President’s Perspective

How rich we are! As a lay-led

congregation, our Sunday Services

Committee (SSC) puts together our

services. And as we finish up the first

quarter of 2019, we can look back on

an impressive array of Sunday

messages that have helped us reflect

on a wide range of topics. Our SSC is

a creative bunch that has invited

speakers from among our own congregation, from the university, the

community, and from further away.

Who knew that you could go to church and learn about toxic

masculinity, non-binary gender identities, or about how many different

flowers make a bouquet? If you’re like me, you really appreciate

getting to know yourself, our community, and our denomination better

through these interesting Sunday messages.

We began the year 2019 with a moving presentation by the

Reverend Deane Oliva titled “Coming Home,” and it was followed soon

after by Reverend Sharon Dittmar’s talk titled “Listen.”

Matt Foraker’s lively and engaging talk on toxic masculinity provided

perspectives on how we shape people through our expectations, how

we might – if we are not careful - buy in to stereotyped ideas of

masculinity that are in fact severely limiting and hurtful not just to men,

but to everyone.

Cheryl Stevens’ talk on diversity and inclusion helped address basic

misconceptions about diversity, and argued for the value of proactive

approaches to inclusion. We all benefit when we value diversity and

when we put those values into action.

A highlight was the March 31 talk by Jamie Dowland on the

“Transgender Day of Visibility.” Jamie helped us gain new

perspectives, learn basic terminology, and gave us ideas on how we

can be even more welcoming than we had imagined. They peeled

back the layers of binary assumptions to help us see through the eyes

of others, so we can more fully live the intention of our first principle, to

value “the inherent worth and dignity of every person.” I think everyone

Page 3: What’s Happening at UUCBG? · Lunch and Garbology 101 1924 Newburg Road, Louisville, KY 40205 ... • Water - Source of Life, Sunday, 14 Apr, 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm ... My friend Jamie

who came to that service – and the sanctuary was nearly full – went

home with practical tips for avoiding hurtful words and actions, and

with strategies for being more open and for connecting with others

more fully.

I was truly moved during the sharing time after Jamie’s talk on

March 31, because as I heard both members and visitors speak from

the heart, I thought: “This is the kind of church home I want us to be:

we listen, we are open-minded, and we show compassion and

understanding.” We are truly living our UU principles as we learn and

listen and love together.

So I end as I began. Thank you to our Sunday Services Committee

for the rich experiences you bring us each Sunday. You are making a

big difference in our congregation and in our community.

Warmly,

Laura McGee, Board President, [email protected]

CARING FOR THE EARTH

Earth Day ~ Earth Week ~ Earth Month

EARTH YEAR

Workshop on Living Waste Free

12:45 to 2:45 on Sunday, 14 April, Channing Sanctuary

Morganne Davenport will offer a workshop on how to live waste-free.

Cost is $5 for supplies.

Gardening Days of April

After church on Sundays, starting about 2 pm, everyone is invited to

help with weeding and planting as we tidy our gardens for spring. Hats,

gloves, and sturdy shoes are recommended. You can bring them with

you or go home and change, get lunch, and then return.

Many Thanks to Our Church Elves!

We don’t have house elves such as those in the Harry Potter world,

but we do have many people who work behind the scenes and

throughout the week to maintain and beautify our buildings and our

grounds. Many thanks to those who sweep the floors, dig the dirt, haull

the rocks, weed the gardens, empty the trash, and clean the windows!

Write to your Congresspeople about Climate Change

Throughout the month of April, collect letters

at your congregation calling for a national policy

action to address the climate crisis. Supplies will

be in the Fellowship Hall at the Round Table.

Your letters will be delivered by hand to the

offices of US Senators on Capitol Hill by the

Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice

Advocacy Corps.

Supporting Each Other

Webinar: Tending to Grief and Honoring Death 6:45 Central Time, Tuesday, May 7, 2019

Rev. Erika Hewitt, UUA Minister of Worship Arts

After a death, grief can be unbearable — but it's not a problem to be

solved or hustled through. Rather, grief is an unpredictable process to

be tended through companionship and witness. In this webinar, Rev.

Erika Hewitt will guide participants through a basic understanding of

pastoral skills needed to respond to a death and loss; and the liturgical

work of creating and leading memorial services. For further information

on Rev. Hewitt, go to: https://www.uua.org/offices/people/erika-hewitt

“Getting to Know UU” Event Garners New Members

We had 13 guests and 4 children attend the “Getting to Know UU”

session in March. Sharon Crawford (Membership Chair) says, “I

believe everyone was able to learn, share, and had a good time. Some

attendees indicated that they would like to join the church the 1st

Sunday in April.”

We’ll be having a New Member Welcome Ceremony during the

Sunday service on April 7th.

Getting to Know…

To be featured in “Getting to Know…”, contact Roxanne Spencer

Rowan Brown

My friend Jamie had invited me to come to

UUBGKY several times over the past year or

so, and eventually I attended the Remembrance

ceremony and autumn festival. At the time I

was vaguely familiar with the Seven Principles

but wasn't sure how I would feel about a

church setting, since I had grown to dislike the

religious atmosphere I grew up in. I was pleasantly surprised by my

experience and attended a few more times afterward. As I got to know

the members and learn more about the Principles, I found more and

more that I liked about both the philosophy behind Unitarian

Universalism and the Unitarian Universalists themselves.

Currently I attend regularly and serve as tech support for Sunday

services, which entails setting up any technology that the speaker for

that day might need such as the sound system, projector, the computer,

etc. I am just now picking up some projects around the grounds of

UUBGKY, such as repairing a damaged drainage system and working

in the gardens.

I would describe myself as a secular humanist who derives a sense of

spirituality from my background in science as a student of physics and

math. My understanding of the world gives me a sense of

connectedness to everything else in the universe, and compels me to act

in accordance with the Principles espoused by Unitarian Universalism.

I highly value the persuit of knowledge as a means to strengthen my

understanding of the universe and my connection to the other parts of

it.

UUBGKY is the only church I've been in so far where I felt

embraced and not condemned for being a part of the queer community.

I think the congregation displayed excellent support during our recent

Transgender Day of Remembrance service, and I find it so refreshing to

find a spiritual community that is not only tolerant but outright

accepting. Thank you to everybody for being part of our welcoming

congregation.

Food, Fun, and Fellowship

UUCBG Dinner and Silent Auction Night By Kathie Downs

On Saturday, May 4th, we will be resurrecting an old custom! We'll

have our "annual" auction again. This is an evening out, with dinner

and wine, and a silent auction. EVERYONE is invited, so bring your

neighbors, friends, and anyone who likes Mexican Food! With Cinco

de Mayo the next day, we will start our celebration early with Mexican

Food and Margaritas! Dress is casual, but festive - so break out your

Hawaiian shirts and bright clothes.

To do your part, please think about what you can contribute for the

silent auction. It can be anything with a value of at least $25. It can be

artwork, jewelry, designer clothes or any high-end item, OR it can be

services or experiences. Hosting dinners for a certain number of

people with special themes has always been popular. We've had

Persian New Year, Raw Food, and Dancing Under the Stars Dinners.

Or maybe you have some theatre tickets that you will not be using.

Let’s see what we come up with this year!

I, personally, will be offering a tour of the Old World Mennonite

produce markets and stores in Allen County—followed by a barbeque

on my deck out in the middle of farm country. (Driving and food

provided). Let's see what you can come up with!

Volunteers: We are still looking for volunteers to help us with this

extravaganza! If you are interested in helping with the many tasks that

will make up this fantastic event, let me know. We will need people in

the kitchen, as well as people to tabulate and collect money for the

auction items, and a few things in between.

Childcare:Also let me know if you will need childcare for the

evening. If there is enough demand for it, we will hire a baby sitter for

the evening.

Put this date on your calendar and bring a non-UU friend! Look for

forms in Church or on our website, if you have something for the silent

auction!

Contact Kathie ([email protected])

if you have questions or want to offer to help.

By Amber Phillips If you've ever wondered about what we are up to in to Book Talk,

April's meeting is a great point to jump in. We will be taking a closer

look at William Butler Yeats's “The Second Coming”and Mary Oliver's

read these in advance (which can be found online or emailed on

request), it is not necessary. We'll bring copies.

Book Talk meets on the third Sunday of every month at 1:00 in the

Emerson Library (aside from the surprise snowfall we had once!), with

a different read each month that is picked in the previous meeting. All

are welcome to drop in to join the discussion and suggest new reads.

In the past, we have read Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale,

Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchett's Good Omens, Ovid's Metamorphoses,

Subtopics include: Moral and legal equality; increasing the pool size;

the diversity bonus; who gets to contribute to the conversation?

The Wisdom of Crowds

April 12, 2019. Lecture 4

The ability of crowds to make accurate predictions depends equally

on the crowd’s ability and the diversity of their predictions. That this is

right is shown by relatively simple mathematical logic. What is the

cause of diver-sity in such situations?

The Diversity Prediction Theorem Times Three

April 19, 2019. Lecture 5

The lecture focuses on a case study involving Netflix and its

attempt to forecast customer behavior based on their past rankings.

The Weighting Is the Hardest Part

April 26, 2019. Lecture 6

How much weight should be given to the individual rankings, since

not all will be equally helpful in predicting behavior

Sunday Services

The Joy of Age-Diversity: Everyone is Important

11:00 am on Sunday 7 April 2019

One of the UU principles focuses on accepting and supporting

people from diverse backgrounds with a variety of beliefs. Age-

discrimination is generally associated with being older, but the young

also deal with being ignored and silenced. This Sunday let’s celebrate

our younger UUs with an interactive service that highlights recent

creative work from Children’s RE.

New Member Ceremony During the Service

Music Sunday

Forrest Halford ~ 11:00 am on Sunday 14 April2019

Come make a joyful noise as we lift up our voices and our hearts

and sing!

Let Us Rise!

Rev. Deane Oliva ~ 11:00 am on Sunday 21 April 2019

Whether you are Christian or Humanist, Buddhist or Atheist, let the magic of the Passion and

Resurrection stories infuse you with a newborn sense of confidence. Rejoice in

our shape-shifting nature and step into your pride

of purpose….even if you haven’t figured it out yet.

All Ages Service - 11:00 am on Sunday 28 April 2019

Wendell Berry wrote: “The Earth is what we all

have in common.” We have only the one planet:

what are ways we can share it with fellow

interdependent creatures?

STEWARDSHIP

Fundraiser

Because I Know These Things Take Time…

Springtime Parking Lot Sale

8:00 am - 11:00 am on Saturday, 29 June

Get ready for our next

Tailgate Sale!!. We will

once again ask $10 per

spot. If you want to

donate all of the proceeds

from your sales, we will

accept that! But if you just

want to spend a sunny

day (Let’s all hope for

sun!) hanging out in our

parking lot with lots of

others, this is your event.

So start cleaning out

those closets, basements and garages, but instead of taking it to St.

Vincent DePaul, Goodwill or the Salvation Army, load it up in you car

and bring it out to us on June 29th.

If you have stuff, but cannot make it, let me know and we try to find

someone to bring it to the sale for you.

We will also have a Bake Sale, so start baking now and freeze your

cookies, cakes, and muffins. We did quite well with the baked goodies

last time!

As always, we will need folks to help set up, direct traffic, and staff

the bake sale booth. We could also use someone to get the word out

to the free media outlets, hang posters around town, and keep us

organized!
