I am realistic and the market has us about $31 and that is the right price on his last run."

"I am just hoping we can turn it around and we will see what Hopfgarten can really do."

Hopfgarten is part-owned by Heathcote's wife Vicki and former rugby league star Bruce Harry who were also in the ownership of multiple Group One winner Buffering (Mossman).

"Hofgarten only cost $26,000 and he has won more than $700,000 so he owes us nothing," Heathcote said. "It will be a good party if he can run well."

Magic Millions National Sale Sets RecordThe Magic Millions Gold Coast National Sale concluded yesterday with Book Two of the yearling sale and the racehorses sale taking place, leading to record turnover of $144,344,750 for 1,636 lots sold. The overall average price for every lot sold across the National Weanling, Broodmare, Yearling and Racehorse Sales was $88,230, which was up almost 15 per cent on last year when fewer lots were offered. At yesterday’s National Racehorse Sale, the highest-priced horse was an unraced three-year-old Stratum (Redoute’s Choice) filly, catalogued as Lot 2463, who was sold to Newcastle trainer Paul Perry for $100,000. Click here to view the sale results. Cox Thrilled With Sale ResultsMagic Millions managing director Vin Cox was understandably delighted with the success of the National Sale, with the overall gross across the 15-day sale representing a 35 per cent increase on the 2016 edition. "We started selling 15 days ago and in that time we've seen many people come and go. Everyone has played a significant part in what has been an outstanding couple of weeks on the Gold Coast,” Cox said. “It was great to see such strong competition on the racehorses today. It proves that live auction is the most effective way to market racehorses. The National Sale has closed out with a gross of over $144,000,000, which all but equalled the gross from our record breaking January Yearling Sale of $146,000,000 and far surpassing the $107,000,000 of the 2016 National Sale.” Entries Open For Inglis Online AuctionEntries are being taken for the June Inglis Digital auction. On the back of the success of the May

Sale, entries are being taken until 21 June, with the auction to start at 3pm on 23 June. The cost of entry is $199. “The May auction generated almost 300 entries, which exceeded all our expectations, and we’re looking forward to selling more quality stock for our clients this month,” Inglis Digital’s Nick Melmeth said. All bidders must request bidding approval prior to each sale, irrespective if they were granted approval to bid in the previous month’s auction. Third Derby For RuthvenTrainer Ciaron Maher is pleased with Ruthven (Domesday) ahead of the colt’s third Derby run in five starts. Ruthven, who finished fourth in the ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in April before running second in the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) on 13 May, heads the betting at $5.50 with CrownBet for tomorrow’s Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2200m), and Maher is confident of another good run. "He is leggy and raw-boned. But he is getting better with each start and we felt he deserved another chance at a Derby," Maher said. "Being a big horse and the way he races it would probably have been better for the Derby to have been over 2400 metres at Eagle Farm. But he is at Doomben and I think he can run a race.” Trip Doubts For Here He ComesCo-trainer Donna Logan is unsure that the reduced 2200 metre trip of the Queensland Derby will suit Here He Comes (Bullbars). The gelding ran fourth on a Heavy 8 track in the Grand Prix Stakes (Gr 3, 2200m) at Eagle Farm at his last start, but Logan admitted she would have preferred a stiffer test. “That track at Eagle Farm last time was so bad – it was worse than anything at home,” Logan, who trains in partnership with Chris Gibbs, said. “He did well to run as well as he did. He’s very well in himself, but my concern is Doomben. He’s a big-striding horse and coming back to 2200 metres is a worry when we’ve been working toward 2400,

but that’s what we’ve got and hopefully he can make the most of it.” Melody Belle On Song

