One of Our Own

Although there were no sugar plums, the kitchen of Muriel Stollery was filled with the sights and smells of home cooking. Short grain rice, granulated sugar, sultana raisins and cinnamon sat on the counter top, just some of the ingredients that go into her “famous” rice pudding.

Without giving any of her cooking secrets away Muriel agreed to be interviewed for this newsletter even thought she admitted she thought there were other cooks who should be profiled instead.

“I feel guilty being interviewed when there are so many good cooks at the club,” she said.

But Muriel agreed to let this writer into her home and kitchen to see just where she prepares her favourite meals, some of which end up at the club gatherings.

We talked about her favourites and they include the traditional

rice pudding, which was boiling on the stovetop that day, and her delicious coconut cream pie.

“I cook rice pudding in the oven if I do my mother’s recipe,” said Muriel as she stirred the pot.

Aha I thought – maybe I was going to find out her secret recipe, but alas no such luck.

“My mother did it by guess and by gosh, she used eggs and brown sugar,” was all that she would say.

But Muriel did admit that her all-time favourite is macaroni and cheese. “I’m not big on dessert but I like macaroni and cheese and baked beans too,” she said confirming her trust in good old-fashioned home cooked meals.

What is Muriel’s secret to her great tasting meals?

“I say anything that takes longer than 10 minutes I’ve lost interest,” she said laughing.

MURIEL STOLLERY – Local senior shares her love of traditional favourites like macaroni and cheese

“The children were nestled all snug in their beds,While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads”

7

The fact that Muriel was willing to share some of her “favourites” makes this story even better.

And sharing is something that she and others at the seniors' club do on a regular basis, from the soup and sandwich lunch

that is held the first Wednesday of every month to the potluck.

Muriel joined the seniors’ club about three years ago and hasn’t looked back.

“When I retired I wanted to do something with my time so I joined the seniors’ club. You get to meet a lot of nice people . . . and the card parties are a blast,” she said with a big grin.

At the young age of 88 it looks like Muriel has no plans to slow down.

“Others at the club can make such great soups,” she murmured.

Somehow I think there may be a home-cooked soup in Muriels’ future.

CHRISTMAS DINNER – Seniors celebrate Christmas in style at club’s annual holiday dinner

Celebrating the festive season the Campbel l ford Senior Citizens’ Club did it in style with their annual Christmas dinner with all the trimmings!

Catered by Betty Wickman, from the turkey and full flavoured dressing and gravy to the exquisite salads and superb selection of desserts, it was a meal to remember.

Close to 75 attended the festivities which saw the clubhouse filled with all the signs that Christmas was near.

For seniors like Margaret Hull who relies on friends to get out and about, the dinner was a chance to visit and celebrate.

“This is my first Christmas dinner this year,” she said, enjoying the company of others.

She enjoys the friendships she has made over the many years she has been a member.

Then there’s Carol and Angelo Culos who drove all the way from Marmora, a trip they make often so they can enjoy the activities at the club, most especially shuffleboard.

“We’re fairly new to the seniors club. The folks are really friendly,” said Carol.

The couple enjoys playing friendly games of shuffleboard with a group of about 12 regulars.

For them the Christmas meal was not their first of the season but one they were looking forward to.

“We’ve had some wonderful church Christmas dinners too,” said Carol as they waited for the dinner to be served.

Helen Stephens, first vice president with the club was there with her sister Jackie Revoy, who was visiting from Calgary.

Actually Jackie grew up in Campbellford and has been coming back regularly to visit her sister, moreso now that they are both widows.

The only two siblings left out of a family of nine, the sisters really appreciate getting together.

“We’re just enjoying each other’s company,” said Jackie.

“Christmas is a family thing for me,” agreed Helen, who is also on the booking committee for the seniors centre.

“We are booked fully this season. In fact we were lucky

9

to get this night for ourselves for our Christmas dinner,” she said laughing, noting that the centre is wheelchair accessible which makes it a popular venue.

Many of the local clubs and organizations hold their Christmas dinners and parties at the centre.

The highlight of the evening was the singing of Christmas carols and seasonal music by the Campbellford Citizens Choir led by director Ross Cotton.

