The WHA 2012 Winter Camp Santa Monica, CA 2/17 – 19, 2012 By Danielle Macri I always find the WHA camps amazing, and this winter camp was no different. I had an opportunity to work with wonderful instructors on not only core techniques, but also extensions of these techniques. On the first night we broke up into groups and had a chance to work on some weapons training. As a 1st geup, I really enjoy the preview of what is to come. The next day we started with a seminar taught by Master Phillips. He was instructing us on counters to the counters. It was fascinating to be shown what you can do to someone who counters you and how you can off balance them and gain back control. We all had a chance to practice what we were being shown and had an opportunity to ask questions. I actually felt like I had a better understanding of the core techniques as it was put under a microscope and dissected. The camp continued with Master Hendrix working with us on finger locks. This was another fantastic seminar. Master Hendrix showed us things that I never would have thought of on my own, and is not taught in the core techniques. You better believe we brought this information back to New York and showed this to the students at Han Ho! The camp continued with a session on punch defense taught by Mr. Consentino. During this session more extensions to the core techniques were taught. This was an opportunity to look at

our techniques in a slightly different way, using different angles than I have practiced in the past. Again we had a chance to practice each thing shown with Mr. Consentino available to answer questions. The day continued with Grand Master Jung leading a session on sparring. We had an opportunity to spar with different people of different ranks. This was a lot of fun and we all had a chance to see how our techniques held up. Just when I thought, “what an incredible camp - what else could possibly be taught?” Master Jason Jung began instructing us. I could not believe my eyes as I watched him show techniques! He spoke for a while on how we should train at our school to make it more realistic. We had a chance to attack and be attacked by several people fast and hard. Master Jason Jung watched and gave instructions which helped us each improve what we know. As a 1st geup who’s getting ready for my black belt test, I found the camp and all of the advice and instruction to be extremely helpful. I highly recommend these camps for all WHA students, no matter your rank. After all, where else would you have such a wealth of WHA knowledge at one place and one time than at a WHA Camp? Hope to see you all at Summer Camp!