Melody Belle (Commands) is in peak condition ahead of the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), according to co-trainer Jamie Richards. The filly won the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) by almost five lengths at her last start, but Richards said the J J Atkins has been her primary objective this preparation. "She's in really good order. She came through the Sires' run the other day really well," Richards said. "It's grand final day for us. These are the races these horses have been set to win. It's been great to win a couple of black-type races on the way through, but these are the races we're here to win." Qiji Phoenix Unlikely For J J AtkinsFellow New Zealand challenger Qiji Phoenix (Not A Single Doubt) is unlikely to tackle the J J Atkins Stakes tomorrow. The Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs-trained colt lost his unbeaten record when seventh from the outside barrier (18) in the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes on 27 May, and Logan said the colt is unlikely to run after he was again drawn on the outside in the $600,000 race. “His barrier of 15 makes it virtually impossible,” Logan said. “From where they start at Doomben it’s just too tough. I don’t want to devalue or hurt him with a gut-buster from that draw when he’s got a really bright three-year-old career ahead of him.”

Single Gaze Right For CupTrainer Nick Olive is confident of a bold showing from Single Gaze (Not A Single Doubt) in the Brisbane Cup (Gr 2, 2200m) at Doomben tomorrow. The Group One-winning mare took out the P J O’Shea Stakes (Gr 2, 2200m) over the same course and distance at her last start, and Canberra-based Olive believes the four-year-old has found some improvement ahead of the $300,000 Brisbane Cup. Single Gaze is currently on the second line of the betting at $5.50 with CrownBet for the Group Two. Confidence High Around Benzini Jockey Kelly McCulloch expects Benzini (Tale Of The Cat) to run well in defence of his Brisbane Cup title. The seven-year-old took out the Group Two under McCulloch’s sister Rosie Myers last season, but, with Myers recovering from a broken leg, McCulloch is looking forward to riding the gelding. "I have actually just been talking to Rosie on the phone about Benzini, because she knows him pretty well," McCulloch said. "We both think his run the other day (when fourth in the Premier's Cup) was pretty strong. Without knowing the form of this race super well, he looks to me like he is in it with a very good chance again.” Brisbane Cup Test For Top Of My ListCo-trainer Edward Cummings expects the step up to 2200 metres in the Brisbane Cup to bring about further improvement from Top Of My List (High Chaparral). The mare has taken out the JRA Plate (Gr 3, 2000m) and the Lord Mayor’s Cup (Listed, 2000m) in Sydney at her last two starts and is rated a $6 chance with CrownBet for the Group Two. "I don't think that'll be too much of a problem for her. She's obviously done pretty well at 2000 in two attempts," Cummings, who trains in partnership with his father Anthony, said. "I think she's suited down to the ground for the trip. She's had the typical kind of break and we couldn't be much happier with her." Import Napoleon To Start At RandwickTrainer Jarrod Austin is pleased with German-bred Napoleon (Samum) ahead of the $100,000

Stayers Cup (3200m) at Randwick tomorrow. The seven-year-old ran second over 2200 metres at Warwick Farm and has made steady progress on the track after picking up an injury in February. “We were pretty gentle on him (after his injury). We took a long time bringing him back. Everything was done properly and the results are coming through now," Austin said. "He's come back as good as ever. It's probably the first preparation we've had with him that he hasn't had a niggle."

Heavy Track At RandwickThe Randwick track is already heavy with rain expected to continue in the lead-up to the June Stakes meeting tomorrow. Randwick racecourse manager Nevesh Ramdhani said the surface had handled the recent deluge well and there was no evidence of surface water on the track during an inspection yesterday. Ramdhani said 106.4 millimetres of rain had fallen on the track in the seven days to 9am on Thursday morning, including 51mm overnight and was rated a Heavy 9. He said more rain was expected up until and including tomorrow. Docker Pav Lines Up At FlemingtonLightly raced three-year-old Docker Pav (Shrewd Rhythm) is set to tackle the $100,000 Henry Bolte Handicap (2000m) at Flemington tomorrow. The gelding, who has won two of his four starts, ran fourth in the Port Adelaide Cup (Listed, 2500m) on 20 May at his last start having been a late withdrawal from the South Australian Derby a week prior after rearing in the stalls. "We could run (in Adelaide) against older horses for half the prize money or go across the border and run against the three-year-olds for double the money," Smart said. "He's quite a natural athletic sort of stayer and I didn't mess around too much with him over the shorter trips as I wanted to get him up to an ideal trip as quick as I could, and coming back to the 2000 metres is no worries.” Hall Of Fame And Splurge Returning To New ZealandTe Akau-raced pair Hall Of Fame (Savabeel) and Splurge (Savabeel) are to return to New Zealand from Brisbane. Group One winner Hall Of Fame ran fifth in the Queensland Day Stakes (Listed,