From the music of Jay Althouse who composed, “Have

you heard the story of the baby boy, born in Bethlehem?” to “In the Bleak Midwinter” written by English composer Harold Darke to “Do You Hear What I Hear?” a Christmas song written in October 1962 with lyrics by Noël Regney and music by Gloria Shayne, it was an evening to remember.

Everyone showed their appreciation with plenty of applause.

“Anybody that wants to come out and join the choir which meets Mondays at

7 p.m. is welcome,” said club President Gerald Brunton.

MONTHLY POTLUCK– a communal meal to which people bring food to share

That is the Merriam-Webster definition and it seems to aptly describe just what happens once a month at the Campbellford Senior Citizens’ Club.

Some scholars believe that the first use of the term potluck appears in the works of an Elizabethan poet named Thomas Nashe in the 16th century.

Wherever it came from the word is synonymous with people getting together to enjoy

different delectable dishes at a social gathering. The club here is no different.

“It’s a time to come out for fellowship. The food is good and you get to meet other people and mix and mingle,” said club member Joan Cocchio.

She was busy in the kitchen with others as they arrived with everything from hot casseroles to stews in slow cookers, to salads and desserts.

Tables lined up end to end are filled with tasty dishes which are brought to the monthly potluck by members of the Campbellford Senior Citizens’ Club. It’s a great chance to enjoy food and friends. Photo: Sue Dickens

11

Ann Battman was there too.“We don’t decide who brings

what . . . it is well . . . just potluck,” she said as she helped organize the dishes. “Never soup, usually casseroles and buns and desserts,” she added.

Gordon Walsh who has been a member of the club for about two years, said he liked to come to the potluck because “it’s about socializing with people and coming out and having a good time.”

Outnumbered by the women, he added with a grin, “I like to help out the ladies in the kitchen.

“I enjoy the potluck because you get a variety of foods to enjoy. And there’s lots of laughter. But being with the people here at the club is the big thing,” he said.

Just then the club’s President Gerald Brunton stopped into the kitchen carrying a pie. When I asked, “Did you make that pie?” he replied convincingly, “I did!”

Suddenly I realized I probably should have brought something to share. Because that’s what everyone here does.

Then suddenly it was time. The tables were lined up end to end and dishes of food filled every spot available as everyonge lined up to enjoy the feast.

There were 24 people expected this time.

And again the event didn’t disappoint as folks filled their plates and enjoyed some great conversation with their friends seated next to them.

Invited to join I couldn’t help but think how everyone else’s cooking tasted so much better than mine.

Potluck starts at 11:15 on the third Wednesday of every month.

A meeting is usually held after and anyone that wants to can stay and play cards.

The club tries to have a guest speaker and this time it was Brian Casteels, a Trent Hills naturopath who opened an office recently in downtown Campbellford.

Good food and information about how to stay healthy too.

Couldn’t get much better than this!

The Campbellford/Seymour Community Foundation has helped support the arts, the environment, youth, sports and schools, and citizens in need. From Crowe Bridge Conservation Area to Fare Share Campbellford and District Food Bank, we have awarded grants to develop the local arts, music and sports scenes, to create green space and accessibility, and to ensure that no one in our region is left behind or goes without. We have probably touched the lives of everyone in this com-munity in some way or another.

As a community foundation, we pool together the chari-table gifts we receive into a permanent, income earning endowment, which is then held in trust for the benefit of the community. While the capital is not touched, grants are made from the earnings of these funds to seed, nurture and support community initiatives. Almost 2.4 million dollars have been invested in community proj-ects! These grants have and will provide much-needed funding

to ensure a thriving, healthy community for all.

A community foundation is not just about raising money for the community; it is about investing in the community and being committed to raising community spirit and awareness. Your community foundation is always asking the big ques-tions: What does your commu-nity need? How can we make this community stronger, more vibrant, more caring and more prosperous? Now, we are ask-ing another question: Will you help us to sustain continued community development for the wonderful communities in our Municipality?

Please feel free to contact us or stop in for a visit to learn more about your community foundation:
