Dear Parents and Carers,
Updated information about COVID-19 (formerly referred to Novel Coronavirus)
The NSW Department of Education is working closely with the NSW Ministry of Health
in response to the unfolding international COVID-19 (formerly referred to as Novel
Coronavirus) situation.
Updated advice from the NSW Government for parents and staff is:
Any student or staff member who has been in, or transited through, mainland
China, Republic of Korea (South Korea) or has been in Iran is excluded from
work, school or child care services for 14 days from the date they left mainland
China, Korea or Iran.
Any confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded until they are medically
cleared to return.
Close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded for 14 days
since last contact with the confirmed case.
Students and staff who have returned to Australia and have shown no symptoms
during the 14-day self-isolation period are able to return to child care services,
school or work.
Consistent with current guidelines, students who are unwell with respiratory illness
should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In line with the medical advice there is
no reason why those who have not travelled should not be at school.
Maintaining good hygiene standards is an important way to reduce the risk of acquiring
and spreading respiratory infections. Please encourage your child to practise good
hygiene, including handwashing with soap as handwashing is the single most effective
way to reduce the spread of germs that cause respiratory disease.
All classrooms will be displaying handwashing advice for students and staff.
The NSW Department of Education will continue monitoring the COVID-19 situation
and provide parents and caregivers with updated information about the virus.

Reading at Home
We have recently purchased some books that are suitable to read to toddlers and
preschool children at home whether it be at bed time or during the day. If you have
preschool children and would like a book or two please see Mrs Carruthers or myself.
Homework
Recently we surveyed parents and carers in relation to homework. Thank you to
those parents who returned the surveys. Nearly everyone indicated that they value
homework. Quality homework can help students to develop effective study habits
and broaden their understandings and skills across the curriculum. It allows for
practising, extending and consolidating work done in class. Homework provides
training for students in planning and organising time and develops a range of skills
in identifying and using information resources. Additionally, it establishes habits of
study, concentration and self-discipline.
Homework for Kindergarten-Year 2
In general, students are not expected to complete formal homework in
Kindergarten. Students may be given books to read at home, as appropriate.
In Years 1 and 2 some formal homework will be set. For example, students
might be asked to read and write, learn words for spelling and complete some
mathematical activities.
Homework for Years 3-6
Homework in Years 3-6 may be varied and students may be expected to work
more independently. Students could be encouraged to read and practise
mathematical concepts learnt at school. Other homework may also be set
across areas of the curriculum.
Regards
Matthew Ralph
A huge congratulations to our 14 Library Leaders for 2020! This year we have a diverse group of leaders,
who are eager to learn the role of an Information Specialist in the library environment. Our Sadleir
Public School Library Leaders for 2020 are: Owen (3/6 Yellow), Israa, Dalia and Mohamed.C (5Teal),
Nathalie, Maddison and Samantha (5/6 Cyan), Sereen, Va’elata, Solinuu and Zara.H (5/6 Purple), Jai,
Isabella and Salatiel (6Magenta).
On Tuesday 25th February, our school Library Leaders with Miss Malone, Miss Walmsley and Mrs
Khoury were invited to go on an excursion to the State Library of New South Wales. The group were
given a private tour of the library by a Children’s Librarian of the State Library. We went down ‘behind
the scenes’ where the public cannot enter, to visit the stack. Here they preserve maps, journals and
registries, some dating back to the 1700s. Many life stories of various people were told by the Librarian,
when viewing their personal artefacts in the library’s collection. These included stories from the gold
rush, convicts and previous bookshops, all carrying a story of their history in Australia. In the Children’s
Library, students were shown the two smallest books, both including writing inside that need a
magnifying class to read (see the photos Zara and Salatiel holding them on the next page). Once the
tour was finished, students walked over to the Botanical Gardens for lunch.
Many thanks to Miss Walmsley and Mrs Khoury for assisting Miss Malone with our wonderful library
leaders on their excursion.

Last week was our first opportunity to be
leaders in our Vertical groups. This great
experience helps us develop our self
esteem and encourages us to come out of
our comfort zone. Peer leadership
encourages us to speak up and lead our
peers.
Our first lesson was focused on how to be safe on the new school playground
equipment. Every member of the group joined the conversations about the
importance of our PBL Values and safety around our school. Here are some quotes
from our fellow peers that were involved in Fridays lessons.
“Peer leadership is good for kids so they know the rules around our school. It helps
us practise what our community values are for example: using equipment properly
and sun safety,” -Lupepe
“It is fun and it helps me to learn and show a good way of collaboration.”–Zahra
“It is really fun and has encouraged me to use the PBL values more often.”–
Brayden
“Peer leadership is a great experience for stage three. We can teach kids to learn
respect in all areas and to cope with different transitions and teachers.” – Harley
“We can teach our younger peers everything we learn and hopefully they can use
those skills in their daily lives.” - Suraiya
Overall, it has been a very positive experience for all Stage 3 students.

Throughout Term One, 6 Magenta are exploring the ‘Material World’
in Science and Technology. Students have been exploring how states
of materials can be changed and manipulated, as well as, what
happens when we combine materials.
In the first half of the term we have been rediscovering states of
matter including solids, liquids and gases. We have taken our learning
outside to conduct a few tests and experiments using balloons. The
students had to hypothesise, create, test and analyse their findings
within groups and as a class. There were three types of matter inside
our balloons, liquid, gas (air) and ice.
A balloon filled with water and a basketball hoop, what
happened next? Come see Mr Gerrard and if you answer
correctly you will receive some form of matter.

During first term, Stage 1 have been
looking at the ‘Material World’ in Science
and Technology. Our focus was to
introduce to students to a variety of
materials and how properties can be
changed, manipulated and combined.
1 Orange were excited with the
experiments they conducted. They bent,
twisted, and squashed materials
including playdough, paper, paddle-pop
sticks, feathers investigating whether
they were flexible.
In Week 5, students investigated what happens to materials when they are mixed
with water.
Examples of mixtures included loose leaf tea and bagged tea, sugar, powder coated
lollypops, baby formula, sprinkles and paint. Students observed some materials,
such as sugar and baby formula, would dissolve after some time in the water. Other
materials like paint remained solid, however,
changed consistency over a period of time.
1 Orange love science and are excited for more
experiments to come.

3 Silver students are working on developing a deeper understanding of
engineering processes through STEM lessons, led by Mr Tran alongside Mrs
Tantoco.
This week, to better understand the processes and skills, the students
collaboratively brainstormed ideas and were given specific materials to
design and create a floatation device for an object. During this challenge, the
groups of students critically communicated and designed a creative floatation
device. After the initial float test, students debriefed with each other and
began to discuss possible improvements for the following week.

Playgroup has had some fun climbing on our new equipment, playing with
our new home corner and singing all of our favourite songs.
At Sadleir Public School we have introduced Zumba as a form of aerobic dance for students to access as an alternative means for play
and physical activity.
Stage 1 have the opportunity to enjoy this as a warm up to their stage sport time on Friday mornings. Stage 2 and 3 students have had time
with Mrs Turner during lunch and recess times.
As the response to this has been positive and encouraging we will continue to offer this throughout the rest of the term. Thank you students and parents for your feedback, and we look forward to
sharing stories from Zumba with MRZ-T soon.
I enjoy Zumba because…

Thank you to all of our students and families who attended our
Community Welcome BBQ last Tuesday 25th February.
It was a lovely way to welcome families back for a new year and to
welcome our new families into Sadleir Public School.
Thank you to all of our amazing staff who made our BBQ a success!