1350m) at his only start during the Queensland Winter Carnival, while Splurge has finished down the field in the BRC Sprint (Gr 3, 1350m) and Moreton Cup (Gr 2, 1200m). "Splurge didn't run badly. He's just landed a couple of ordinary barriers over here, but he's a high-class horse and now he's gelded he's started to relax a bit more and might be wanting to get out to 1400 metres or a mile," co-trainer Jamie Richards said. Eight Internationals Invited For Cox PlateEight overseas horses have been invited to compete in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) including Japanese horse Neorealism (Neo Universe) and reigning Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther (Tavistock). Multiple Group One-winning globetrotter Highland Reel (Galileo), third to Winx (Street Cry) in the Cox Plate in 2015, and last year's Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) runner up Scottish (Teofilo) are also among the Moonee Valley Racing Club's invitees. 2016 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Makahiki (Deep Impact) has also been invited to take on Winx as she aims for her third Cox Plate win on 28 October. Lasqueti Spirit Back In WorkGroup One-winning filly Lasqueti Spirit (Beneteau) is back in work ahead of a spring campaign. The three-year-old caused a $101 upset when taking out the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington on 3 November and has since placed twice at Group One level, when second and third in the Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) respectively. She finished down the field in the Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at her last start and returned to trainer Lee Curtis’ stable on Wednesday. Rosehill Barrier Trials PostponedToday’s Rosehill barrier trials have been postponed to Tuesday after heavy rain in the past two days made the track unsuitable to conduct the heats. There are 14 heats programmed on Tuesday, starting at 8.30am with heat one. Click here to view the Rosehill barrier trial acceptances.

Wyong AbandonedYesterday’s race meeting at Wyong was abandoned after one race due to the ongoing heavy rain. Race one was conducted on a Heavy 10 surface and in heavy rain, forcing Racing NSW stewards to call off the remaining seven races due to the inclement weather with the surface deemed unfit for racing. Meetings Moved From SeymourThree meetings scheduled to take place at Seymour Racing Club have been transferred to allow the new track additional time to bed in. Seymour has hosted seven race meetings since the course was renovated, but the upcoming meetings on 22 June and 27 July have been switched to Wangaratta and Echuca respectively, while Wangaratta will also host Seymour's 19 September fixture. "We are taking a conservative approach by managing the use of the track, so that it is in the best shape to be able to conduct racing at key spring meetings leading into the Seymour Cup in October," Racing Victoria's racing operations manager Paul Bloodworth told Racing.com. Thompson Fined Over Astronomos TestTrainer John Thompson has been fined $6,000 by Racing NSW for presenting a horse to race with a prohibited substance in its system. An inquiry was held by the governing body after Astronomos (New Approach) was found to have triamcinolone acetonide, which has anti-inflammatory properties and is a corticosteroid, present in his system following a post-race test after the JRA Plate at Randwick on 15 April. Astronomos was disqualified from his fourth place finish in the $150,000 race.

