This month’s featured story focuses on the safety and protection of the North-west community through the resources and programs offered by the Pasade-na Police Department. There are many resources and programs that even I learned about during two well-attended recent public events with Chief Phillip Sanchez and many of his command staff. Also in attendance were 60 stu-dents from the Citizens Police Acade-my and many residents of Northwest Pasa--dena.

The Community Outreach Unit under Sergeant Chris Gutierrez was a spe-cial eye-opener. The Unit is charged to promote on-site, direct and open communications with residents. It strives to facilitate effective two-way communications covering department policies, procedures and important issues that affect public safety. The Outreach Unit staff attends and pro-vides input at a number of regular and ad hoc community meetings. The de-partment also provides third-party ob-jectivity during instances of conflict between neighbors. The staff provides suggestions and steps toward media-tion and conflict resoltion. Outreach Officers also manage a variety of on-

going and annual projects.

In addition the Pasadena Police De-partment’s Police Activities League (P.A.L.), directed by Officers Roxanne Haines and Edward Bondarczuk and working in partnership with The in the Pasadena area.

community.

P.A.L. also offers its members a full summer program that includes swimming, beach trips, and exposure to cultural experiences. The department maintains a variety of classes such as art, cooking, soccer, craft making, and Zumba. In addition, they also conduct girls and boys group sessions to talk about gender specific topics. In the summer 25 students are brought together for a Leadership Conference. The Community Outreach and P.A.L. programs along with the depart-ment’s initiatives in mental health training and Community police train-ing are examples of the community engagement plan to provide re-sources and community involvement for the residents of Northwest Pasa-dena that build trust in the Police Department’s ability to serve and protect.

One of the most critical ways that individuals can influence govern-

mental decision-making is through voting. Voting is a formal expres-

sion of preference for a candidate for office or for a proposed resolu-

tion of an issue. Voting generally takes place in the context of a large-

scale national or regional election however, local and small-scale

community elections can be just as critical to individual participa-

tion in government.

One of the newer bakeries in Northwest Pasadena is

Seed Bakery located at 942 E. Washington Blvd, Pasadena (near Lake Avenue).

Owned and operated by Joseph Abrakjian, who runs the business with his wife Pam, is baking whole grain loaves made from natural levin and flour he mills himself in a small back room on a stone mill.

The breads from heritage grains Kamut, Spelt,

Rye, Sonora— farro, einkorn — are chalked on the board in the front of the shop which make the place sound more like a heritage seed bank than a boulangerie, as do the sacks of grain stacked along the side of the dining room.

Student Spotlight Meet Sydney Cattouse

Sydney Cattouse, a resident of Northwest

Pasadena, is a junior in the Engineering and

Environmental Science Academy at John

Muir High School where he maintains a 3.8 -

4.0 GPA.

Sydney runs cross country in the fall and

runs the 800m during track and field season

in the spring. He is a member of Muir’s

school newspaper, The Blazer, and a photog-

rapher for MuirNow.com, the student news

website for Muir.

Sydney was recently chosen for UCLA VIP

Scholars program

Business Spotlight

He's also making traditional baguettes and pastries

with white flour or a combination of white and whole

grain, including both plain and chocolate croissants.

To go with all the bread and pastries, there's a coffee

menu, with coffee from Kickapoo Coffee, a Wiscon-

sin fair trade coffee program, and a small menu of

breakfast and lunch dishes. Grain bowls, French

toast, quiche, sandwiches. And yes, there's avocado

toast.

After looking for years for the right space, Abrakjian is pretty happy to have found a permanent home at 942 East Washington Blvd in our neighborhood.
