Before you pack the car for that long awaited summer vacation, make sure you run through Tire World’s checklist to ensure your vehicle is in its best condition.

• Inspect the tires - Summer heat increases the pressure in your vehicle’s tires, so get out your tire-pressure gauge and check that your tires are inflated to the level recommended in your owner’s manual. Make sure to check your spare tire as well. If your tires are underinflated, you run the risk of a blowout and if your tires are overinflated, they will make hydroplaning more likely in wet weather. While you are checking the air pressure, make sure to check the tread depth. You can do this by sticking a penny in the tread gaps with

• Check the essentials - After running the car for a few minutes, check the oil. It should appear clean on the stick and at a sufficient level. Check the owner’s manual recommended mileage for an oil change. Many technicians recommend an oil change every 3,000 miles. A good investment for summer driving is new windshield-wiper blades. The winter’s weather may have reduced the blades’ performance and thunderstorms often creep in without warning.

• Purge your trunk of junk - Clean out your car! The more you carry in your trunk, the more fuel your vehicle will burn. You could reduce mpg by up to 2% if an extra 100 pounds is stored in your trunk.

• Prepare for emergencies - It is important to keep an emergency kit with some necessities in your car in case your get stranded. Suggested items are jumper cables, an air compressor, tools, and a first aid kit.

• Slow it down - Please keep in mind as you jump in your vehicle for your long awaited vacation that driving faster than 60 miles per hour decreases your fuel efficiency. Each 5 mph that you drive over 60 mph is equivalent to paying an extra 24 cents per gallon for gas. That extra money is better spent on a refreshing cool drink at the beach!

• Keeping it cool – A properly operating A/C system in the extreme heat means more than a pleasant convenience for the driver. If the car’s air conditioning is not maintaining its optimum temperature, it may mean the refrigerant level is low or there is another problem.