Smith Fails To Attend InquiryBrisbane trainer Brad Smith has again failed to attend a Racing Queensland (RQ) inquiry on medical grounds. The trainer, who has applied for a stay of proceedings, is currently suspended after failing to attend hearings last month pending an investigation by RQ into charges relating to ‘dishonest, corrupt, fraudulent, improper or dishonourable action or practice in connection with racing’. "Smith has applied for a stay which will be heard in the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal on Friday afternoon," Queensland Racing integrity commissioner Ross Barnett said. Tabcorp-Tatts Merger Decision DelayedThe proposed merger between Tabcorp Holdings Ltd and Tatts Group Ltd has been delayed. Tabcorp revealed yesterday that the Australian Competition Tribunal has formally extended the date in which it will it will make its determination on the proposed merger from 13 June to 10 September. The Tribunal has said that the additional time will allow for further consultation with both Tabcorp and Tatts Group. New Chief For Albury Racing ClubMichael Wighton has been appointed as the new chief executive officer of the Albury Racing Club. Wighton replaces John Miller, who has accepted a new position as the chief executive officer of the Sunshine Coast Turf Club in Queensland. Wighton is expected to commence his new role on 17 July having previously served as the general manager of Corowa Racing Club.

Lord Snow Set To ReturnLightly raced four-year-old Lord Snow (Postponed) is set to resume over 1400 metres at Avondale today after a layoff. The Moira and Kieran Murdoch-trained gelding broke his maiden at the second attempt when dead-heating at Te Rapa on 13 August last year, but he has been off the track since finishing a head second at Pukekohe later that month. "He's ready to go again and he's been taken along quietly – he's a very big horse so he's needed some time," Moira Murdoch said. "He's got a bit of weight (60 kilos) so it remains to be seen how he copes with that. He will be better once he gets to a mile, but he is forward enough to run a cheeky race." Te Aroha To Resume RacingTe Aroha racecourse has been given the go ahead to resume racing after the abandonment of its autumn race meetings. The 17 March fixture was abandoned after two races with jockeys raising concerns over the inconsistency of the Dead 5 surface, but the track has since undergone remedial work and has been inspected on several occasions by Racing Integrity Unit (RIU) stewards. “After a 12 week break the track looks in very good order with a good sole of grass and it performed up to standard when a number of horses galloped on it,” RIU steward Matthew Williamson told www.theinformant.co.nz. “They galloped at various points across the track out to 15 metres and it performed consistently with no apparent issues.”

Schofield Discharged From HospitalJockey Chad Schofield was discharged from hospital in Hong Kong yesterday following a race fall at Happy Valley on Wednesday evening. Schofield was riding the Ricky Yiu-trained Molly's Jade Star (Magic Albert) in race eight when the horse broke down in the closing stages, throwing him from the saddle. Schofield, who is currently ninth in the Hong Kong jockeys’ premiership with 27 winners, did not suffer any fractures as a result of the fall but was believed to be suffering from neck soreness. Boss On Auspicious DayGlen Boss has been booked to ride promising two-year-old Auspicious Day (Showcasing) in the Inglis Ready2Race Stakes (1200m) at Kranji on Sunday. The juvenile ran second in the Singapore Silver Horseshoe (1000m) under Alan Munro at his last start, but Munro

has opted to partner Lucky Master (Barbados) in the S$90,000 race. “After Munro decided to stick with Alwin Tan’s horse, I was more than happy to get Bossy on Auspicious Day,” trainer Leslie Khoo said. “The horse has had three runs and they were not bad at all, especially the last two. I think the 1200 metres on grass will suit him better.”

Queen Anne Aim For American PatriotGrade One winner American Patriot (War Front) will travel to England next week ahead of a tilt at the Queen Anne Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot. The Todd Pletcher-trained and WinStar Farm-raced four-year-old won the Maker's 46 Mile Stakes (Gr 1, 8f) at Keeneland at his last start and will leave America on 13 June, one week before the Queen Anne on the opening day of Royal Ascot. “American Patriot breezed exceptionally well on Saturday, and came out of the work good. all systems go,” Pletcher said. “It’s an honor to have a horse good enough to compete in one of the biggest races in the world like the Queen Anne, and on a stage like Royal Ascot.” Irish War Cry Ready For BelmontTrainer Graham Motion has been pleased with Irish War Cry’s (Curlin) preparation ahead of the Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 12f) on Saturday. The dual Grade Two-winning colt finished tenth in the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) at his last start, but Motion is hopeful of an improved performance in the US$1,500,000 Grade One. "He's had a good couple of weeks and I can honestly say this was not my original plan," Motion told Bloodhorse.com. "When he ran so disappointingly in the Derby, I wanted to go home and just forget about the rest of the Triple Crown. But he had a really good couple of weeks, he breezed well last weekend, and I felt he needed to be here, especially after the (surprising) results of the Preakness."

Egg Tart (Sebring) continued her rapid progression at Doomben on Saturday, demonstrating a great turn of foot in taking out Saturday’s

Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2200m) – her second Group One victory from only eight race starts.

The Chris Waller-trained filly commenced this preparation with a first up win in a Class One, Fillies and Mares Handicap (1300m) at Newcastle’s Beaumont track on 11 March.

She followed that with victories at Warwick Farm, Flemington and Morphettville, where she firstly showed her rare brand of acceleration over a staying trip with a brilliant late-closing win in the Schweppes Oaks (registered as Australasian Oaks) (Gr 1, 2010m).

Then again on Saturday, racing over 2200 metres, Egg Tart produced an impressive sprint that saw her come from back in 11th place in the short 341 metre Doomben straight to score clearly by a length and a quarter.

“Egg Tart is a fantastic filly,” said her rider Kerrin McEvoy.

“She had a turn of foot to get me out of trouble after we got caught behind some slow ones.”

And that was confirmed by Daily Sectionals’ timing which revealed that Egg Tart recorded the fastest last 200 metres (11.32) and fastest last 100 metres (5.70) of any of the winners on the eight race Doomben card.

Her other closing sectional times were also impressive with her last 1000 metres in 58.60, last 800 metres in 34.28 with her final 400 metres in a quick 22.72.

In one of the other features at Doomben the Nick Olive-trained mare Single Gaze (Not A Single Doubt) also demonstrated a quick final sprint in taking out the P J O’Shea Stakes (Gr 2, 2200m).

Run over the same 2200 metre distance as the Queensland Oaks, there was however a noticeable difference in the merit of the closing times as the P J O’Shea Stakes was run at a very moderate early pace with the final time of

that race being 2:19.21, which was 3.2 seconds slower than Egg Tart’s 2:16.01.

And, having observed over many years in analysing times, a slow early pace makes the task of sprinting quickly over the final stages far more likely – the stronger the overall pace adds significantly to the merit of the closing times.

Single Gaze raced outside the leader Preferment (Zabeel) and they covered the first 1600 metres in a pedestrian 1:45.30 (13.16 200m rate) before the latter sprinted home in a quick 34.00 (last 600m).

While the first 1600 metres in the Queensland Oaks was 1:41.02 (12.62 200m rate), some 4.28 seconds faster, yet Egg Tart sprinted her last 600 metres in 34.28 – only 0.28 seconds slower and her other closing times (400m, 200m and 100m) were faster.

Egg Tart is now to be spelled and aimed at the spring carnival with bright prospects in even stronger grades.

In the other Group feature at Doomben,

the consistent Gerald Ryan-trained sprinter Deploy (Fastnet Rock) impressed on the watch in taking out the Moreton Cup (Gr 2, 1200m).

Progressing quickly through the grades, Deploy has advanced from winning a Benchmark 82 (1400m) at Randwick on 4 February, at the end of his last preparation, to winning that Doomben Group Two race at his second run this term.

After a quick beginning from his wide barrier (10), Deploy raced outside the leader, took a narrow lead halfway down the straight and then lifted in the closing stages when challenged by the top weight Dothraki (Mossman) to win by a long neck.

Time for the 1200 metre journey was 1:09.19, which was clearly the fastest of the three races on the Doomben program over that distance.

In addition, Deploy returned the fastest last 1000 metres (55.80) and last 600 metres (33.52) of any of the winners of the eight races on the day.

Egg Tart Demonstrates Great Turn Of Foot In Second Group One Victory

While Deploy is a progressive four-year-old sprinter on the rise, acknowledgement is due to the runner up Dothraki as that six-year-old, who was having his 37th start, showed he can still be most effective as he conceded the winner six kilograms yet only failed narrowly in the fast run race.

Another progressive sprinter to produce fast closing times at Doomben was the Bjorn Baker-trained four-year-old mare Bonny O’Reilly (O’Reilly) in winning the Helen Coughlan Stakes (Listed, 1200m).

Now the winner of seven of her nine starts, Bonny O’Reilly enjoyed a nice trip from her good barrier (2) behind the leader before taking an inside run on straightening. She then went on to score comfortably by a length and a quarter in an overall time of 1:10.23.

The tempo was reasonable in the early part of the race with the first 600 metres clocking 36.26 and Bonny O’Reilly then returned fast closing times with her last 600 metres in 33.90,

last 400 metres in 22.36) with her final 200 metres in 11.36.

At the Rosehill meeting on Saturday, the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Silence (Foxwedge) returned quick closing times in winning the Two-Year-Old Handicap (1200m).

Having only his fourth race start, Silence ran on from fifth at the 800 metres to win narrowly but it was his sectional times that took the eye with his last 600 metres in 33.38, last 400 metres in 22.23 with his final 200 metres in 11.29.

The fourth-placed Gerald Ryan-trained filly Pendeloque (Snitzel) also impressed On The Watch as she was pressured in the lead, clocking a fast mid-race section of 44.70 (1000m to the 200m), and she did very well in then holding on for fourth, beaten only a length and a quarter.

But last word goes to the Chris Waller-trained sprinter New Universe (Darci Brahma) who suffered his first defeat in three Australian starts since coming from New Zealand when

(2.8 lengths) eighth in the Benchmark 78, 3YO (1200m) at Rosehill.

New Universe has featured twice recently in this column after producing very impressive closing sectional times in winning previously at Rosehill on 6 and 20 May.

A firm favourite on Saturday, supporters may have been disappointed in New Universe but circumstances were strongly against him winning again.

Going up quickly in the weights, New Universe carried 59.5 kilograms top weight and his task was then made even more difficult when he over-raced in the early stages behind a slow early pace (first 600m in 36.83).

New Universe then gradually made ground in the sprint home, his fast closing times confirming that this three-year-old is still a rising talent with his last 600 metres in 33.03 and last 400 metres in 21.90.Doomben Sectional Times provided by www.dailysectionals.com.au

The Peter Gelagotis-trained two-year-old colt Levendi ran out an impressive two and three quarter length winner on his racecourse debut

over 1200 metres on a Soft 5 track at Ballarat on Sunday.

He was smartly away from barrier four in the 11-horse field under Ben Melham, settling nicely on the shoulder of the leader before quickening into the lead at the 300 metres and stretching clear for a decisive victory over the New Zealand-bred Sully (Reliable Man).

Levendi was purchased for $140,000 by Manny Gelagotis at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Widden Stud and is one of four winners for leading first season sire Pierro (Lonhro).

The colt is one of two named foals out of the stakes-placed mare Lipari (Redoute’s Choice), making him a half-brother to one winner, while his second dam is the 2002 Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Tully Thunder (Thunder Gulch).

His third dam is the Group Two winner Fleur De Chine (Centaine), while this is also the same family as Group Two winner Thunder Lady (Mastercraftsman), Group Three winner Irish Flame (Zed), stakes-winning and Group One-placed Zamzam (Redoute’s Choice), and Listed winner Sufficient (Zabeel).

Lipari was covered by More Than Ready (Southern Halo) last November having foaled a filly by Sebring (More Than Ready). She also has a Sepoy (Elusive Quality) colt who sold for $58,000 to Pacific Bloodstock from the draft of Widden Stud at the Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale earlier this year.

Stablemate Miss Toorak Flyer was slow to move, settled in second last place in the seven-horse field before making a quick move nearing the home turn.
